  1. Well done to everyone who finished, it was an hard one but what an experience!!! To all the 1x1 riders, I think we were 3, also very well done and to the guy at the start who told me "you are f$&@% crazy to ride the TB with SSĀ®", we've finished 1am, unfortunately this was our first one and our check point organization skills was a bit poor and ended up costing us 3 hours.....ooooppppppsssss. Awesome awesome journey!!!!
  2. What happened?
  3. Just use postnet, will be delivered the next day for 100 bucks
  4. I have a Virb Elite. The thing for me is that the GoPro is just a video camera. With the Virb you can experience more in the sense of what the user/player experienced during the event as it has the GPS Location, Speed, Cadence, HR, Altitude, Water Level, G-Force etc build into the footage. So the viewer can experience, or understand the footage better than the footage of eg. a GoPro. If the Virb is for example on your helmet, you can control it from your Edge unit, so you can either put recording on or off and you can click on your edge and take a photo. The virb system setting is also available through an app on the App Store or Play Store. No need for extra casings as the unit is waterproof as is.Loads of mounts available online at http://www.rammount.com/NewProducts/GARMINVIRBActionCameraMounts/tabid/4940/Default.aspx?utm_source=The+RAM+Mount+Newsletter&utm_campaign=963401ca0c-Garmin_VIRB&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b73781a915-963401ca0c-94702025
  5. Mtb style, normal seatpost with a "fris" cable tie at the top and bottom....
  6. As far as I know they are good bikes and a good brand, the road bikes, I had one in the past. A little bit unknown in SA, but you'll see them far and few between. I assume he bought this one http://www.carrera-podium.it/bikes/mtb-rock-27-5
  7. Just to add...you won't save 150g, think about it. You save the following, front shifter, cable and derailleur. The gripshift is super light. Then front crank is carbon(both xo1 and xx1) plus you loose the extra screws of the FD needed for the 2nd or 3rd chainring, then a 11 spd chain which is thinner, RD which is much lighter in both options and the one piece cassette weight. You save much more than 150g and a lot of hassles/maintenance of a whole separate front shifter and FD. You cant go wrong!
  8. Just done the J2C on SS and my female partner did it on 1x11, she's quite small and easily came right with a 32T and rode everything(refering to the last 3 days as per your question), I would recommend a 34T front chainring for any guy. The sani doesn't have really long gradient climbs even on day 2 and when would you use your granny gear anyways. The 1x11 setup is awesome, less maintenance and very reliable, less weight, less that can go wrong with your front derailler as well(mud, cable stretch etc). The one difference between the gripshift and shifter option is the with gripshift you can go from top to bottom or visa versa in one movement which eg. replaces the option with 2x10 of dropping the chain to the small chainring when approaching a climb. I don't think the normal 1x11 shifters will allow you that. 1x11(x01 or xx1) is the way to go, as I said we did the J2C with them without any hicups what so ever!!!
  9. Just convinced me again to do the J2C on my SSR in 2 weeks time :-)
  10. The chain might also be too long as it is a new chain. Most lbs miss that part when installing it.
  11. Hi militarac, I'm also doing my first Joberg2C on singlespeed rigid this year, my female partner is riding on a normal geared bike though. I would say you need to at least take a few gears with, I'm taking 34T(32T as spare) with 16,17 & 19T cogs for the various days which I worked out. I also tried to train in Knysna for while to see whats possible for which gear ratio's etc. We are currently training about 15-17 hours per week for the next week or so still which varies from 70-160km training rides which helps me to test out my ratio's. The thing I realised the most is that my partner and I climb rather well and normally on the flats she'll sit behind me and we would gun it when I still rode geared. Now that low flying on the flats is a bit more difficult for me(and for her as well) and we quite miss that. Most important thing is to know the route, you've probably done the Sani2C before so you are familiar with the last 3 days, the first 2 days are relatively flat so my only challenge will be day 3 to 6 which is a bit unknown to me. Grant Usher helped me tremendously with the SS and the gear ratio's and he should be there as well.
Dis hoekom jy goeie lyne so wel as slegte lyne moet oefen.
  13. Stage 1 cut-off time was 10 hours, 2 teams have finished this stage in more than 10 hours but they can still keep going? How does it work? Tomorrow is 8.5 hours.

