    Rapha Festive 500

the whole point of this challange was to get the guys in the northern hemisphere cycling in the cold, 500km in -5 is an achievement. 500km in 26 degree sunshine is average at best. so be a man and double the distance if you want it to be comparable to the poor blokes in the cold countries.
  3. any more hefty boys riding the ztrs (im on arch and hope 2 hubs). need bullet proof kit for epic! was also leaning towards mavics from the reviews. would anyone opt for a full mavic wheel or rather build as above ?
  4. terrible race, standard of mtb races is through the roof while most jhb based road races seem like nothing more than a good way to fatten the wallets of the organisers. terrible start, boring straight roads and a mess of a finish with cars, cyclists, walkers. a disgrace that so little logistical planning and control went into the start/finish area. we pay good money to put ourselves in bigger danger than we would face training on our own.
  5. Is pricing in uk more or less sme as here. Dmned rand has to slide
  6. Personally i find that C for serias mtbers are not as friendly as serias roadies. There appears to be a paradigm shift when one gets 1x11 XX. Or maybe its the bloody roadies crossing over from the tar side...
  7. your ass knows what you re getting yourself into, its a warning sign to the rest of your system. from what i hear that ass might get more problematic and will be in the line of shame at epic 2013. see u there dont take my space. i am training my ass for epic by sitting on cold catholic church benches more and by watching romantic comedies with my wife without shuffling on the cinema seat!
  8. great race, really enjoyed it, it really did have everything, as Bush put it, so a real test of all round abilities and a real eye opener as to weakness areas! what i loved is the mix of bikes, some top guys were on 26HT with triples, others on hard tail carbons and a few young machines on alu 29HT. so it shows you its not about the bike but about your legs and skill. will definitely be back in mankele to train as part of my cape epic prep.
  9. cant wait for this race!!!!
  10. jock comes in winter and we smack it with no training, TDF is in summer. so jock is harder:)
  11. first you need to be fit, if you are not fit for the event you are entering no supplement in the world will help you. once you are fit and your normal dietary requirements are sorted you can look to supplementation. too many times guys blame supplements where they are in fact under trained, malnourished etc. i did 230 km TransBaviaans on 32 endurance, chews, a potato, a pie, an apple, a banana and 32 Gi recovery x2 (makes a great pre ride or during ride protein top up), felt great all day, no bloating etc and finished under 12h.
  12. guys any update on the weather? apparently cape town is a shocker.
  13. unless they are planning a price increase in time for spring, this is called Pre-emptive advertising! what a 'hassel' that they cant use spell check on the website - kill the IT nerd who hasseld so much over the website and charged 10k.
  14. get full sus bike and work on yourself, a hardtail even a 29er is hard on your body and very hard on 100kgs of body. you want a bike that you will ride cos it puts a smile on your face. a hardtail will punish you and you will ride it less. a decent sensible FS will reward your lack of skill, will allow you to rest more and will put a smile on your face the size of china when you rip singletrack and downhills. so you will be a little slower up the hills, a) who cares as you will catch up later and B) work on yourself. 2 years ago i rode in A bunch at argus with my fancy deep section wheels, next to me was a MTBker with hairly legs and a dirty MTB. guess what, he finished sub 3.
  15. i am happy how burry recovered from 19th however a rider of this class should never drop so deep into the field, almost Caster-esque. so a dramatic finish but we need to be honest here we all tipped burry for at least a top 3 if not the win. he was simply not in the same league as the top 2. i blame his wife:) he needs to go monk
  16. any of these riders would kick butt on any bike, give burry a 27,5, kulhavy a hardtail and schurter a 26er and i bet u we would have a similar outcome. olympic performance does not equal to the benefits to every day 75 kg plus people over age of 30. thats why my commencal hardtail 26er was by far the lightest and fastest bike i ever owned but my santa cruz tallboy is my current lovechild. commencal long gone and kidneys thanking me ever since.
  17. thats the only place one would possible need to unclip. unless you need a wee:)
  18. you need to keep in mind this place has been open for a short while , trails take time to mature
  19. after long tedious uphill on dirt road, as you descend before a right hand turn you will see red arrows, follow them , you go around the little pond and follow single track up to a small 'bmx' section with a few bumps and dips.
  20. for 5 people. can be less as well - anything you got really
  21. also i am looking for accommodation (yeah i know its late) for the friday. any one selling?
  22. guys anyone know of transport companies taking bikes down from JHB, not too keen on sticking my mtb on the plane.
  23. they r great!
  24. are the beds still going? before and after the ride?
  25. on another note, who uses what leg cream/oil. any babyoil porn wannabe pervs out there?
