Ya, I must admit, 3x10 gives you everything you want. I think this XX1 is a much better idea than 2 x 10 though. Hate changing front ring all the time.

Pretty flippin deep teeth on that front ring. You don't want to brush with that thing.

I think this setup is more flexible than most people think. But it's going to cost over R13000 to switch. That's excluding the hub conversion. Steep.

Sorry man, maybe I'm just doff, but you only need one bad blade to suck a worn chain.

Its amazing the gearing choice that XX1 gives you. If you take a 3x10 Shimano setup with 24 - 32 - 42 in front and 11 - 36 at the back. The gear ratio for granny (24 in front and 36 at the back) is 1.52. The ratio for big ring (42 in front and 11 at the back) is 8.72. An XX1 setup is 1.71 in granny and 7.31 in big ring. This is like losing one gear either side of your 30 speed setup because one down from a 3 x 10 granny is 1.71 (almost exactly what XX1 is) and 7.38 is one down from big ring in 3 x 10 (almost exactly what XX1 is).

    Why no chain suck?
  8. Yes, I have to say, after being infuriated with my 35, and being very resentful at having to be a software testing guinea pig, I am now at the point where the firmware actually seems to work. It did take over a year, but my unit now does what it said it's supposed to do on the box when I bought it.
  9. Ya, not the next big thing. Just guys that appreciate an exceptional bike. Ride what you want.
  10. EMBA? Why don't you just stick to the road? My be safer too. I too have an EMBA board. Not so useful that one. No riding on your own, no riding abreast, no riding before 6:30, no riding after 5, no single track, no mean hills, no EMBA board, no problem. Just go to Holla.
  11. Holla is the best place to train if you're into any race over 50 Kay's. Some routes get sandy, but there are a lot of trails here, and they're all different. It's no Karkloof, but try belting out a 60 at Giba without looping or getting stuck behind plonkers. If you wanna grind out a bit of distance, with a some lovely forest track thrown in, go to Holla. Yellow gets very swampy when it's wet and sandy when it's dry, but there are three visions of the black that are pretty reliable. Red is great, maroon too.

I'm butting in here - searched this topic because I've had unbelievable pain in my right wrist. Been building up over the course of a few months, and now it's unbearable. Will these things help me? I like the look of the slimmer design above, is it the GE1? Or should I go the full "lollipop"?
  13. If I had the bucks I'd buy a set of Mavic Crossmax wheels.
  14. If you have a hardtail pressure becomes much more important. I run the front just hard enough so it doesn't wash out sideways, probably about 1.7. The back a touch more. I'm 83kgs.
  15. I cannot help but chuckle.
  16. I've had a 30 for over a year. You soon understand that Bryton uses it's clients as software guinea pigs. We're always waiting for the next firmware upgrade in the hope that some promised feature will actually work. I've given up on the navigation, and I'm using mine as a glorified bike computer. The only good thing about these units is the battery life.
  17. When people refer to a "short" stem for a Pyga, what is short? I have a 90, and while I'm always up to try something different, I can't find too many stems shorter than 80. What are others using and why..?
  18. When are you coming to Durban with that 650B thing?
  19. Can you oaks actually find your way following a track on a Bryton? I find it very tough to work out where it wants you to go. Almost like I want to zoom in all the time...
  20. No, I'm still under the weather. That route will be pretty gnarly with all the washaways. I did it once and the bike took a hiding. Lots of trash, pieces of metal, thick sand etc on the outskirts of Durban.
  21. Yes Spar, that was me. We did OK. I still had the flu (at least that's my excuse...) We came 32nd but I struggled a bit. My doctor kakked me out yesterday.
  22. I was on the Zero. We were are the ferry together on the first day.
  23. Hey Ryan, are you the green Oh that passed me on Berg & Bush?
  24. Does anyone know if the proposed 650 Pyga is the same frame as the 29'r? Or will it be new geometry?
