  1. You must have a pin head..... (EDIT: Oh yes, and I forgot that for many cycling is a fashion show)
  2. So I did 50 km from Pinetown to Giba, through Giba up to St Heliers, through Hillcrest and back down through New Germany. It was warm but obviously not nearly as warm as a Durban summer but I never once felt the need to remove my helmet to get some air. This is something I'd need to do regularly with my old helmet. This helmet was WAY cooler. I have read some talk of hearing the wind whistling through you helmet and this is put forward as a bad thing. The noise was barely there but you could feel the wind being directed over your head. I like. I also never had a problem with sweat dripping onto my glasses which was an issue I used to have. Or worse it'd drip into my eyes and sting like hell. I was using the bug net pads so not sure if this helped. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase. We'll give it a big test when summer hits Durbs. Thanks. It was stunning although the wind did come up at the end which made for a tough finish into it. The price I paid was on the ASG auction on here. I see buycycle sell it for R1550 (which they claim is a special).
  3. Just heading out for a long ride now in Durban "winter" 25 degree weather and was wondering whether to leave the bug net in. Heading out the door so I might this time and see how it goes.
  4. Doesn't really answer the question but thanks.
  5. As an aside, one would assume cost, but why would they mix SRAM and Shimano components on a bike like that? Seeing some of these prices now (and yes I know that is a 29") makes me stoked I got my Silverback Phoenix for the price I did! Deore and SLX components for R4.5k
  6. Just as an aside, other threads, when I moan about the quality of many cellphone photos, I have been told to share some taken with my Nokia N8. All photos here and elsewhere are taken with this phone.
  7. How did you guys mount your visor on the Sterling? The instructions are far from clear and I put it on via trial and error but am not certain it is correct. There are pictures of how mine is done below. The part that concerns me is circled on the right. If you push on the front of the visor it digs into the "foam" and this can happen when putting the helmet down as the visor sticks out. the visor fits tight and looks right but I am just wondering if others did it differently:
  8. Ah, yes, that's it.
  9. I hope this is not the case as this was the exact reason for me getting a new helmet. Are you using it with the bug net?
  10. Not quite a review, yet, but thought I'd extend my thanks to ASG for my new Rudy Project Sterling helmet that I got for the bargain price of R1020 including shipping! Also paid yesterday at lunch time via internet banking at it arrived about an hour ago in Durban. Brilliant service. To sweeten the deal they threw in a T-Shirt which I assumed would be a crappy one but it is really stunning. I haven't taken a photo of the T-shirt as I am wearing it but it is black with a real cool dragon design on the back. I was a little concerned with the size at first as I requested a S/M even though my head measures 58cm, which is right on the cusp of the two sizes, and when I first put it on there was not much space to manoeuvre. A bit of strap adjusting and it soon felt great. I much prefer a smaller helmet to one where my head rattles around inside. I have to admit that the buckles on the side are a little weird and unless you get them posititioned just right they dig into you due to their raised shape. Not really the ideal shape to take the contour of your face but get it positioned just under your ear and it feels ok. The helmet came with the bug net fitted and a spare set of pads. I don't really see the need for the bug net myself but I'll probably keep it in for a while and see how it goes. I want as much air as possible so I'll see if it stops the airflow at all. I'll give more feedback once I've ridden but will admit upfront that my expertise when it comes to helmets is rather limited so I'll probably love it I'll be sure to give the helmet a test over the weekend but first impressions are good.
  11. So anyone ordered from the sire mentioned earlier recently or considering it? Please share your experiences. I'm tempted.... http://www.cycling-jersey.net/cycling-sets/cycling-jersey-and-shorts-sets.html And what price does full cycling kit like this go for in SA?
  12. Ridiculous really. I have one bike, one helmet, one pair of shoes, one bike rack, two pairs of cycling kit. Anything more is silly. Surely? Sell the extras or even better give them away to development teams as money is obviously not an issue.
  13. I got the M520s (although I was looking for the M530s but they are a little scarce in KZN at the moment) and Specialized Comp MTB shoes. Very happy on the three rides I have done thus far with just a few falls overs and bruises to speak of. Have to admit on the one ride the top of my right foot started getting a bit sore but wrote it off as having to get used to them and perhaps having the rachet too tight.
  14. Yip, never likely to happen at high speed. Although the bruising on the inside of my leg seems to indicate that it was more painful than assumed But there is little chance of mountain biking without the odd bruise, graze and cut.
  15. You guys should spend less time off your bikes then you won't battle so much with mud...
  16. Here I was considering it again seeing as so many sing the praises of a fit and then you read some of the comments in here which seem to contradict this. Had another friend also tell me that he tried it and everything was right anyway and nothing was changed. I'd be very peeved!
  17. Set mine about half way, effectively turned to the one end and then turned about 7 clicks back which resulted in the tension nut being centred. As a cleat newbie this has worked for me and this is before they have even "worn in" as has been suggested online. Yes, I have had the odd "fall" where the back wheel has slipped out on a wet root or gravel on rock and I haven't got my foot out in time.
  18. Interesting that you say that as when I was doing research I recall many comments about how good they are in the mud. Just did a quick google now and came up with these: From Shimano, so biased MTBR.com reviews On REI.com
  19. Don't forget guys... this Friday! 17:30pm at Moses Madhida for a ride of about 25km through the streets of Durbs https://www.facebook.com/events/273514362756223/
  20. I also have this watering eyes issue. I wear glasses though so no chance of sunnies for me and unfortuantely no suggestions. Others riding with me don't wear anything and whened asked claim they don't have a problem. Clearly some eyes water a lot sooner than others. EDIT: You guys need to spend less time outdoors and more time on the internet if that's the first time you have seen the bouncing boobs gif
  21. I probably will but in Durbs we are hardcore.... lunchtime temp here is 25!
  22. I do not argue that it is fun but why bother trying to diss other disciplines in the article. Note the section I quoted? Notice that it was in the article? Perhaps that should be a hint that I did read it but rather than being impressed I was left pondering why one discipline always has to have a dig at another... hence my comments! What difference should it make if a person wears lycra, baggies or underpants? And why diss XC? Again, I'll reiterate, it is this stupid "we're better than you attitude". PS I do not have a "discipline", I just ride my bike and enjoy it so I do not have sides to take.
  23. So they are punting it as a format for image conscious, not so fit, "we're so much better than you" types?
  24. There are plenty cycle shops between Pinetown and Waterfall. Deciding which is the best would be for you to decide. You are also in close proximity to Giba Gorge Mountain bike park so finding others to ride with will not be an issue but even if it is you are fine riding Giba alone. Some of the cycle shops organise early morning rides, with the previously mentioned Concept Cyclery being one of them, but the others do too, just ask around. And welcome to Durbs. Enjoy the weather and all year round riding with just a cycling shirt and shorts (ok, and maybe a thin jacket on early winter mornings).
  25. I agree it is funny. The part that is funny is a 25 year old telling us how things used to be! ha ha ha ha....
