Agree with all above, except spending cash on a mechanical package. I got onto the Hub to ask about a good mechanic / mechanical package at the beginning of this year. A couple of the experienced guys who have done a few said I'd be wasting my money. On advice, I left it and rather had the bike thoroughly serviced just before Epic. It worked out perfectly. In fact, several guys who handed their mud covered bikes in after day 5 (in think it was? - the muddy one?) were pretty pomped in the morning when they got them back and they had issues that were never properly resolved, like derailleurs not shifting etc. But go with the massages - that's worth every cent.

Don't do it on a road bike. That won't work. Seriously though, you should be fine, even with your current bike.

I've done 2. Sure, it's a jol - but I've let it go to spend the bucks on other races. I don't think the route changes that much anymore, so i think it'll start getting a bit stale. Actually, it's halfway to a Joberg2C entry. Double the price for 3x the riding. Definitely a better bet.

It's a bit of a cliche, but those guys really do make it look easy. Some of those sections are nuts. Plus they average 24kph, so I guess it is pretty intense out there. Just disappointed cause I saw Phillip came top 20 a couple of weeks ago at a world cup race.

And Philip Buys? I saw he ate it right at the beginning, but expected him to come back better than that. 30th overall, I think?

2:29. The trick with a race with a lot of single track in the beginning is to go pretty much flatbox at the beginning to try get a far up as you can. You'll pay for it at the end, but overall it's faster. BTW, do you actually own an RS4 - if so was it the blue one with the Santa Cruz on the back?
