  3. Hi FC, I assume the frame is a size up from the previous? Junior/Expert to Pro or similar? Normally the problem comes when we use 1/1/8 wheels in a frame that would normally take 1.5 wheels. Presume the v brake currently is a Mini? A VPS adjustor should take care of the problem... Not sure who has in SA, ones in the pic are Bombshell.. Otherwise ask around over the weekend at SA's, someone must have.. A normal Deore MTB V Brake might work as well, we have a normal V brake on a Pro concept Junior which works... just..
  4. Even with a careful sand or Soda Ash blast, there will always be slight imperfections or pitting in the metal, that you might or might not see... I ended up wet sanding and polishing plenty to get a mirror finish for the paint on one the previous alu frames I had done.. I used Duro paint stripper on the last alu frame... removed the paint like it was butter... Used a pressure washer to take the bubbled paint of and didnt even have to touch it with scraper....
  5. A few years ago I was in this position... except it was my 95 Diamond Back Apex MTB... which had been stolen from my house 6 months before... 7 am, Beyers Naude drive in JHB....I didnt realise it was my bike at first, but the rider caught my eye as the bike looked 'wrong'. spd pedals on the bike and the rider wearing 'going to church shoes' As i was going in the opposite direction, I had to decide what to do.. or going about my business and being on time for work.. I was bothered about the situation enough to turn around and catch up.. Stopped him and offered R500 for the bike... He started negotiating and then I realised it was MY bike... 2 hours later, he was in jail and I had my bike back... just needed new tyres and seat and we were in business! And no it wasnt insured... I was poor at the time.. I still have the bike today.... I have stopped and politely asked a few chaps, white and black, if they would like to sell... Hasnt worked yet, but Im prepared to buy the bike as Im convinced that the chap you see commuting.... more than likely bought the bike in the local township, etc, so he can commute..... and has no idea what it is worth... would rather give him enough money to buy a sturdy bike to commute on... and not penalise the bugger who bought the bike from the thief at the time because thats all he could afford..
  6. Hi I am trying to have a tow-bar fitted onto my vehicle and am told by one supplier to fit a removable tow bar because it is illegal to have a fixed one. The reason for this is because the ball itself covers the numberplate This part of your question is easy... Even without the bike rack, many cars have towbars fitted where the ball obscures the number plate (number plate mounted low on the bumper). Other cars have the numberplate fitted high up on the body and in this case, would not be a problem. If your numberplate will be obscured by the ball part of the towbar once fitted, a removable ball would the way to abide by the law. I know of no law that says it it is illegal to have a fixed ball or hook on the tow bar. Obscuring the numberplate with a towbar or other, is against the law.. Which bike rack you use and what you do with the lights/numberplates is a diff question.
  7. Depends on what the invoice says, rather than the fact that it may be in seperate boxes. Each deperate box should have its own invoice for safety..

  10. Oven cleaner is the easiest way to remove colour ano. I did this to many of my sons bike parts in December in order to polish them before they went back to the anodisers for diff colours. Ano shows up ALL imperfections, so the better the raw finish, the better the new colour result. You can have the parts re anodised bright silver... If not, you are going to be polishing a lot if you dont put a anti tarnish spray or similar over the raw alu.. As for powder coating. This is the second year that I am changing the colour of my sons bike (alu). Last year, the alu frame got somewhat hammered by the sandblasting process and in turn the powder was not smooth at all. This wasnt a problem as the powder was lightly sanded and a clear coat was applied once the new decals had been put on the frame.. The gloss and shine came from the 3 coats of clear coat. This year I did not want it sand blasted again, so used a paint stripper from builders, dura something or other. Worked like a champ after 2 applications. On cro moly or normal steel, the sand blasting doesnt normaly affect the finish and a excellent powder coat is normally obtained. I have had many steel and cro mo items powdered and have never been dissapointed. A lot depends on the chap doing the application though...

  16. With my kids helmets, there is zero diff in weight between their motorcycle helmets and their Bmx full face helmets ( Giro and Bell ). But the diff in ventilation is large.. ( Like all kids, they ride ALL the time, never can get them to stop long enough, so they need the ventilation ) Down hill is few minutes of intense action, ventilation shouldnt be an issue if you are wearing a Motorcycle helmet..
  17. Brad, there is racing ast HOC next Saturday and Kempton the day after... two really good tracks to back into it.. BBi, you are a machine... hope your elbow comes right... Sat.. fall of MTB on right elbow Sun... fall of MTB on right elbow

  19. I have been on the hub for some time now and through this forum have met some really nice guys and gals.. As usual I have been pleasantly suprised at the lengths members go to help one out and indeed the generosity. I have been given a bike for a friend, a fork, stems and other bits and bobs. And bought much stuff here with nary a problem.. But Slowbee takes the cake... I have never met Terry and had never spoken to him. Yet when i asked on the hub if someone had a relative in the UK that I could organise a parcel to be sent to, he called me from CT, arranged a delivery address, organised a mate to bring the parcel over, then delivered the parcel to our office in CT ( got lost on the way I understand ). This from someone who doesnt know me, wouldnt let me reimburse or reward, and was so helpfull that it made my year. Thanks Slowbee, you are a man amongst men.

    eBay buying

I have never paid Vat on my ebay purchases. Suppose it was just the luck of the draw as to the customs guy looking at the parcel.. always some duties, but never vat. You have the right idea as to taking the whole cost into consideration. Wheels and frames are mega bucks to ship. I often get shipping prices from online shops for the same article to check the shipping quote for comparison. Frames and wheels are 'outsize boxes' and tend to attract volumetric charges as opposed to weight. If the ebay seller has good feedback, I wouldnt hesitate. Most guys sell stuff everyday and protect the ratings that they have. If the frame is unique and you can live with the cost of shipping, go for it.

    eBay buying

Flea, I buy often from ebay in terms of BMX stuff for my kids bikes and before that for my motorbikes. I have NEVER had a problem. I pay via paypal ( via credit card ). Most of the big stuff I ship inside the US to friends who bring it over for me, but the smaller stuff has always safely arrived via UPS. Some sellers state upfront that they will not ship internationally and I don't bid on those items. If they dont say anything, then I mail to ask if they will ship to SA. On bigger items the shipping can be prohibitive though..
