  6. The only advice I remember from my first OMTOM is to take the first 28km easy. It is flat and fast and you do feel like you are going too slow. If you go out too fast you will regret it in the second half. Chappies is not too bad. You start losing personality going through Houtbay at the 42km mark. There are lots of support on the route and it helps you mentally. Just keep moving. Constantia Nek is very tough. I normally try a walk / run strategy up Constantia, but you will see lots of runners just walking up Constantia Nek, don't let this discourage you. The downhill after the Constantia Nek climb really hurts due to the bad camber. Take it easy on the downhill. Luckily there are lots of trees and you have about 8kms to go. The last 2 km is a climb that breaks me every year. Hearing the announcer and the support at the end helps. Most importantly: LOOK OUT FOR THE CAT EYES!! It is really bad on the downhill after the Chappies climb... I see people fall every single year. So pay attention to the downhills.
  7. I have done it once... It is a gruesome route, but excellent training. Be careful of injuries, take it as a training run. It really hurts... especially the downhills.

  11. I can normally feel when it is time to retire my shoes. My feet get hot and I get lower back pain. If you don't feel any niggles and the sole patterns still look good then keep going with them.

  16. Our evening runs start at 6 pm at night. With my commuting and no flexi working hours, there is no way I can make it in time. I leave work early on a Wednesday to be on time for the time trials. Normally I will only join the club runs on weekends. As per my previous response, they are very stuck in their ways. All club runs must start at the club, which means there are only 3 or 4 routes to choose from.
  17. Sounds like the normal club politics... very set in their ways... Don't like change or new ideas. Our club chairman has been with the club for 43 years. He is in his 70's and he doesn't like change. I have suggested so many changes, but it gets shot down as "it is not how it works". I love my club, but you have to sometimes bite your tongue as it is not worth getting worked up about it.
  18. Start a Komatipoort running group / club. I trained for my first Comrades all by myself. I didn't know anything about club runs etc. I enjoy running with club mates, but I do prefer at least one run a week all by myself just to refocus and to enjoy the "me" time.
  19. None that I know of. Only Sunrise Monster on the 3rd of March and the Hot Legs Run, the 4th.
  20. Thank you for explaining it to me. My concern with all the walking is I get exponentially slower the more I walk. Cramps kick in and I feel sluggish and my legs feel very heavy. Interesting article though.

  22. I agree we don't put enough emphasis on rest. I blame Comrades and Strava. We are so obsessed with kilometers per week that we will sacrifice a rest day just to add another 8/10/12km to our weekly total. ( and not to mention that leaderboard on Strava... ) We are just insane human beings... I never thought I had an addictive nature, I guess I was wrong.
  23. I agree, a sub 2:30 on your first 21 km is excellent. And then to feel great afterward is a bonus! Next stop 32km? I wouldn't recommend Medihelp Monster as your first 32km.
