As mentioned he was a gent of European descent who said the bike make was grey! and the helmet white - that is the best he could do!

The odd thing about the cops was that the one cop holding an automatic had rubber gloves on (the surgical type) my immediate thought was it hides GSR (gun shot residue)....

Just a couple of days after asking is anyone had heard about bike jackings on the spruit... I was riding back from work at about 17h30 last night when a chap stopped me on the spruit to say he just had his bike & helmet stolen from him!!! It happened, at where I thought was the safe end of the Spruit - in the open field near the wooden bridge close to 12th Avenue It apparently was not the bush sleepers/blanket walkers - these chaps were well dressed and clearly knew what they were doing. Preferred method of appropriation were knives - and apparently they were not happy with just taking his bike they wanted a fight... needless to say the chap in question did not put up one. I did a u-turn and headed back up to riverside shops where I reported it to a police patrol vehicle - who said they would investigate - with as much urgency as a husband getting ready for a Sunday lunch at the in-laws! But to everyone cycling there - just a heads up, as it does appear that it is not a safe place to ride anymore I will not be there during the week - and especially not by myself...

Apparently there was an incident at Jan Smuts - 2 chaps jumped out of the bushes with poles and attacked the rider and took the bike. The second one was a hold up. Apparently 3 guys stopped a cyclist/s pulled a gun out of a bin (near a rubish site?) and took watches, cell phones etc. This is just 2nd hand news so not sure of the facts.

Has anyone heard of any recent attacks on the Spruit? My mate just told me of two incidents of recent bike-jacking/thefts on the Spruit. I just want to know how safe things are on the Spruit as I often frequent this route by myself thinking it was safe? Hopefully not true !

What spares do you take along and can you get spares?along the route at the water points? Just ride a Specialized bike - Full service for FREE!!! Brilliant!!! - not that you need a good reason to ride a Specialized!!

I am sure we are bound to meet on the trail. Got Sabie, Sani and Epic in the diary this year so need loads of time in the saddle! Going to aim to do between 70km and 80km is anyone keen.

It was right up there with a Freddy Kruger movie! There must be some deep long term damage to a bike doing that kind of stuff. It also looked like off the bike fitness was more important than on the bike fitness!! I saw more people carrying/pushing than riding!!

Agreed - I am sticking with tubes. Have not had a need to change to tubeless. A good quality slime-filled inner tube IMHO is a good as tubeless... But go with whatever floats your boat - you will find each to his own.

I know some would carry everything including the kitchen sink and others can fix all probems with a single cable tie. But doing a race like Sani 2 C and all the possibilities the elemts can throw at us.... What spares would you recommend carrying in your pack? (DS Bike, Disk Brakes) Cheers Roons
