  1. I guess tapering is starting for the Kaapse Hoop and Soweto people. Anyone else racing this weekend? Planning a 15km tough climbing route tomorrow... weather not looking so good for tomorrow in Gauteng. Sunday will be a 4-hour ride in the Cradle, hopefully, no rain in the morning.
  2. If I remember correctly we leave at 3:15 am in Amanzimtoti with a bus. Most people sleep and eat breakfast on the bus as it is an hour's drive in a car, the bus takes longer. VERY long day... at least we are close to Durban so you get home quicker. I agree with Andrew, try and get accommodation closer to PMB for one night.
  3. Our club has been staying in Amanzimtoti for at least 20 years. Horrible accommodation but very cheap. When you are looking for accommodation these are things to take note of: 1. I like self-catering. You get up at 3 in the morning to eat and after the race, I only feel hungry late at night. 2. Don't book accommodation at a place with only stairs.... Learned this the hard way after my first Comrades. 3. Don't book accommodation in central Pietermaritzburg for the down run. Also learned this the hard way, it is very noisy and you don't get much sleep.
  4. Couldn't agree more. You can't make a decision on a R 2800 pair of shoes (Asics) in 5 minutes just because you have been running with that specific make and model for years. Sizing differs between versions. I think this is a great business opportunity for smaller running gear shops. If I had to choose between trying a shoe for one or two runs vs. shopping at Sportsmans Warehouse or even buying online I will definitely go to the smaller running shop.
  5. Only saw this today: The New Women's Half Marathon World Record: 1:04:51!There’s a new half marathon world record–and wow is it fast! On Sunday, October 22, 23-year-old Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya finished first in the Valencia Half Marathon in Valencia, Spain, one of the IAAF’s Gold Label road races, with a time of 1:04:51. The previous half marathon world record was set earlier this year at the Sportisimo Prague Half Marathon, also by Jepkosgei, with a time one second slower than her race in Spain. Most impressive of all? These were just two of Jepkosgei’s six world record-breaking times of 2017. https://tinyurl.com/y7zkkrb8
  6. 1 hour should be achievable, especially on the Down Run. I have done it in 2014 / 2015. That means you can have a two-year plan. Problem is then it will be an up run in 2019... Thank you, Andrew, for your post. Interestingly enough I had the same conversation with a complete stranger after cycling. He has a couple of silvers and he now runs "way slower" BRs. He only races his qualifier marathon. All other marathons are seen as training and at a much slower pace. I am thinking of trying the same strategy. Please keep us posted on your progress. PS. Our club had a "pub" trail run the one year. It was hosted at Hobby Park in Roodepoort. We didn't have pubs on the route but we did have "water" points. It was so much fun, unfortunately, it got too expensive to do it again at Hobby Park.(New owners)
  7. Why is trail running so expensive? Surely with road running, you need to pay JMPD/ Metro Police for marshaling and for trail running you don't need them?
  8. And don't forget about the tapering weeks.
  9. I am also not qualifying this year but I am stressing about Tough One. Running fitness levels not close to where it should be. In hindsight, I will enter a marathon in future for September/ Oct/ Nov just to keep the running motivation going. On a positive note, I survived the 110km Bestmed Satellite Classic cycling race on Saturday without feeling nauseous. I really enjoyed cycling again and I had to tell myself to take it easy and save some energy for the long road ahead. It just felt great not to feel crap and not think about bailing. The distance got to me and it didn't help that Hekpoort was in the last 10kms. Such a huge difference how you feel after a cycling race and running race... Even with little cycling training, I wasn't stiff yesterday, I feel stiff at the moment even after a 10km run... I realised on Saturday that runners are so much friendlier than cyclists at races... (Yes, I said it out loud) There were no real bunches from my group on Saturday and I ended up with one other cyclist, making turns at the front. We probably cycled together for 70km, chatting now and again. He was the only person chatting to me. When I finished I thanked him for helping me and he then told me he is a runner and he did his first 21km this year... (So, to the cyclist crazies on theHub that are regular visitors to this thread, it really helps to be friendly on the road.)
