  1. As I said it is not the panacea to safety whilst cycling. Just like air bags are safety belts are not the be all and end all for safety in a car. It works well, to very well, in a lot of scenarios, but it comes with its own dangers! Mileage on individual scenarios will differ oh, and I've cracked two lids in 4 years. Luckily no pips yet!
  2. And once in a car accident, 20 years ago, I did NOT wear a safety belt. Not wearing it saved my life! Roof got torn off, I was flung out of the car, car landed upside down on windowsills with top of door frames bent in... There is a story out there to proof or disproof whatever we want!
  3. You guys are adding a few selective NOTs to his statement. Does not falsify, nor oppose what he said. Being aware, and removing your yourself from a possible injurious incident without a helmet is still better than rolling into it WITH a helmet. He never said do NOT wear a helmet, he said that people think they are protected from all (major?) harm when they wear a helmet and hence take risks they would not take if they did not wear it. Much like a rock climber with a safety rope... Will you take bigger risks with or without a safety rope/harness? In anycase, wear your helmet AND be vigilant. Remember YOU are the only thinking person on the road! And possible, the only one out there that cares about your safety!
  4. Kudos / KOMs and noddy badges Calculated power if you entered all the weights (rider/bike/etc)
  5. If you view your profile, there is a tab listing KOMs
  6. Glad to see you found the baby you so desperately wanted Dirt*mom™ We tried our best to maintain the status quo until your return!
  7. The g33k in me w@nt$ Anybody who wants to buy an Edge 800?
  8. Subtle nuances to each. Strava - definitely cycling focus - built around the segments & leaderboards (and the 'virtual' power calculations) They use the same rating for running gradients as for cycling - any runner will tell you that is just plain nuts! Garmin Connect - was ho-hum, but they are trying to turn it into a social experience. FTP calcs are apparently the same as that of TrainingPeaks TrainingPeaks - as a free tool it does not really compare to the other free tools out there. If you are serious, yes! They have programs you can download, coaches use it as a communications/monitoring tool. TP website is only one of 3 tools they have: phone app & PC app. each with different features, but unless you are not a paying member it is a bit disjointed. Endomono - somewhat of a general tool - What I appreciate is the stats graphs I'll rank them as follows: 4. Endomondo - hobbyist 3. Strava - serious hobbyist (wannabe pro-ams) 2. Garmin Connect - (the lost child of the bunch!) I'm slotting in here because it caters for more sensors than Strava - but in general you cannot zoom in to get to the detail. It can easily slot in between Endo & Strava as well 1. TrainingPeaks (Pros)
  9. It has been there for a month or so. Causing major havoc with group rides due to all the stopping (riding & thinking) and rubber necking!
  10. True, lets hope there will be MASSIVE support for the official event!
  11. somehow (yes without full internet access at the office) none of these seem to have any 'official' status. Let us wait for the family and friends to deal with their personaly tragedy and loss and first do what must be done, and THEN we help to organise/attend a protest ride in the fullest sense of the word! No official body will just jump in and organise a ride in memory for Burry without consulting his family (and maybe organise it for a greater cause: safety and/or songo.info, whatever THEY deem worthy and applicable), so please lay off the pressure on PPA/CSA/CGC/whoever. Allow them to get to grips with the situation first. If anybody feels that officialdom is moving to slowly why not contact them and volunteer to assist, rather splintering and diluting what should be a massive country-wide concurrent protest & memorial. And please do not try and politicize their/our loss!
  12. To all the organisers of the various events for this weekend (and whenever): Why not get in touch with the people behind the Burry Stander FB page / his sponsors / team mates / family and volunteer to assist with organising the 'local chapter' of the ride for him?
  13. It will merely dilute the effect of the rides. Lots of people will attend the 'wrong' event, hence the call for one (possibly nationwide), properly organised and published event. Why not leave this to the people who were really close to Burry, rather than creating a lot of splinter groups? To those who are organising/attending the rides this weekend (tonight even), what are you hoping to accomplish with the ride? Awareness, I hear? What / where / how / who with?
  14. Gareth Edwards ‏@GarethEdwardsSA Will also be speaking to Dave Bellairs, @TheCycleTour, at 7:30am about calls for protection of cyclists and athletes in SA. #burrystander edit:Co-host of Morning News Today on eNCA. Weekdays 06:00 to 09:00 CAT. eNCA office, Bike, Road. · http://www.enca.com
  15. Gareth Edwards ‏@GarethEdwardsSA The driver of a minibus taxi involved in the accident that killed Burry Stander has been questioned and released.
  16. People, hang on! this from Burry's FB fan page: Burry Stander · 5,585 like this.about a minute ago · There will be a memorial ride next week, please give us the time to do this justice and organise it properly. Details will follow with the official statement. #burrystander
  17. Repeating this just to keep the 'facts' at the top? Matthew Savides ‏@matthewsavides Official comment from Col Jay Naicker of KZN SAPS says it was not a hit and run. #BurryStander 33m Matthew Savides ‏@matthewsavides "The taxi driver allegedly stopped after the accident until the arrival of police," Col Jay Naicker. #BurryStander Matthew Savides ‏@matthewsavides Apparently it was not a hit-and-run, and the taxi parked off at the scene. But still trying to get more details. #BurryStander
  18. never been. not going (again)
  19. Somebody please pull out all the scare stories of blood in urine / urine discoloration from Wikipedia!
  20. urinate / urine
  21. Did you flag the ride, or did you flag the segment? Important to click through to the ride on which the 'offence' occurred Exactly, if something on the ride is dodgy, then the ride is dodgy. The WHOLE ride!
  22. I bought a new bike (extended lunch!), so will not be able to make the 29er, lycra ride. Be fast hey!
  23. "sport", or recreation?
