  1. That is excellent! Congratulations and well done sticking to your program. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  2. Have you done the Cango Marathon before? How is the weather there this time of year? Looks like the Kaapse Hoop profile. Good luck!
  3. The only advice I remember from my first OMTOM is to take the first 28km easy. It is flat and fast and you do feel like you are going too slow. If you go out too fast you will regret it in the second half. Chappies is not too bad. You start losing personality going through Houtbay at the 42km mark. There are lots of support on the route and it helps you mentally. Just keep moving. Constantia Nek is very tough. I normally try a walk / run strategy up Constantia, but you will see lots of runners just walking up Constantia Nek, don't let this discourage you. The downhill after the Constantia Nek climb really hurts due to the bad camber. Take it easy on the downhill. Luckily there are lots of trees and you have about 8kms to go. The last 2 km is a climb that breaks me every year. Hearing the announcer and the support at the end helps. Most importantly: LOOK OUT FOR THE CAT EYES!! It is really bad on the downhill after the Chappies climb... I see people fall every single year. So pay attention to the downhills.
  4. I have done it once... It is a gruesome route, but excellent training. Be careful of injuries, take it as a training run. It really hurts... especially the downhills.
  5. So you don't run a minute faster per km if you use an inhaler?
  6. Doing a chilled 15km run tomorrow in the Cradle and then suffering at Pirates on Sunday. Have a good weekend everyone.
  7. Very very sad Condolences to the runner's family.
  8. I can normally feel when it is time to retire my shoes. My feet get hot and I get lower back pain. If you don't feel any niggles and the sole patterns still look good then keep going with them.
  9. Just retired my Asics Nimbus 18 pair on Strava - record mileage of 1136km.
  10. Isn't the average age at Comrades between 43 to 45?
  11. Have a good running weekend everyone. I am not doing any races. Doing a club long run tomorrow and a shorter distance on Sunday, maybe in the Cradle. Good luck to all running Pick n Pay on Sunday Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  12. Very interesting article about running faster: "In the vocabulary of a runner, patience is a dirty word. Runners always want to run faster, run more miles, and crush their personal bests and they want it now. To be more accurate, they wanted it yesterday." http://www.runbkrun.com/2018/02/09/distance-is-the-key-to-unlocking-pace/
  13. Our evening runs start at 6 pm at night. With my commuting and no flexi working hours, there is no way I can make it in time. I leave work early on a Wednesday to be on time for the time trials. Normally I will only join the club runs on weekends. As per my previous response, they are very stuck in their ways. All club runs must start at the club, which means there are only 3 or 4 routes to choose from.
  14. Sounds like the normal club politics... very set in their ways... Don't like change or new ideas. Our club chairman has been with the club for 43 years. He is in his 70's and he doesn't like change. I have suggested so many changes, but it gets shot down as "it is not how it works". I love my club, but you have to sometimes bite your tongue as it is not worth getting worked up about it.
  15. Start a Komatipoort running group / club. I trained for my first Comrades all by myself. I didn't know anything about club runs etc. I enjoy running with club mates, but I do prefer at least one run a week all by myself just to refocus and to enjoy the "me" time.
  16. None that I know of. Only Sunrise Monster on the 3rd of March and the Hot Legs Run, the 4th.
  17. Thank you for explaining it to me. My concern with all the walking is I get exponentially slower the more I walk. Cramps kick in and I feel sluggish and my legs feel very heavy. Interesting article though.
  18. Has anyone read this article? http://www.coachnorrie.co.za/2018/02/04/counting-up-and-down-to-a-successful-marathon-and-ultra/ Can someone please explain to me the sub 4 plan in layman's terms?
  19. I agree we don't put enough emphasis on rest. I blame Comrades and Strava. We are so obsessed with kilometers per week that we will sacrifice a rest day just to add another 8/10/12km to our weekly total. ( and not to mention that leaderboard on Strava... ) We are just insane human beings... I never thought I had an addictive nature, I guess I was wrong.
  20. I agree, a sub 2:30 on your first 21 km is excellent. And then to feel great afterward is a bonus! Next stop 32km? I wouldn't recommend Medihelp Monster as your first 32km. I see there is a race being advertised for the 4th of March, Hot Legs Run 15km and 32km. No idea what the route looks like. https://www.entrytime.com/event-details/?EventId=5465
  21. I am ecstatic to report that I qualified for OMTOM on Saturday at the Sasol Marathon. We couldn't have asked for better weather. The first lap was nice and cool and the sun made an appearance in the last 10km of the race. My plan was to just qualify, even if I ran a personal worse. My longest run since Comrades last year was Tough One and after that my training went seriously downhill with this nausea problem. The first lap went well, we walked at two water points, the only climb we walked every second pole and we stopped at one of our club supporters at the 20km mark. We went thru halfway in 2:13. I had to really concentrate not to push too hard to control the nausea. From km 24 to 30 my wheels came off... I had to dig very deep to keep going. When we reached the 30km water point the nice downhills started and I felt better. I realized that we had an hour and a half to do 9 km... It was the best feeling in the world to realize I will make it even if I walked to the finish. We did a lot of walking... I was definitely not the distance fit. With all the walking in the second half, the nausea was under control. I even stuck to my rule of not walking in the last km... We finished in 4:42... Second worse marathon time, but I am happy. Sasol Marathon is one of my favorite marathons. It is a well-organized race and they probably have the best water points of all races. They have so much food on the road, and Creme Soda. There are lots of trees, so lots of shaded streets. If you want to run a PB marathon, Sasol is a marathon to aim for. It is also not too far to drive, so you don't have to book accommodation. Now that the stress of qualifying is out of the way it is time to concentrate on Om die Dam in less than 6 weeks time....
  22. Good grief, I think you read my mind. Just wanted to send you a PM about the running peaks. I was tasked to get prices for our club for branded peaks. How do I get my hands on one to take to my club? What does the price range look like?
  23. World Record was set last year October. I find it very upsetting when a stroller comes flying past me... https://www.runnersworld.com/general-interest/speedy-mom-smashes-world-record-for-marathon-with-a-stroller