  10. Congratulations! Sub 2 on your first 21km is great. At the moment I am not even on the log... There is a worldwide Comrades group on Strava. The amount of kms the top runners do per week is insane, ranging anything from 200 to 300km. You should follow Renier Grobler... I think he did a long run (45 km) in the middle of a day at a 4:10 min/km pace... I agree completely, Strava is an excellent tool to learn from others. I also use it to compare my training to a previous year. For example what was my avg kms per week last year this time.
  11. Is it the same as the bib fix ones? If it is then it is very difficult to use it. I have only used it once.
  12. I have seen lots of supporters (even in my own club) wearing Comrades merchandise. Personally, I feel you have to earn it. Unless it clearly states supporter somewhere. My friends that bailed/didn't finish a specific year also don't wear that year's shirt. I am not to phased about the brand as long as it is cheaper than NB and the quality is better than NB. I feel sad every year when I go to the expo and see at least 80% of the runners that can clearly not afford anything from the official shop.
  13. So the time has come to start planning races for January 2018. I have done Johnson Crane for 4 years now. As per my previous posts, I don't like the race. It is way too busy and too flat. I am considering to rather do Ottosdal next year. Any comments about the race, has anyone done the cycling race in the morning? I am still contemplating if I am doing the 42 or just 21.
  14. Thanks for posting. What is the mileage like on the Brooks Ghost?
  15. I enjoyed watching him run on Sunday. He makes it looks so effortless. He has only lost one marathon in his running career! He was smiling most of the way and he even helped the novice Adola running with him, explaining the blue line to him. The commentators mentioned he is quite rich but he is very humble and he helps with most of the chores at the running training camps they have.
  16. And he doesn't have a rest day. His rest day is to only run once a day...
  17. Interesting article about Kipchoge's Berlin marathon preparation: https://tinyurl.com/ydycmaf6
  18. Congratulations dave303e! Serious respect!!
  19. I am one week into my complete liver detox (No caffeine, no alcohol, no wheat, no sugar). The weekend before the long weekend I thought I am going to die... literally. I had all the detox symptoms - body aches, headaches, fever, and after a couple of days, I had a full-blown cold. The doctor recommended no medication, no vitamins. So I went completely cold turkey. I went for a 36km ride on Sunday, lungs burning and feeling a bit dizzy, but I survived. Yesterday I went for an 8km run, lungs still not very happy with me. The good news is that I didn't feel nauseous at all! The detox is for a month.... I truly miss my coffee Now to get the fitness levels up again for Satellite Classic, 94.7 and my favorite... Tough One.
  20. For my first Comrades, I got a substitute. Only decided after OMTOM I guess I can give it a try. There will definitely be lots of entries available in the substitution period.
  21. You are absolutely right, all Comrades runners are insane (We are always looking for new members) The green number and double green number guys are a special kind of crazy. One of my club mates is super excited that from this year onwards his Comrades entries is free.... (That is for Comrades runners that completed more than 25) And all I was thinking is WTF, seriously WTF. I love my running, and I will probably run Comrades for the next 6 years, but I don't see myself getting to number 20. I will never stop running. I can see myself as that old RAC lady still running at 80 and beating 20-year-olds. I guess Comrades becomes a habit, that is just what you do on weekends from January to end of May... you train for Comrades. I truly think some people have an unhealthy obsession with it.
  22. I agree the GoGreen campaign at OMTOM was amazing this year. It is such huge bins, you cannot miss it.
  23. Unfortunately not, taking it easy with the running at the moment. Going to be a long day in the saddle for me tomorrow. I need to be cycling for at least 4 hours tomorrow. I am doing a 100km ride next weekend. Good luck to all our CT marathoners! Enjoy the beautiful Cape, take it easy tomorrow, don't spent too much money at the expo and run your hearts out on Sunday!! We want some race reports on Monday.
  24. Gerald Fox memorial 21/10 is on Sunday at Johannesburg Zoo. Not sure if you can enter on the day as it is part of the Vitality Series. http://www.runnersworld.co.za/events/gerald-fox-memorial-half-marathon-10km/ Saturday is Andrew Greyling 21/10 at Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria which will probably be less congested than the Gerald Fox memorial race.
  25. It is normally the first Saturday in February. So I guess the 3rd of Feb 2018. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
