  2. Good work (for a change) - let's hope it is completed and seen through to the end. Wish they would put in a cycle lane going up Fields Hill.
  3. All the girls I know seem to 'support' Federer......
  4. As Nadal went out, I am neutral. I think there was more testosterone in the womans final than there will be in the mens final. Kleenex are missing a great opportunity to sponsor Federer. He cries if he wins, he cries if he loses. Win win for Kleenex.
  5. Don't you mean wary?
  6. Now that sliverback has made his amends and done the right thing perhaps the thread title should be changed?
  7. On 607 its in french but its on - agree with you on stupidsport once again they stuff it up - clearly they are not big on pride in their work
  8. Not trying to be a smartass here but just genuinely trying to understand how this works: It sounds like it is a heart rate monitor strap with a processor that runs an algorithm from which it derives data that is then broadcast on ant+ - is this correct? Would it also be correct that this algorithm could be run on any data set provided by the output of any heart rate monitor when it is being worn. i.e. if one had the algorithm then one could run it on the raw data provided by a standard heart rate monitor so in essence it is the algorithm wherein the value lies and as such would not be published for external verification?
  9. No man, tell her you are a nigerian prince living in exile and you need her help to move hidden millions out of the country............
  10. I was in a small group that broke away on the m7 i think there were 5 or 6 of us and some stayed away for the rest of the race. After the turn around we dropped a few more guys and a I got dropped with 20k's to go. I don't know if there was another group in front of us. I came in at 3:08:39 and the two guys who dropped me came in about 3:05. You were not too far behind us - we thought the group would catch us on the run in to Durban. O1 was a nervous bunch especially after those two crashes - I hit the guy's water bottle from the first crash but managed to stay on. Did the main group get through Rodger Sishi ( Blair Atholl) ok?
  11. It was a great event this year. Well done to the organisers and to the metro. Also saw a few tjop motorists who found a way onto the course but the metro pulled them off very quickly. At Umgeni Road there were a lot of motorists going nuts with hooters blaring and trying to edge forward but the metro were doing their job really well and keeping back a lot of very aggressive motorists. Rodger Sishi (Blair Atholl) was an interesting addition, sand on the road, potholes and at least two uncovered manholes made for some technical riding. @showtime - you weren't in the O1 batch by any chance? @Bronabee - it never gets easier, it just gets faster - well done on finishing a tough race.
  12. To an unreasonable motorist whose time is more important than anyone else's, the fact of a slow moving horsebox in front of them makes them see red - I have seen motorists go off pop at vehicles towing horseboxes, hooting, shouting gesticulating and then pulling off some overtaking move that would have shaken the later great Senna. There is a reason why horsebox's have signs on the back asking motorists to drive considerately. The fact that they don't rant in public about it is probably because no one wants anyone to think they don't like animals so they get a special 'pass'. In one of our local rags though there was one tjop who wrote in ranting about learner drivers on quite suburban roads driving too slowly! I agree if the bunch does not make itself thinner on a wide road and it is safe to do so, then they are being inconsiderate prats, but my point is that it still does not give motorists the right to take the law into their own hands and in the great scheme of things the couple of minutes delay in a motorist's life is not going to end their world. Driving like an idiot may well end their's and other peoples. In certain situations where the road is narrow, it can be dangerous to ride single file as the all important motorist will then try and squeeze through in the face of oncoming traffic when there really isn't the room to do so thereby creating an exceptionally dangerous situation in which the cyclist will always be the loser. In this specific situation in my view, it is safer to ride in a group as the motorist will then be forced to slow down and overtake when it is safe to do so. As for the argument 'well what if it is a blind corner or a blind rise', the answer is that the motorist should be driving through said blind corner or blind rise at a speed at which they can safely stop if there is an unseen obstruction. What if that unseen obstruction is a mother with her children in the car who has just broken down and can't get off the road, or a group of cyclists on a quiet road at an early hour?
