  1. The comm pacing the break was not Shameeq. We tried crossing but could see the break sitting behind the car.  I first called the bike marshall to tell the comm to move. Then he moved in between the the riders and the cars.

I then told Shameeq to tell the comm, older man, so move away. He went and sat behind the break until Shameeq cane back to the main bunch, he then again sat right in front of them.

The stop was a joke. I was one of the guys pacing, we were about 10 guys pacing, sitting on the left yellow. The guys at the back crossed the white line, to be expected with 150 riders in that narrow road. To stop the riders doing nothing wrong was just crazy.

In the old days the bike marshalls warned the guys once if the crossed the white line with a yellow card. The 2nd time you got a red card and the marshall took you out the back. You had to unpin your  number. Race over. The white line was like the end of the road.

The way Shameeq stopped to race was dangerous. On a drag, going full gas. Get to the top, bakkie parked across the road. Crazy. No warning. Nothing

Doing my first Desert Dash this year. We are a team of 4, so doing the relay.

Does the route stay the same every year? Or does it change? Last year it was:

    Stage 1: 100km / 1223m

    Stage 2: 76km / 1470m

    Stage 3: 86km / 377m

    Stage 4: 83km / 164m

    Stage 5: 47km / 451m

    https://desertdashnamibia.com/rider-info/the-route.html

Can anyone give some advice on how difficult or easy each stage is? We need to figure out which rider does what leg of the race. 🙂

Stage 1 have a few nasty rollers at the start.

Stage 2 is tuff. Lots op punchy climbs.

    Stage 3 lots of sand.

Stage for is a very nice stage. But remember the rider doing 4 is also doing 5 with the rest of the team. They are then well rested and like puttingvyou in the hurtbox.

  3. Keep it simple like last year.

No backup, stop if you want to feed, grap a bottle and go.

Feeding on the go will be a disaster, the average cyclist don't have the skill to grap a musette on the go.

    just my 2c

  4. Nice route from Dwarskerbos to Aurora, then you can go up te mountain to the Tower, about a 12 km climb if I remember correctly, 5% avg Gradient. 90km there and back, can share some Strava links with you on some of the Gravel loops I do in that area.

I see Tom beat Theuns. Is that a surprise?

yes, i know its 2 different cats, i'm just looking at overall. and i see Tom is in an older cat too

    Tom had a great ride.

Caught my whole field within the first 18km. Just rolled in to the finish. Saving energy for Sunday.

But yes, Tom is an absolute beast on a TT bike.

  6. If you want to ride it enter the SwartbergXtreme race later this year. It will be the 3rd year they running this race.

You start 10km outside of Oudtshoorn, go over Swartberg pass down to the hell, turn around and go left at the T-junction to Prince Albert. Make another u-turn just before the tar road and head back to Oudtshoorn over Swartberg pass from Prince Albert's side.

Fun event and the organizer, Pienaar, really put in a lot of effort.

Speaking of crashes, Anyone have news on the lady from the PEAK team in the celeste colour jerseys who crashed basically right under the Cogmanskloof pass and who was taken to hospital?

Then I only heard after the race that a marshall has sadly passed away? some team was saying they rode past him and he was already covered with a foil blanket, No damage to his motorbike so they assumed it was a heart attack??

    It was not a marshal.

It was a man and his wife touring. They hit a Guinea fowl and crashed. The wife was taken to hospital. :(

After seing a commissaires car driving into the bunch causing a bad bad crash, I can tell you that's the minimum, you don't want anyone to be allowed to drive close to the bunch without any form of training

That was not the Comms fault. The riders were on the wrong side of the road. If he did not do that, the on comming car would have killed all the guys on the wrong side of the road.

Please tell more about the "special license"

    Anyone can get the license.

You get notes to study with all the rules and write an exam. If you pass you get your license. You need at least a Level C managers license. You must renew it every year.

They had the course sometime last week in Cape Town, a month ago in Oudtshoorn.

participants will receive an email tonight with their seeded group and starting time.

some interesting info - - - the first starting group has 32 riders  , group 2 has 27 riders - these 2 groups consist of non-WP League riders taking into their performance on racetec. the next 3 groups were seeded according to the category they race in at WP Road League - cat 3 , 28 riders , cat 2 (group 4) 23 riders , and cat 1 (group 5) 23 riders. participants without WP League events but whose average speed in various PPA races and their PPA seeding qualified them for a 'wp category' were added to the categories. but we have tried to err on the side of caution and seeded them into the 'slower group'. there is a 30 minute time gap between each group. the race officials have been given the starting times and we have received no objections so lets wait for the email comms.

30 minutes between Cat 1 and Cat 2 on a flat race 🤯

Let's be honest, what are the chances that there will be a break which won't contain RDX and MadMAas guys. I mean when last did Theuns do a race that he never actually stood on the podium for(3rd on Sat and 1st on SUnday), and Trotsky seems to be in good form, 2nd on Saturday and 3rd on Sunday in Oudtshoorn. MadMacs are always well represented too but we cannot forget Alan Hatherly aswell as I assume he will still be in CT as he was supposed to be riding Epic.

Problem is the race organizers are still one of those that believe that Vets can't race with the elites. The Cycle Tour had 4 Vets in the top 5.

We will start in the bunch behind the elites.

  12. Would love to see the numbers in comparison to the 2019 edition in PTA from a participation and spectator point of view. The vibe, crowds and participation was awesome in PTA and having it a very short circuit there was plenty opportunity for the crowds to see the riders and support!

Just what is needed to grow the support in my view.

Can't really compare the two as spectators were not allowed this year due to Covid-19. But I must agree, the atmosphere going up Tom Jenkins was the best I have ever seen in any road race in SA. Even better than Suikerbossie in the Argus :)

  13. If you feel like getting your legs shredded, try the SA Masters series. Not sure when their next event is but that will sure give you a workout.

If I feel like sitting in Zone 7 I just browse the zwiftpower.com website, pick something that suits my available time and go for it.

We have the SA Masters race every Wednesday at 19:15. You can also look for the Masters SA series page on facebook for more details.
