  1. All Qualifiers in all the different provinces: You have to qualify for OMTOM by the 28th of February 2018. http://www.runnersguide.co.za/pages/calendar/qualifying_races/QualifyingRaces.aspx
  2. So sorry to hear about your bad marathon experience. Did you perhaps spray water on your legs? Were your running shoes wet? This year I also had my first ever blister at Comrades - I have never had issues with blisters. It was a blood blister underneath my foot. When I took off my shoe at half way, it was just blood everywhere, I just had to suck it up and finish. To this day I still don't know why this happened. Don't feel upset about your experience - learn from it. You don't know what can happen on the day.
  3. Quite the opposite in Gauteng at the moment. 35 degrees in Pretoria today
  4. I have entered. I have a love-hate relationship with ODD. I think clockwise might be easier?
  5. I knew that the word bum is going to cause a stir... To be honest, I have never paid any attention to bums around me. I guess I have a game plan then for Tough One
  6. I guess the entry fee is motivation enough to make time to train.
  7. I had a very funny conversation this morning with a colleague of mine. We were (obviously) talking about running and how his training is going. He then mentions something so funny, I couldn't stop laughing. One of his friends counts "big bums" at races when he is running to distract himself. (I have no idea what he classifies as a big bum) Is there anything you count/do at races to distract yourself? I normally break it down into water points or certain landmarks.
  8. The plan was 70.3 in 2019. I am postponing it to 2020. I also found a swimming coach in Fourways, obviously, I can swim, but swimming in open water is a different story. My biggest obstacle at the moment is time. I still don't know how some people do it with a full-time job etc. I will have to cut down on my working hours, that is going to be an interesting discussion with the bosses...
  9. I see Om Die Dam entries are open. I also heard a rumor that it will be in reverse next year, not sure how true this is. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  10. I also eat what I normally eat before any run. I eat a little bit of cooked oats 2 hours before the start. I tried mieliepap before but it just feels too heavy in my stomach. If it is a marathon I eat a racefood every hour. (30g of carbs every hour) I don't like sweet things so if I really hit a wall I have some diluted coke or half a cup of coke and half a hammer gel (This is in case of emergency). Gels seem to upset my stomach. At Comrades I will eat potatoes on the road at the potato stations. I drink hydrochoice (rehydrate) every 15kms. A friend of my said she is experimenting with adding plain salt to her water when cycling. It seems to help her with cramping on the bike. I tried it on Sunday, I only added a quarter of a teaspoon to my water and it helped. I am thinking of giving it a try while running as well.
  11. I feel for you Jackes... with everyone qualifying around you I am sure you feel pressured to do it asap. I feel the same about it, even if I am not injured or struggling with ITB. I am only doing my qualifier in the new year, as I am not nearly fit enough to run a marathon now. What if you do more damage now and still not qualify? What is the furthest you have run lately? Will you be able to run with the pain for 42kms? Have you done enough training to complete a marathon? I am sure you have more than enough questions going thru your mind right now. This is a difficult decision It doesn't sound like a good plan to me to have a big bang approach.
  12. A beer or two will help with this... and it is good carbo loading!
  13. Good luck to everyone doing qualifiers this weekend, hope all goes according to plan.
  14. Mine also looks the same. I emailed them today as some of my club mates' entries says completed and they also have club info and qualifying information missing. I will let you know if I get a response. I must say the whole payment side is cumbersome. I helped 4 (educated) mates to enter. Not very user-friendly. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
  15. This year's size was way off... I normally wear a small and for some reason, I ordered a medium at this year's OMTOM. The medium is smaller than my normal small Comrades and previous OMTOM shirts... There were lots of complaints at the expo this year. I seriously hope they get it right, oh and without any spelling mistakes...
  16. I agree, with you. Usually, the first couple of kilometers are like an obstacle course to get passed the prams and walkers. If they want to change the rule to "Gun to mat" then race organizers should apply certain rules. For example, walkers to start 10 / 15 min later. Maybe also split 21 and 42 runners? That means the start will be less congested. At Johnson Crane they have starting blocks for the different times you are aiming for. I agree with the decision but they should have made suggestions to the different race organizers on how to manage this change.
  17. Found this article: https://www.drdavidgeier.com/antibiotics-concerns-athletes/
  18. I like staying in Blouberg, it is beautiful and about 25 min from the start.
  19. Thanks for this, I am so frustrated not being able to train while on antibiotics.. I almost convinced myself to run today. You convinced me otherwise.
  20. No marathons for me too. Doing 94.7 and Tough One this year. Down with tonsillitis at the moment, another set of antibiotics... So feeling very sorry for myself at the moment. Good luck to all of you doing your qualifiers this weekend. Hope it all goes according to plan. We want some race reports on Monday as I am in serious need of motivation!
  21. Good luck for Sunday, sub 4 at Soweto is excellent. Keep us posted.
  22. Has anyone done the double marathons?
  23. Tough One is shorter... so you can't really compare the two. Tough One is exactly that, tough. The first half is quite undulating and the second half is pure torture. Tough One is 520m of climbing and the race only starts at 15km in. I see Tough One as a training run, take it easy and enjoy the end of year vibe. Link to my 2015 Tough One: (missed it last year due to antibiotics, ended up supporting my club mates on the road.... I will never do that again) https://www.strava.com/activities/437464431 I have only done one Soweto marathon way back in 2014. I didn't enjoy it at all. Soweto has an elevation of 459m and the last 13km is climbing all the way. So if you want to compare elevation then Tough One is more climbing over a shorter distance than Soweto.
  24. Can't wait!! I am looking forward to it.
  25. Sorry to hear that Gemmerkat, life doesn't always go as planned. Hopefully, you will be back in 2019? Advertise your Tough One entry on the Comrades FB page. If you advertise early in January I am sure your Johnsons and Dischem entries will be snatched up quickly. For Comrades, you will have to wait until the substitution period opens, I think it is in April.
