  1. I ended up hard resetting my device in order to have the unit recognised as a fēnix 3 on GC. I've been using mine daily for everything since I got it (pre SA launch from Clever Training). Glass is fine and a couple of scratches on the bezel only. Nothing worth worrying about, but in hind sight, I would have gone with the silver.
  2. Anyone else find that Garmin Connect does not recognise the device (Garmin fēnix 3) when uploading new workouts?
  3. Just got over 40K points, for me and the family. Both me and the mrs. will get the full 30K points each for exercise and then we'll both do the HIV & other screening tests etc. Not too worried about holding onto diamond for the year. WRT the Max HR %'s, I upload to Discovery directly from Garmin and it appears to use the settings for max HR from the Garmin site.
  4. I've been battling with injury for the last little while, been booked off hope this doesn't last
  5. I've been using the f3, I was trying to get my wife to use it tho, but had a feeling she'd say no. As I suspected, I was right. So now I must use it.
  6. I've got the Sapphire (grey colour) and bought a screen protector. What a mission to fit precisely and it looked crap so I took it off. I've got a few scratches on it since April/May but it's not very noticeable. It's a watch and it's gonna get a few bumps. I read on a Garmin forum discussion on this topic once that an adventure watch should really look like it may have been on an adventure or two!
  7. Not going to be used as a fitness watch but rather an alternative to the daily use of the f3. The only 'fitness' item I'm interested in with the Apple is the step counter because on my days off I still manage over 10K+ steps and I'd like this info to be available in GC if I happen to be using the Apple Watch. The f3 will be used for all actual exercise.
  8. Ja, I got to Fourways Mall at around 10h30 and managed to get a 42mm black one. The guy there said there had been a line of around 30 peeps waiting at opening time. My confirmation from discovery took a while due to the rush. istore tends to be jacked with preorders and booking of units, hope you come right.
  9. I've been getting two smoothies a week since this thing started. My wife is also on it and does not like the smoothies and so I've been using her two as well. I have a Kauai and a Vida each within 100m or so of my office I collected my watch this morning and paid the little extra (R900) for a bigger version. I've been using (READ: playing) a lot and the battery has not been too bad. My question is: I've been using the activity tracker in my Garmin fēnix 3 for the daily step count, now this works fine because Garmin Connect send the info to Discovery. I use GC quite a bit to track my progress, can I swap, as the need/want arrises and have my steps populated to GC from the Apple Watch, thus maintaining my history on GC?
  10. If you read the little booklet that came with our race packs, it states that Coke sponsors the cool drink as a means to ensure that competitor's products are not sold or marketed and ASA/CGA events. The only prerequisite is that unused stock is returned. Not sure who arranges the water. I think the issue is that a lot of the local children seem to be running around with water sachets along the route. It also appears as if a lot of of the water points are manned by "unofficial" officials. Having said this though, blames should rest squarely on the shoulders of organisers for not providing sufficient controls. With yesterday's heat, it's just plain dangerous!
  11. OK, so this was a very poorly organised event. We were scheduled to begin at 06h15 and only got going around 06h25. No biggie. But I couldn't understand why they sent the 10km runners off, then the 21km runners and then after all that, the 42.2km guys? The race started well, although it was hot (24.5 deg at 6am). The pace was easy and I was on track to achieve my goal going up to 30km mark. I'd managed my nutrition and pace in anticipation of the last 10-12km uphill push home. Then, water points ran dry, no coke, no water sachets for the last 12 or so km's. My temperature monitor hit a high of 42deg during the race, even with a 5deg margin of error, we're looking at 37deg. Cramp started to threaten at around 35km's and so it was run/walk for the balance of the race. Official time was 5h34, although for qualification purposes they send Comrades mat to mat time which in my case was 5h24. Either way, I'm in for another qualification run. I think this time it's gonna need to be an event that doesn't carry a rating of 4 in terms of difficulty. I've been told that the Akasia 3-in-1 is rated at 2, and being at the end of Jan, I think that will be my next attempt. Quite possibly a little more of a scientific approach to my training may also be in order. I'll keep you posted. in the interim, have a look at Strava for more info on my morning of pain and suffering, have a look at that route profile as well... EDIT: Can't find entry details for either Johnson Crane Hire or Akasia. Anyone have a URL for me?
  12. Shot, did very little this week, a 10km on Wednesday and a slow 6km this morning. Race pack collected yesterday and all ready for what will hopefully be a quick jog around Soweto on Sunday. A little worried about the weather. Weather forecast says 12-34deg although partly cloudy. I'll keep you all posted, watch the Strava for my time etc.
  13. So, I've been contemplating my nutrition needs for 1st November and have a plan that works well for me on long rides, should be good for a long run too? My problem is that carrying all that cr@p around on a run is cumbersome. Any suggestions WRT carrying apparatus etc. it's gonna be a couple of gels but it becomes bulky when taking 4-5hrs into account.
  14. OK, so my regime has been built up to to the following: Monday 10km (gentle) Wednesday 10km (gentle) Friday 5-8km (fastish) Saturday 15-22km (very gentle) Sunday 3-3.5km swim for cross training. Usually an hour or so. The long run is done at around 6min30sec/km The 10's are at 6min/km The quick one is around 5:30/km I've been battling some injury and have not wanted to push too hard for fear of aggravating the injury. I will do one last longish one (15km) this weekend and will taper next week with two or three sub 10km runs with a light swim at some stage. I am aiming for 4hrs30mins and at the very least a qualifier. I'm afraid I left it quite late so a simple qualifier will do. I'll try to do at least one more marathon next year for training and will hopefully improve my qualification time. This is only my second marathon, so I'm winging it a bit. Feeling pretty strong though. EDIT: Joined the Strava club.
  15. Training going well-ish. I'm back up to 8-10km runs with a pace of 6min/km. Not to fast but I'm trying to get the body used to doing to distance before I focus on the pace. As a novice, I never know if that's the right way to do it, but I'm nervous to "haul ass" when I've been forced to take time off due to injury caused by pushing too hard. General fitness is not too bad and I've entered Soweto Marathon for November, it'll be my second so I know a little of what to expect, and am nervous. Any tips from the vets would be devoured and digested so don't be shy...
  16. I'm going to be attempting my first Comrades. Nervous & excited all in one...
  17. lols, got to the top of a difficult climb on day one of the Cradle Mountain Trophy to find the the route arrow resting against the no bikes sign. If ever there was a photo opportunity, I figured this was it.
  18. My Steed, love this bike.
  19. Got my Sapphire from Clever Training a week or two ago. What a lekker unit. Been sick tho, so haven't had any chance to use it yet
  20. Pity, my incorrect size is a 28mm
  21. www.clevertraining.com Had it delivered to a mate's hotel in Washington and he bought it back for me. Use the DC Rainmaker discount coupon, you'll get 10% off the purchase price.
  22. http://www.natostrap.com/Home/Home.html Only place I could find. Ordered one and it arrived and was the wrong size. They replaced it without asking for the incorrect one back and with no questions asked. Took about a week to arrive with door-to-door. What size are you looking for? Been wearing it on my Garmin fenix 2 for some months now and it's great. I have now upgraded my F2 to the F3 - if the metal band fails to provide the requisite comfort during running, NATO will be relocated.
  23. Garmin fenix 3 Sapphire Edition - arrived from USA last night A little worried about the weight when running though, but if it's a problem, I'll put the rubber strap that came with it on!
