  1. Thanks

Will take it out of the fridge tonight. Lesson learnt.... Less is more :)

Yup, the problem is, when it gets cold it basically goes dormant and stops doiing its thing. Takes a few ferments to "wake up" properly again.

I was at a stage that the grains were almost doubling every ferment, but not wanting to waste my "white gold" I just made more and more until I got to a point where I thought f@*kit and just chucked the excess.

Now I just use 2 heaped table spoons per liter or so, and the rest is a treat for my dog, and if anyone needs, I just grow some more and give it away. :)

  2. Started my 3rd batch this morning.  But I started this one in the fridge.  Need to slow the whole system down as I am the only one on the Kefir way.

I wouldnt reccomend putting it in the fridge unless you want to store it for a week or more. I found the grains take about 3 ferments to get back to making a decent product after they've been in the fridge. The first few after taking it out, come out like cottage cheese and the whey doesnt mix nicely with the cottage cheesy curds. Rather make less per batch so its just enough to last you until the next batch is ready.

But I know the feeling, once the grains start multiplying nicely, it can get a bit out of control :D

  3. @Tombeej

The whey (yellow liquid) can you drink that?  Or chuck it?  Sorry for the dumb questions...

    You drink both..

I usually give it a stir before straining it to mix the curds and whey back together, then double strain, first through a plastic colander and finally through a plastic sieve with finer holes.

The finer sieve catches all the new baby grains that have grown during the ferment and makes the curds come through smoother.

  4. Because of the fermentation, drinking kefir is obviously a unique taste - sour but not unpleasant - and has a real 'zing' aftertaste.

My favourite drink is a glass of fermented milk from kefir with honey stirred in for taste. YUM.

I also like to add a teaspoon of that "super fruit and veggie drink" from Solal, makes it into a super healthy yogi sip type drink!!

  5. I've been culturing kefir for 3 or 4 months now.

It is great for colon health as it has a fork load of probiotics in it.

I have found the woolies milk works the best out of the pastuerised milks, but ive used clover with no problem when I didn't have woolies milk.

It does become quite a mission to keep all the grains under control once they get going, these days I add 2 big table spoons to just over 1 l milk, and whatever is left over I give to my dog - she quite enjoys the grains :)

If anyone is keen in some grains, I can keep the excess, as when its nice and healthy I get about 1 big table spoon of new grains every 2 days.

You can also do a 2nd ferment once you strained the grains out - add some lime peels to the bottle and leave for another day before refridgerating - gives it a nice limey taste and also takes that extreme sour edge off.

I have also got a nice production run of Kombucha going which is awesome - but thats a whole other story...

  6. Hi Guys.

Looking for a bit of advice.

I am in the market for a backpack.

I have a Camelbak Mule but its too big.

I want something small, around 1 Litre of hydration capacity, but it must be able to hold the following spares:

    1. Tube

    2. Phone

    3. Multitool

    4. Pump

    5. Tyre levers

    6. A jacket if i take mine off

    7. Sahmurai (the tubeless repair thing)

    Any ideas?

A 1l hydration pack is not very #enduro, bro! :P

Never the less how about the Lobo? It takes a 3l bladder, but is much more compact thatn the Mule.

  7. So... I found some awesome new #enduro shoes, that may convince me to break my FiveTen habit (I currently have 7 pairs  )

Behold... the Adidas Terrex Trail Cross...

I still prefer the look of the 510's but nice to have another alternative, especially bwith the stealth rubber

Where do the cleats go ...  :whistling:

Looks like shimano has taken care of that with their sweet looking new AM series shoes:

  8. How do those posts compare to the non stealth reverb, basically the same kind of post just with a cable not hydraulic remote?

Also available in 125mm and 150 drop, and yes cable actuated, which allows you to do the shifter mod to actuate it.

I do find they need more love than the reverb (but really easy to do a basic clean and service at home) to keep it working smoothly, but otherwise a great post.

  9. Thanks again to every one for the advice. Seems the 30.9 is not a popular size if I look around. Still waiting on bike shops to get back to me with prices and availability. The 5400 was not for the stealth version.. The 3800 and 3200 I've seen are for the 31.6 size so now I wait. :)

Have you had a look at the KS posts?

    The i950 should come in around R2500 - R3000.

  10. Thanx Goose!

You're welcome... best upgrade you will ever do on your bike!

Also remember that with the Reverb you have to specify right or left actuation lever, ie do you want the actuation lever on the left or right.

True, however a lot of people will use a right hand actuator on the left, and then it fits underneath the handle bars, instead of on the top

  11. Dropper posts are not bike specific, but they have different diameters, from what I see in the spec sheet your seat tube is 30.9mm, so you will need to get a 30,9mm post.

The 125mm drop one also comes in 380mm and 420mm lengths, I would go with the 380mm based on your seat tube length.

Just remember to measure your seat post at its current height and make sure you have at least 165mm protruding from the seat tube, if its less you may have to look for one with 100mm drop.

  12. Ok - I am working my way through this thread but still back in 2012.... Need to talk current....

    How many Reverbs are there?

Been quoted from 3800 to 5400 for one and now wondering if there is more than one type on the market....

Will confess that the numbers make very little sense to me.

One thing I remember that the small bike has less of a drop than the medium and upward. I think 75mm vs 100mm on the ladies bikes.

I ride a med ladies Spez Rumour - what must I be aware of if I'm looking at the Reverb .

The Spez post comes in also at around 3800. So which do I go for?

    Aaaand GO! :)

There is only one current model of reverb, but it comes in a normal version (cable under saddle) and stealth (internal cable routing) Prices do vary quite a lot so shop around.

Reverb comes in a 125mm drop and a 150mm drop (100mm is not that popular anymore), if you're not too tall 125 should be fine - just check how much your current seat post extends from the seat tube, you need at least 125mm + however long the collar of the dropper is (about another 30 - 40mm at a guess)

Dont know too much about the spez dropper, but you cant go wrong with the reverb.
