  1. By far the most economical, and no hassle with disposing of dangerous chemicals. Wont kill the lawn. Take the chain off, drop into an empty plastic bottle with with a few ml of Sunlight. Half fill with warm water, shake, rinse, dry with clean cloth, lube and fit. Should not take more than 5 min.

  4. Compare the price of motorcycle drivetrain components (chains and sprockets) with the price of bicycle drivetrain components. The former, in the case of superbikes, capable of transferring hundreds of kilowatts. The latter, hundreds of watts! A bicycle chain should be more than hundred times cheaper than a bike chain, but in reality it is only a few hundred Rands cheaper. The same can be said about sprockets. Bicycle component prices are just crazy!

  7. I still beg to differ. Power = mass x distance / time. The power you need to get up a climb is determined by your total mass (bike + kit + you) multiplied by the altitude gained, and divided by the time it took. Add to that; power needed to overcome wind resistance, plus power to overcome rolling resistance, plus power loss due to friction and other factors in the dive-train, bearings etc. There is also power lost due to components like frames and cranks flexing. The power formula above does not care where the mass is coming from whether it is from you, your bike or your kit. I am afraid you were right in your last sentence: 1 kg is 1 kg after all.
  8. Attaching the shock a third of the way up the down tube just doesn't look like as strong as right next to the BB. Down tubes are quite thin walled in that area. Maybe they encountered problems with the old design?
  9. I will have to agree with you on the bit in bold, but you have to look past the sensationalist journalism. Firstly the two chemicals mentioned in the article are both herbicides not pesticides. Secondly they state that the levels detected fell shy of the 'maximum residue level'. They didn't state how far shy. Was it just below or far below the MRL. I bet it was far below otherwise they would have made a strong point about it. The sad thing is you will have to look far and wide for organically produced wheat and maize in SA. (I don't think it exists.)

  14. I think you misunderstood my previous post. What you describe above is precisely what I was talking about. Putting up DANGER signs left right and centre where it is not really needed serves no purpose and can even be more dangerous. I did a race once where the longer distance joined up with the shorter distances towards the end. On this part of the route every 30 cm drop was marked with 3 down arrows and skull and cross bone signs erected for each slightly rocky section. Every one started ignoring the signs, but with about 5 km to go there was a real big drop off just after a corner. A lot of people went over the handle bars because they ignored the 3 arrow sign and carried to much speed into the obstacle.

  16. I have been mountainbiking for about 8 years and I think that the average Joe's skills and fitness have improved over time. I also enjoy the more technical stuff, never been to a skills clinic. Not because I don't think I will benefit from it, only because nothing available here in the platteland. I try to learn online and practice what I see on youtube. Luckily we have a few technical spots on our 2 River course here in Bothaville to try and stay sharp.

  18. Hammer and punch or blunt screwdriver. Orientate the wheel so that the cassette is facing down. Put a piece of wood or hard rubber under the end cap. Rest the punch through the spokes on the back of the cassette and give it one or two firm blows with the hammer.
  19. Also did the Potch race, it was one of my worst and most uncomfortable in a long time! I made the stupid mistake of having home made pizza with normal wheat flour on friday night as well as a piece on saturday morning. I was bloated and had stomach cramps for the entire 2 and a half hours! Bread or normal pizza before a race? Never again!
  20. Salt deficiency might be the cause of dizziness. On a low carb diet few things might happen that can bring this about. First cutting junk food will decrease your salt intake dramatically. Second eating low carb causes insulin levels to drop, and this will lead to excretion of more fluid, which in turn leads to losing more salt through urine. Typical symptoms of salt loss includes dizziness, fatigue,dull headaches and difficulty concentrating. There is a simple way to find out whether this is the cause: drink a glass of salt water and notice if your symptoms disappear or improve within 30 minutes. Mix half teaspoon of salt in glass of water. If this cures the problem simply increase salt intake in diet, and or include a drink of a salty broth before exercise. I try to eat normal food and don't use protein powders or the like. What about a nice piece of droë wors as a post workout snack? Fat protein and salt in one easy tasty package! Because of the diuretic effect of this diet other minerals are also lost of which magnesium is the most important. Symptoms include muscle cramps during sleep and or exercise. A chelated magnesium supplement might be worthwhile to use while on LCHF. Absorption of the chelated magnesium is reported to be better and other forms of magnesium supplementation might be mildly laxative.
  21. It depends on the groupset and wheels. R7K for an 8 year old bike? Not so sure.
  22. Shorter than 1,5 hours water alone. Longer rides and races on weekends aim for roughly one bottle of energy drink and one gel or similar per hour. Start taking the energy drink 5 min before the start. If you take it earlier you will have an unwanted insulin spike.
  23. If you are back on LCHF ASAP it won't stuff up your good work by eating high carb like pizza once in a while. I have monitored myself on many occasions in the past. I am most of the time back in ketosis within 24 hours after a high carb meal, by being strict the next day. A nice ride will also burn the carbs and help you get back into ketosis sooner.
  24. The last 2 winters on LCHF have been my healthiest WRT colds and flu. Wife had a terrible flu 2 weeks prior to my Sani2C and it passed me by. Nose not even runny on a cold dry freestate morning ride.
  25. I am sorry I forgot one of the best non sugary race foods/snacks ever: boiled baby potatoes with a little bit of butter and salt! Even boiled sweet potato and butter goes down well on a long ride.
