  1. I was at the Cape Town Market in Epping early this morning. Never seen them have so many watermelons on offer. Might have to do with the price decrease brought to our attention by the OP. Based on the assumption that it is a decrease, and that the cheaper melon with the later expiry date was place on the shelf after the more expensive melon with the earlier expiry. Fruit and Veg prices do change very quickly at a wholesale level. Today potatoes were about 50% more than normal (if you could even find any). For some items the supermarkets negotiate fixed prices but not for everything. I know this because they stand next to me at the market buying the same produce.

    Not Dangerous

Agreed, the speed of commuters can be significant in South Africa but with more non-sporting riders (those that only ride to get from A to B), routes separated from motorised traffic and a larger number of riders, I believe the pace will naturally slow down. Looking at the use of the lanes as depicted at the link, you can't speed too much without weaving past everyone like a complete wanker. No Strava segments on commuting routes It has been shown in other countries that infrastructure is key to the uptake of commuting cycling. Unfortunately, trying to convince decision makers to build infrastructure before the demand exists is tricky. New York has shown how people flocked to more people friendly streets and commuting routes (the cycling examples start at 9 min but watch it all): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LujWrkYsl64

    Not Dangerous

Here are some photos of utopia for all the commuters out there. http://aseasyasridin.../not-dangerous/ Sadly, I don't see the political drive for such a sensible policy being implement here, so stuck with the bright t-shirts, lights and helmets we are. We can dream though.
  4. I could be mistaken but I think the sales person was confused as I haven't seen such a provision in the CPA.
  5. Anyone who deals with a Shimano distributor should be able to order them for you. I know Coolheat distribute the Zee stuff.
  6. Congrats on getting your bike dialed. Enjoy! Those beads on the head tube, you could save a few grams there.
  7. I assume your previous wheel on the same fork was not out of alignment? Just have to check The shop really should have let you know that they were planning to file your fork as it will be difficult (if not impossible) to return it to it's original state. Even if they did, it still sounds like a suspect procedure.
  8. I was always under the impression that the more weight on a tyre the more grip. Hence the lose of grip when you get out the saddle and the use of aerodynamics to create downforce in motor racing. And, before 29er madness, did big guys just walk up all moderate climbs? No, they did not. They rode up them much like they do today.
  9. Niner or Tallboy get my vote. Ridden neither but this is the hub, since when does one need experience to be an expert Maybe when being ridden but I'm willing to back my alu frame over a carbon frame in a dropping on a rock or seat/ bike stand clamp pressure contest. I'm not into aesthetics and a bit of a hazard so my alu is full of scratches and dents. Basically it suits my personality. I don't want to have to treat my bike like a vase every time I handle it. Plus, if I really wanted to be lighter, I'm sure I could save that weight by having one less beer or boerie over the weekend.
  10. Glad to hear it's not just me. I was starting to feel like a weakling. Tyre levers definitely weren't up to the job. The guy at the car tyre garage almost got it on with his bare hands though.
  11. Haha, a bit tricky when you are the LBS selling the tube I was helping them out and got relegated to the kid's bikes. Luckily, the client didn't choose to wait.
  12. The rear wheel is easy compared to taking off and putting back on the tyre. They're so small. After hours, and multiple people trying, we had to take it down to a car tyre place and use their machine to put it back on. I hope you have better luck.
  13. "in sub freezing temperatures, several failures were reported." Those on the coast are probably safe
  14. To have even more fun riding my bike than 2013. To learn to hit the bigger jumps, with confidence. To build and ride a rigid single speed. Be fit enough to charge the downhill at Eselfontein Festival. More commuting.
  15. In this genre, I play League of Legends. I've only played Dota2 briefly, so can't compare.
  16. Might have to pull my ass up the mountain one Wednesday morning to come pay my respect.
  17. I think the Contraband Rogue is also a raw steel finish. Yet to see one in the flesh though.
  18. Big thanks to the organisers. A great event! And that course The never ending single track was pure joy (even on the uphills) but tough as nuts at times. Dead Man Walking was exactly how I felt going up that climb. All-in-all, you can't get a much better mountain bike route than Eselfontein.
  19. Free returns if it doesn't fit. That's how many clothing stores do it e.g. Zando.
  20. Cyclist gets knocked down. Driver charged with not :"leave a distance between the motor vehicle and the cyclist of at least one metre". Driver says cyclist not: "to the left of the left edge of the roadway" or "on the roadway, keeping as close as practicable to the left edge of the roadway". And you have a stalemate, nothing gets done. These rules place more burdens on cyclists (more inhibiting factors to get people on bicycles), and will not improve safety for cyclists at all. Just to show the lack of thought put into this law: Cyclists are forbidden to wear headphones but motorists can (and play their music at full volume). How does this make any sense when the motorist is the one operating the dangerous machinery? Pedestrians and cyclists are weaker participants in traffic. Greater legal onus of care should be place on motorised transport.

  22. Gets my vote. Although I haven't ridden many of the trails mentioned in this thread.
  23. I can offer a friendly coaching lesson after the meeting on Friday. I promise that it won't take more than a few goes to get any beginner riding that trail.
  24. Agreed. I reckon the Plum Pudding descent will claim more casualties than this piece of single track. Can SANParks not install a turnstile at the gate? Or are they trying to stop people riding through their offices?
