Europe can be steep for sure, that said I recently rented a decent Spezialised for 3 hours at €30, less than a day on a Sora groupset in Cape Town. Our local shops clearly know their target market (confirmed by the fact Cycling Friends even quote in Euros on their SA site). N+1 for the win!! Buying a secondhand bike is definitely the answer actually, now I just need a place to store it 😅

Hey folks, I’m thinking of doing AfrikaBurn this year, and would never do such a thing without a bicycle. I know of the great cause that is Pedals for Peace, which is an option, but honestly I’m looking to drop like R2k max on a bike that I can pimp out, and ride for a week on the sand, and then I’ll happily donate it to a worthy cause/commuter. So my two questions: 1. Where do I find a sub R2k bike - the classifieds here seem to overvalue even their old 20 year 26ers. Or do I just buy a Makro banger? 2. How would I find a worthy person in Cape Town to donate it to thereafter? Thanks all!

Hey guys and girls, I’ve found myself spending a lot more time in Cape Town on business, and looking for where the best spots are to get road bike rentals in Cape Town for a single day. The ones I’ve found online seem to be having a laugh with their pricing. Like R600/day for an entry level bike with Sora, with others even quoting you in Euros. Surely there are shops that aren’t focused on fleecing foreigners? Thanks

Here's an example of how distributors are ripping of South African consumers... CW Cycles (who presumably use grey market stuff) sometimes sell products (such as Continental tyres) at half the retail price. Not only this, but I've heard from bike shops that many of their specials are infact lower than the cost price bike shops are paying for them. Go figure.

I'm having a good laugh now as I remember some users recently slating me and throwing insults my way when I mentioned that wherever possible I bypass the ripoff South African distributors. Ja nee
