  1. fixed ;-)
  2. The jump from 32 to 34 doesn't make a huge difference, your legs still end up doing most of the work. That being said, I have an 11-34 on my MTB..... 11-34 would look kinda strange on a road bike.... I like the idea though
  3. I used Sealskinz at last years TransBaviaans. They kept my feet warm and dry until we got to a river crossing where there water level was higher than the top of the sock. Needless to say, I squished my way all the way to the next checkpoint. The only downside for me (as others have mentioned) is their thickness, so your shoe does feel a bit tighter. I'd definitely use them again though.
  4. Does anyone have the split time calculator that they had on their website last year? The link on the website doesn't work
  5. Both years I have gone with the 'layered' approach (so I can remove stuff if it gets too hot/uncomfortable). When I get to Bergplaas I change into a long sleeve shirt (t-shirt type material), arm warmers over that (so that the elastic doesn't rub your skin and eventually chafe) and then a long sleeved cycling jersey (the blue one that they gave us at Sani2C 2010)..... last year because it was colder I added a chest warmer and my First Ascent rain jacket over the lot. I was more than warm enough.
  6. Couldn't have said it better myself... I've done one on my dual suspension and one on my hardtail (both 26'ers) and I can't remember one being more comfortable than the other. Over that distance, everything hurts no matter how comfortable the bike
  7. Ja, but he's really fast..... so if he gets scared you might be left alone... although not much scares the Thug, not even Chuck, so you're probably safe Enjoy!!
  8. These Hub okes are all bark and no bite..... besides, for the right price I won't mention where you'll be starting your ride
  9. Thanks splat, I've mailed her a link to this thread.... although I'm picking up from the other thread that your regular group may be a little too fast for her at the moment. Thanks for the info though
  10. Yep, I live in the area and ride there too. Will happily show you around if the time is suitable..
  11. Thanks splat, much appreciated
  12. Only one response from Cape Town....... and there I was thinking the place was full of cyclists ;-) Thanks Le Turbo, I'll see what I can find out...
  13. Wow..... why do I suddenly feel inadequate?!? I guess this is the difference between someone just wanting to finish and someone going for a 10 hour finish
  14. eish, still so much training to do and so little time to do it antonj, best you start putting in those hours now dude.... waiting for a frame isn't going to get you over MAC
  15. Hello Capetonians, So I did a search to try and find out if there are any groups that meet in or around Bergvliet..... poor Daniel has been waiting for 4 years for a response to his post, so I'm hoping someone out there will be a bit kinder to me....... My sister lives in the area and is looking for a group that she can ride with regularly. Are there any such groups out there?
  16. My experience was opposite..... I'd much rather do MAC than Groot Rivier Poort. I guess it depends then on the weather conditions and one's frame of mind at the time ;-) Only 79 days to go!! not that anyone's counting
  17. Visited on Sunday morning. The directions weren't great for someone who isn't familiar with Modderfontein. I was lucky enough to see a couple of MTB'ers meeting up at one of the area's major intersections and they kindly offered for me to follow them. Thank goodness for friendly MTB'ers, or I would've turned around and gone home.. Getting lost was quickly forgotten when we started riding. Fantastic trails, a nice mix of everything and good banter with fellow cyclists. Good way to spend a Sunday morning. Would've been even better if I didn't have to watch my dear friend Joe Low take a pretty spectacular tumble on one of the fast downhill sections..... good news is he survived..... he has a little less skin than when we started, but still fighting fit to see another day I'll definitely be back
  18. This thread has just gone and ruined The Grape Escape for me........... now I have no idea what they're going to make us escape
  19. www.panoramatour.co.za
  20. I've done one Panorama Tour and the terrain is tough!!! I'm in this year, but with little training and bronchitis for the last week, I don't have high expectations. So plan B is to ride as much of it as I can, appreciate the scenery and the company of my good buddy Joe Low and take some 'time out' in White River... If nothing else, it'll be a good training weekend ) good luck to all! PS: As Zoo Cookie pointed out to me.... as long as the ambulance isn't riding behind you, you know you're not last!
  21. I doubt that riding into the area will be a problem, but I foresee a whole heap of injured cyclists at the bottom of Joseph street who are doing 70km/h down the hill and don't realise that there is now a pallisade fence across the road.
  22. Can't wait for my 3rd Transbaviaans experience, the fees are worth being able to ride through a truly spectacular part of our country and experience the hospitality of the Eastern Cape locals. I only hope for warmer weather this year
  23. What sorta time you looking at starting this ride? and how long will we you be riding for?* *mandatory Pink slip application information
  24. If you could do Deloitte half marathon in 2h15, you will comfortably finish the Tough one in under 4h30. I have done 2x Tough ones and besides the Sunrise Monster 32km (I don't know if this still exists), the Tough one is one of the Toughest 32kays on the calendar, but I was still able to finish in under 4 hours... and I'm a pretty slow runner. Go for it... what do you have to lose?
  25. ok, ok... that's just a proverbial smokescreen.. of course I'd remove my bar-ends for you BB, the truth is I'm slow and technically challenged so I'd just hold the group up plus I haven't checked with the minister of home affairs yet if I'd be granted a pink slip
