  1. Yes, the volume your heart pumps per beat is usually the deciding factor, not beats per minute.
  2. Ha,Ha,Ha, - quick this morning eh.! Ive never had an issue with them, I dont buy much locally but I will drive out of my way to go to the store in the Comaro Crossing centre, the young lady there (dont know her name) who appears to run it is always pleasant and obliging - I dont haggle with prices either, I walk in ask for what I want pay for it (they usually just give me a discount anyway) and I leave - my kind of quick shopping.!
  3. I applied at CGC offices in person and still nothing' date=' the hold up is not at CGC but at CSA .[/quote'] I waited patiently for two months then just before the Argus I got "gatvol" and kicked up a fuss. I recieved an e-mail last night from the club to say it had arrived.! Again I see a lot of patient cyclists who dont want conflict and are prepared to just wait. This is the problem with SA consumers, we dont demand our rights, we wait around and wait around and get pushed from pillar to post and suck it up quietly. Bulls**t, - if CSA could not handle the issue, they should have done something about it, farm the work out, hire extra staff, whatever, - any business in the commercial world who takes 3 months to deliver a PRE PAID item will be out of business in a week - its not acceptable guys, stand up for your rights and demand your cards, not next week, today!! - its irrelevant if you need it today or not, bottom line is - you fulfilled your part of the deal and paid for it, its now in the court of CSA and they need to step up to the plate and deliver.
  4. Absolutely slowtwitch - cant agree more.! I am just refuting the notion that weekend athletes and even semi pros need this equipment - use it if you want, hey, its a free world, but dont tell me its essential.! Thats like a red flag to a bull.!
  5. {QUOTE} Nah porky.. cant agree with everything.. Theres no way You can train seriously without it. I do agree with listening to your body but In between steep hills and techinical singletrack theres no way to hear that little voice when My brain is shouting Harder Faster!! Riding without a HR monitor Is like riding without fuelguages in your car. Your lost. Nonsense Boss - you THINK theres no way you can train seriously without it cos you have been told that. Unlearn those thoughts. Do you really think the young Ethiopean and Kenyan runners have HR moniters?? Okay I shall answer - NO. They dont. They just go and run, and when they are tired they rest, and they are still the best endurance athletes in the world.! The Eastern block countries have produced some of the worlds best endurance athletes training in the snow and howling wind, do you think they all secretly had HR instruments tucked under their parkas?? Do yourself a favour and see if you can get your hands on a Discovery Channel programme (I forget the name now) but do a search, its when they took 10 athletes (already all competitive) and sent them on a 10 week training course - 5 to the best sports science lab in London and 5 to the army. As you can imagine those in the labs trained on the best, had the best diets, had their blood tested to see if they were overtrained, used special computer designed programmes etc, etc, Those in the army, just did what they were told, they ate Army food, went to bed when they could and ran around all day on the parade ground. They never saw a training instrument. At the end of the 10 weeks they were retested. All 5 in the army wiped the pants off the lab trained athletes - the bottom line was, mentally they HAD to adapt whereas the lab traind athletes didnt, they were told when to eat, rest, run etc by machines, and although they improved somewhat, they lost the ability to hear what their body was telling them. Makes very interesting watching - afterwards you will chuck out your HR instrument.
  6. No, personally I think its fine, spinning is quite high intensity so three good spinning classes and a nice endurance ride once a week - perfect.! Slowbee, find a shortish undulating route you can complete in 60minutes, ride it at tempo and time yourself - now base all other rides on this time, (ie) recovery day 5 minutes slower, speed day 5 minutes faster, tempo day 2 minutes either side of your tempo time. In my opinion you should forget the intervals, for best interval results you need the time in saddle as well, your time is too limited to make them effective. By timing yourself everyday you wont dawdle around the route and waste time, - your primary aim is 160 kms (100miler) not a sprint around the block - you need to develop endurance not speed now - that comes later. You could do this on an idt as well, but by the third day you will be bored to tears and by the sixth day you will find reasons to avoid it - get outdoors where there is interest.!
  7. I agree with your sentiments side loading, just disagree with the generalisation of those that do it.!
  8. Sorry YodaJon, waaaay above me. Do intervals work in cycling Slowbee? - I dunno, but I do lampost intervals once a week when I am training for marathons - sprint between two lamposts, trot between two lamposts - I dont know if it makes me stronger, but it certainly increases my craving for a beer.! Thats reason enough for me to do em.!
  9. Phew, another specialist cycle magazine in an already over crowded market. Well, I wish you luck. I think you are gonna need all of it.!
