What a reality check for me! I knew I was unfit at Sun City but I hoped I am coming back to form. The first sign was when I weighed myself and it was up. Still I hoped that somehow things will be OK. 3:06 later I know a few things 1. Jip that wind does count. 2. I am overweight 3. I am unfit 4. The new route is NOT easy. Now to curl up and whimper. I shipped my bike down to the Cape 10 days before W2W last year. When it became clear that we would be riding in heavy rain and mud I asked the LBS to suggest and fit a tyre. The new Onza Canis had 2 punctures and a sidewall cut on day 1. Never used it again. Geax or Schwalbe only now.

Not liking the downhill start. It is exactly the opposite of what I think is a safe start. I will be off the back hoping to get back later. This was always a "target" race for me to get my seeding sorted. I now think it will be a solid training ride. Safety first. AL start.

WARNING I used to carry daily. For 7 years. Not on the bike but everywhere else. I stopped because I realised I was feeling a bit too brave and had a bit of a Clark Kent "I will protect you" attitude. I have been in situations where shots have been fired - maybe it was because I eventually hoped for stuff to happen. It is the type of kuk I am trying to get away from when cycling. Now we are debating this already. These animals are really getting to me now. Rant over.

Sad story. Didn't Bruce have a similar personal tragedy? Sadly we are defenceless against lawlessness. We will always lose against cars. Patience is not very prevalent in Gauteng. One should take reality in consideration.

I have always felt uncomfortable with this. If you are sitting in the car behind you don't know when you can pass because you are too far back. I don't have an answer but I think the OP has some standing on this topic due to the fact that he actually commutes. I do road and MTB and have cars and a motorbike - common sense is the best one can do for random situations but this feels like playing with the lions' balls. I have stopped doing club rides for this very reason.Not saying it is wrong. It just FEELS wrong.

Possibly more of a true cyclist than many of us. RIP.
