  1. There is the odd spot on the red route that some very beginner riders might feel more comfortable walking but otherwise it's a great place to learn to ride. Some people really struggle with confidence on the raised fence crossings though.
  2. Thanks for this guys. Definitely going to start rotating and later the flip.
  3. I ran a simple 1x9 with a single speed Fouriers Turbulence 32T chainring (no ramps and pins), X5 derailleur and 9 speed chain for about 6-8 months without any problems and full confidence in the drivetrain. I only had chain drop on 2 or 3 occasions during this time but only when peddling backwards when stationery to get going again. I didn't think this was enough to justify using a chain guide. The wear on the chainring was not unreasonable. I've continued to use the chainring on my current set up. I am led to believe that this set up will not work as well with a 10 speed chain, as it is thinner than a 9 speed chain. But I'm sure you could get it to work
  4. The total metres climbed over the whole ride. Assuming Garmin reports similarly to other GPS services.
  5. That is hot! Enjoy.
  6. Electronic? Now okes will have even more excuses to bail when it rains. How well do the road electronic driver trains handle the wet? I like the crank.
  7. Yes, I agree. I cycle it and I like having it there nonetheless. I have a habit of banging loudly on the offending parties door or window. I probably shouldn't but I find it therapeutic.
  8. I've carried a lot worse than a wheelset on my back while on a bike. If you're going for a mast record, I'm sure you could devise a good carry method and find a buddy to guard your wheelset while you go up. Was just throwing the idea out there All based on the my somewhat untested idea that you'd gain more time on road tyres over CX tyres to overcome the time of the stop. Stranger things have worked though. But then again, it's kind of cheating. You could just have a whole different bike waiting for you at the tar.
  9. Just wondering, would it make sense to carry a set of road wheels? Change and drop when you hit the tar.
  10. Just in case anyone cares. I took a detour on my commute this morning, the lanes have not been painted along Strand, Albert and Malta. I contacted Brett Heron and he explained that there was an appeal against the awarding of the original tender. The second tender phase is now being completed. No date yet for the completion of the green lanes.
  11. Haha, spot on!
  12. I wonder if it works when combined with traditional lights at the same time.
  13. The City announced that it would paint green lanes, like on Bree, on Strand Street and along the length of Albert Road, starting in August last year. I haven't noticed anything on Strand and was just wondering if Albert Road has seen any progress. I'd appreciate if someone who rides/ drives this route can let me know if anything has been done.
  14. That happens Now you got me scared.
  15. At first glance it doesn't look like it would work that well. My thought always being that bigger and brighter is better but the findings of the study is pretty interesting.
  16. Haha, Momsen it is then New bikes look so impressive and shiny, you'll struggle to consider second hand after that. The Silverback bikes at Cycle Factory are also well priced.
  17. I'm going to be a kill joy and tell you that you don't need to spend thousands on a new tricked out mountain bike to commute 20kms. I feel a bike should always be selected for the functional it will perform and the last time I checked there were no rocky mountain passes between Table View and Paarden Eiland. You should at least consider a 90's or early 2000 26er mountain bike with big slicks. They are stable, comfortable, reliable (if serviced properly) and you'll end up worrying a lot less about damaging it or having it stolen. Plus, I believe that they are a lot better suited for tar than modern oversized, over geared and suspension soft mountain bikes. It won't take a lot to get one working as well as a new bike. Maybe, if you feel comfortable on one, consider a old road bike. Maybe even with a single gear (aka the hipster bike) for super reliability and nearly no maintenance. Your route is largely flat and you don't really need gears and with the right ratio you can cover your commute in no time with little effort. I ride both these types of bikes for commuting. I greatly prefer my Gary Fisher and hipster bike for commuting over my comparably bulky and slow mountain bike. Don't get me wrong, I love my mountain bike but on the mountain Once you've built up your commuting fitness and have an idea of the other type of riding you may want to do, then go splash the cash.
  18. Sadly, "leaders" like Fikile Mbalula are the problem. The top-down approach our politicians and national sporting bodies insist on taking to produce a representative South Africa is utterly useless. Imagine if every South African had the opportunity to pursue their talents in sport, as opposed to the small minority that currently have this chance, we'd be unbeatable. Government must start supporting sport with proper strategy and money. If you train them, they will come.
  19. Half that yellow line should have been a bike lane. There is more than enough space. #JustSaying
  20. Anyone know if a crash ride is happening this year?
  21. Just out of interest, what are the cheaper local options? I'm only aware of the Rapide PitchFork. On One have some reasonably(ish) priced rigids, if you haven't already considered these: http://www.on-one.co...cks/rigid-forks

    Niner EBB II

Maybe also give CoolHeat (the previous distributor) a try, they may have some unsold EBBs lying around the warehouse.
  23. Try contacting Omnico, the South African distributor of Fox shocks, and ask them who they can recommend in your area.
  24. Very sad. The roads in and out of Century City roads are poorly planned and over used. Agreed. I've noticed that I more annoyed and frustrated with the idiocy of drivers when I'm a driver myself than when I'm on my bike.