  10. I think theres regularly crashes and deaths at these rallies, usually a by product of too much alcohol, bravado and tetosterone. In my younger days I went to a few Buff events but the Mad Martin rally was my fav, usually held up in the Prieska area near Upington - crazy stuff, used to ride there from Johannesburg with only a change of socks, a small pup tent and bottle or two of whatever was on special at the store - anybody elses go to one? Although I still ride a bike, its now a cruiser with a full screen, foot boards (no weeny little pegs for me) a cd player, saddle bags a rider and pillion backrest and a huge 2 cylinder engine which struggles past 120kms. - no more of that adrenaline pumping, front wheel off the ground speed stuff for me I am afraid, - now I am a fair weather biker - sadly that means I only do about 1000 kms a year, but hey,..........its all about the style now........................or so I heard.!
  11. HaHaHaHa, yah, I agree Eldron, also got the e-mail I see.! I think Fritz and Andrew can also thank their lucky stars they dont live in the USA, cos by now this thread would have reached 380 pages not 38, and the public would be howling outside their shop doors. SA public, ya gotta love em, - fortunately for AM and FP they quick to forgive and forget.!
  12. Jagwil We are all here because we are passionate and emotional about cycling. Not true. I am emotional and passionate about fair, honest and ethical BUSINESS practices. I would react the same way were it any industry. Holy, its not about revenge and its not good enough to say everybody has made mistakes - its way past that. Do we forgive the thug that broke into your house recently, cos he made a mistake, or the mugger who stole my wifes purse, or the thief who leans into your window and brazenly steals your wallet - NO of course not, I can forgive my secretary forgetting to tell me my wife phoned or that the car is ready from service, but brazenly going ahead with a meeting where the intention is to price set - no I cant forgive that.! What would I want to happen? Well, I believe they deserve a fine, and a stiff one at that, I also believe that the public need to start standing up for themselves and start becoming shopping activists instead of just consumers - stop supporting them if you believe their actions were wrong (and I do and will). We all cry about the level of service and support in this country in every industry from safety pins to motor vehicles, yet we are so complacent as consumers, we just shut up and accept everything thrown at us.? WHY? If you want a service level like seen in the USA and other countries, get up of your butt and start complaining, boycott shops if you disgree with their morals and ethics, (look at the fur trade, just a few years ago it was booming, now few people will be seen dead in real fur and the shamefull practices used in killing these animals is in heavy decline) lobby consumer bodies etc - if you like the status quo - well then just sit back and do nothing.!
  13. GoLefty In 2007 Oakley paid an R 212 000 admission of guilt fine for fixing prices at retailers in South Africa. Too many good people are being hurt by what is being posted on this forum. Human beings err and I believe that an error was made in arranging this meeting. Even though Probike did not agree with the meeting we still did attend the meeting which in hindsight is also an error. The intention of the meeting was incorrect, but I am prepared to sign an affidavit that I am not aware of any pricing in the bicycle industry actually being affected and I have many people in the industry from who I can gather this proof. I am with you and hear your view, howver I take a slightly more "hard line approach" - these are not naive kids we are talking about here, these are mature adult businessmen who have been around for quite a long time, it is incumbent on them to KNOW what is allowed and what is not. I cannot and will not accept they were ignorant of the law here. My profession is governed by a body, should I step out of line and I am reported, I face a fine, suspension from duty or at worst I could be prohibited from practising for up to three years. I can also be sued in a court of law. What makes me any differant to the businessmen in this affair?? I find it rather flimsy and a bit of an insult to my intellegence to hear the argument "we didnt know this meeting was illegal" - sorry that is not an excuse, - it was YOUR DUTY to know.! To me, it really dos not matter if the suggested price increases from the meeting were implimented or not - there was clear INTENTION here and that alone is sufficient for me to withdraw my support for ALL of the shops concerned. porky2009-03-20 08:31:55
  14. But it seems as if I have.!!!! Dont put words in my mouth Jagwill, show me where I have made any mudslinging comments. As for my interest, well, thats MY perogative, perhaps you enjoy reading about the price of eggs and the static factor on nylon duvet covers, fine, our interests are not the same,........... dont try and make out I am some kind of closet mudslinger by your comments. ................and you havent stopped me from posting here or anywhere, it seems, unlike you, I have other things to do today which kept me away from the keyboard - again a fairly dismal assumption on your behalf.! ............I have said my piece, I will comment no further on this,........................................ back to the issue.!!
  15. Well, I dont know cos, I ran out of bike lube recently and since then I have JUST been hauling my dipstick out of my car on a regular basis and lubing my chain with the car oil, in my opinion its all oil, how wrong can one go.