    Argus 2014

They guys(and girls) riding in the VA, VB, VC, VM, A & % bunch have a LOT of guts, I've done it in the past and its really impressive and I respect it tremendously! I've done more Arguses than I can count on 2 hands and I need to claim that we were riding the above mentioned tandem. Knowing how racing goes in the Argus, everyone in those groups aiming for a sub 3 etc and how hectic the racing bunches ride I specifically moved over to the non-racing line(like skistar15 mentioned) with another tandem or 2 behind us. And after a few minutes this guy(VA630) just rode into the back of the tandem quite fast and hit my stoker so hard that her handlebars turned 45 degrees and she hurt her neck in the process. What the guy was actually thinking I really don't know as we were clearly out of the way, probably he lost his concentration or something which I can also understand in bunches like that. Obviously I wasn't planning to thank or kiss him and I got a fright so I lost it a bit and shouted at him. It's something to fall on a single bike but to fall on a tandem the stoker normally gets hurt much worse and the stoker being me GF it is quite a responsibility to ride responsible on a tandem. My apologies for VA630. On the other hand, the crash at the end with that mens tandem pushing the guy out of the way is also unacceptable! The tandem came from way behind the bunch, squeezing in between the single riders and sprinting for 2nd place with the other tandem to the left. The funny thing is there is no second tandem places in the Argus(Only 1st Mixed, 1st Mens and 1st Women's categories). That tandem should be banned from the Argus, it's totally on their heads causing that accident!
  15. When last did it rain during any Argus?
  16. Is shatterpruf & hanlou the same person responding to his own posts(both from EC and both 1 post) and frightening each other to take legal action? bwhahahaha
  17. Piet, in 2015 you'll be in the same age category as Andrew McLean...good luck with that!!! If you can beat him on one of the classic races you might have a chance(except if he gets a flat) and then I'll expose all my secrets to you and I think everybody else as well.
  18. Hi We're currently training for the J2C, so normally we ride on Tuesdays and Thursdays and do 70-80km rides, weekends both days 100+. We're also doing the TB so after the J2C so we will just continue with our long rides. Normally 21-23kmh average, it's relatively flat here in the east except for a few bumps. Welcome to join, just PM me and lets see if we can make a plan. My riding partner is a girl so yes, women welcome. We stay and ride in the "far east" from Silver Lakes and Faerie Glen. Also MTB club rides available in the same area with Lynnwood Cyclery, SingleTrack Cycles and an unknown group who starts at House of coffees on Saturdays but they normally average 25kmh+ so you'll need to be fit.
  19. Also got the email and will consider it!
  20. A bit technical but all ridable, very nice but only 25km if you do all 3 routes. Otherwise, Sedgefield cycleworx are riding Wed, Fri and Sun MTB at 6am I think. Alternatively, if you want to ride with friends or most MTB club rides you need to buy permits(SANParks @ Thesen Island and Club 100) if you want to ride in SANPark areas like Petrus se Brand. Its worth it though.
  21. What a great weekend!!! I can't remember the last lap or 2 though, must have been the mampoer and beer I think. But what a weekend. Thanks everyone for organizing!!!!
  22. Awesome summary of yesterday, thanks for your input, I can't agree more!!!
  23. Nope, you had the whole thing wrong because you didn't read the thread from the beginning and, where did I say "rubbish", please let me know, in actual fact I said everyone rode awesome and it was hard, just the start was a mess/surprise and that is what this whole topic is actually about, where did you come up with this stuff? Just go back and check the thread properly before replying again, Please.
  24. Geez, I will get rid of them in a fair manner by slowing down that they can't sit in my slip or by out running(cycling) them but not by switching them, ever. People get hurt. You don't think they swear at you because you try to switch them the whole time perhaps??? Just asking
  25. Big H*, I don't understand you? Why would you switch others to let them fall hard as stated in your previous post "Those tail sitters I normally deal with. Switch them and make them fall very hard.", if your profile states "Cycling, preferably Tandems, fixing bicycles, amateur wheelbuilder, camping, nature, photography, fishing, fly-tying, astronomy and a general love for life." but no love for other cyclists? Both swearing and switching is not on man, its just a sport and you must know when to sit and make your opposition tired in order to beat them and when to work as a unit together to jump to the front bunch. If you can't plan your strategy properly you have no reason to complain about tail sitters, its all part of the sport.
