  1. He did not mean the B group start pen, but rather circle "B" as labeled on this map: https://s3.amazonaws.com/pmb-musics/Telkom_947_Cycle_Challenge/cc_venue_parking_21Sept16+copy.pdf Sound plan. I just recommend that you meet off the road.
  2. Wow! For those interested in the study mentioned, here it is: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1440244006001393
  3. Seeding was done by Racetec. (PPA seeding also done by Racetec.) seeding.cyclechallenge.co.za and results.pedalpower.org.za dns records both point at the same racetec server. Name: results.racetec.co.za Address: 197.96.19.17 So for a bit of fun, you can see your cycle challenge seeding on the ppa site: results.pedalpower.org.za/findme.aspx?ss=5 and you can see your ppa seeding on the cycle challenge site: seeding.cyclechallenge.co.za/findme.aspx?ss=1 Important to note however that while the data comes from the same database, they use different selection of results (PPA uses all racetec results, while cycle challenge is only a few of my racetec results) and different penalties for old results (e.g. for last years cycle challenge, PPA's penalty is 7, and for cycle challenge it is 0.) Also to be noted: as per their about page, Cycle Events is a division of Racetec.
  4. I don't think that would work. It's it takes a bit of effort, but it's easy to provide fictitious data.
  5. That's normal. You started after him, so he just got dropped, badly. But when you see someone from a group that starts after your group, and you're not going slow, then there is something fishy. Eg. If the VA group passes a lone VC rider.
  6. Suddenly I feel guilty stoking the speculation

  8. Patchelicious and geraldm24 - I admire your willingness to help others out, but TBH, I can't see this ever working for a group that rides together for the first time at a big race like 94.7 - last years "I Group" a good example. Guys - if you want to learn to ride effectively in a group, join a club. I've heard Germiston Wheelers is really good. If they are too far from where you live, there are lots of other good ones. A good club will have experienced riders who will be able to teach you what you need to know. I learnt so much when I road with my first club.

  13. What group you in? I'm riding with a friend who is riding for the first time from NN.
  14. Google has good aerials after the track layout change: https://www.google.co.za/maps/@-25.9960563,28.0738737,423m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en No idea were we will go though.
  15. Here is a spreadsheet to share your start groups: Anyone can edit it. Simply type you name in a free cell on the row for your start group. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SGJldM3M-jA2oMGFZte4eCXmT_IsIOrwGXAlonzYdcA/edit?usp=sharing
  16. "Cyclists have a right to claim the lane" So I agree that this should be the case. But question: where do we stand with this from a legal point of view? As far as I am aware, there is nothing that specifically states this in the road traffic act. Is there case precedent for this?

Guys and Girls, can I recommend that you consider joining a cycling club if you haven't already. Many benefits, but the most important is you will improve your group riding skills. There many in the Jo'burg area.

So if you are going to do pacelines rather than rolling turns, there is one tip that I can make to make things work more smoothly: (This only applies to pacelines because if you are doing rolling turns it's not possible to get it wrong) You want to have the person who has just taken a turn to move off and back, rather than the person who is going to take a turn to move to the front from the middle or back of the group. This helps keeps the speed more constant. When you have the person who has just taken a turn to move off and back then it is really easy for the person who was on 2nd wheel now taking the lead to simply maintain the speed. But when you have the person who is going to take a turn to move to the front, that person first has to accelerate to move to the front, then they need to slow down to match the speed of the group. Doing this is very tricky. What typically happens is this person does not slow down, and everyone else has to also accelerate to match them. So how does the group make sure this happens in the right way: If you are sitting in the bunch, and you think the people at the front of the group have been there too long, and you are itching to take a turn, don't accelerate to move to the front, rather shout a loud "CHANGE", so that the people at the front know it's time. If you are sitting further back in the group, you just need to wait for your turn. If you find your self at 2nd wheel, and the person on the front has taken their turn, and moves over, or gives you the elbow wave, then you must roll through to the front. If you are tired then just take a short turn (or very short turn) but you must roll through. If you don't, then someone else from further back in the group has to then move up in front, and you have up set the cart. Cue accelerations. (Hope this is all clear....)

So in those are rolling turns. You can also do a paceline which is sightly different. (Some of this is blatantly copied from http://cyclingtips.com.au/2009/02/rolling-turns-pacelining-echeloning/) Rolling turn his is when you smoothly rotate through riders taking turns at the front. The rider on the front will not be there for more than a few seconds before the next rider smoothly rolls through and pulls off in front of the guy he just passed. Once the rider rolling through pulls in front of the lead rider, he is now the lead rider and should back off the pace slightly so that the next rider pulling through can come around. Paceline This is when the rider at front will stay there for an extended period and then will then pull off and drift back in the group while the next rider will do the same. Single Double So as far as I know, rolling turns are a little more difficult to organise. I've found that a paceline is easier to get a group to execute. It's also easier for some people to do more, and other to do less with a paceline. Anyway, I'm not in the group, so my opinion does not count. But best to deiced before hand which you are going to do, so that it is clear to everyone.

I did a comparison of the 2012 and 2013 results to the 2014 results. Times were typically 10min slower on the new route.

I did a sub 3 (2:58:32) but I was fast in the first half, and slow in the second. Probably not what you want, but let me know if you want it anyway.