  13. Hits the nail on the head
  14. Whilst driving (and occasionally whilst cycling downhill) I have often been stuck behind a 'fully laden horsebox" being towed. More often than not they drive much slower than the speed limit and being a big vehicle with a big horsebox, they are very difficult to overtake. Does that give me a right to drive in a manner that endangers the driver of the towing vehicle or the animals in the horsebox? No. Does that give me a right to hoot at the vehicle - no. What I do is understand they also need to use the road, they have a cargo that is precious to them and they need to drive very carefully so as not to throw the animals around. so I understand their situation, exercise patience and consideration and wait until it is safe to pass in a manner that it is not going to frighten or endanger either the driver or the animals, no matter how long it takes. Pretty much the same thing I do when I come up behind a group of cyclists. All road users have a right to use the road. If the horsebox does not look roadworthy, or has no number plate or is in some way infringing the road traffic laws (eg by driving in the emergency lane - which they frequently do) do I have the right to then to endanger human and animal lives. I don't. What must i do? Rant and rave in public forums about "inconsiderate horsebox towers". Ask you to move over? Politely hoot? Or should I just be patient and understanding? I choose to opt for being patient and understanding. You can also make the same choice. I agree that cyclists taking up a whole road is not a good thing, but at the end of the day it does not entitle any motorist to endanger lives or take the law into their own hands. The motorist's duty is to wait until it is safe to overtake. Seriously a bit of patience means we will all get there in the end safely and with a lot less stress in our lives.
  15. I think drive chain must be the next biggest innovation, wireless "in hub" & in BB gears powered hydraulically or electronically like amasendeinja suggests with buttons replacing shifters perhaps? Also perhaps a total rethink on how we sit and pedal with positions shifting from horizontal to more vertical so you 'push back' on the pedals - picture how motorcycle drag racers sit on their special drag bikes, obviously with support for the chest. Would be tricky on single track though and would be more suited to road though.
  16. Really depends on what you want. Comfort - dual no question. Your question makes it clear you are after speed. For speed - lightness in body first then bike, and seriously consider a HT as in my own view, more time is lost going slowly up a hill than by descending a bit slower because you are on a HT. North Shore has it spot on. Skills can be learnt and improved thereby improving your descending speed to the point where the difference between you and someone who matches you in fitness on a dual is not that far apart. A heavy bike will always be heavy and harder to get up a hill than a lighter bike. I have gone from an alu dual at 12.5kg's to a carbon HT at 10.5kg and it has made a big difference. You will get a much bigger hammering on a HT though, but increasing flexibility, fitness and skills will minimize this. also on shorter races this is not a huge problem. I agree that on stage races you have to be very fit to take the hammering a HT dishes out day in day out.
  17. Sani Pass?
  18. I was a bad climber until I learnt how to suffer, then I was mediocre climber. I dropped 11kg's and now i am an ok climber. I plan to drop 3 or 4 more kg's and then i will be slightly better than average. The moral: hard work and discipline over time will get you there.
  19. I remember you - we had a small group that worked well together - the chap on the bianchi thought a group of about 15 got away in front of us - as you say we will see tomorrow. The heat got to me bit.
  20. I was on the blue & white old Look bike in Mr Price kit - I am not sure where the rest of the group was - I got in late to the start batch so not sure if a group went off the front.
  21. So how did all you guys in K batch go? I finished in +- 3hrs 18.
  22. Move to kwazulu Natal - we have KZN series which runs monthly from now for the next 6 or 7 months
  23. At Hill2hill I saw a guy getting ready to pee in the chute against the wire fence. I waited until he started and then told him it was electrified. I suppose it was a bit mean but the look on his face was priceless!
  24. Makes my recent ride from Jhb (Nigel) to Durban in two days seem like a bit of wuss ride! Well done.
  25. +1 i have the Romin on both road and mtb - awesome saddle - looks like an ass hatchet but is very comfortable - the cut away also stops chafing in those areas as well - also tough - mine survived a 60km/h session of tar chewing with only minor scuff marks - unlike the rest of me
