  1. The rules are very clear that you need to go and get the card extended at one of their offices - they even sound like they've made this process very simple (I renew in December every year so haven't done it myself). The rangers shouldn't have any discretion on this - no valid permit, no entry. If someone gets difficult about it and can't understand such simple logic then I feel their paintball guns could be put to good use to get rid of you. Just to be clear - this isn't directed at you but rather your comment about the people with expired permits.
  2. I was wondering the same thing this morning around the Constantia area and the response on this thread highlights the problem - they (we?) are clearly just too superior/special. I passed 2 groups of >10 adult riders together in Constantia and many groups between 4 and 10 riders - generally none wearing a mask, 2 or 3 abreast across the road (I had to shout at 1 of these to move out of the way of the car stuck behind them) and mostly riding at <12kph chatting to each other (I was running and passed many of them up hills hence I have an idea of the speed). If you want to be social then invite your friends to your house for a braai. It's just as legal as riding in a group but it doesn't affect those of us who are wearing masks and trying to train on our own. If you don't care about the rules that's your decision but stop making it everyone else's problem too.
  3. Guessing you weren't meant to notice that
  4. I recently inherited a set of tools probably from the '30s/40's - Stanley Bailey plane; 2 Henry Disston saws; Marples chisels; levels/squares/hand drills/scrapers etc. Most of that is relatively meaningless to me but I've consulted with Dr Google on a lot of it and none of it is hugely fancy but all pretty good stuff. Is there someone you could recommend in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town I could take it to for some more info on it and possibly help with restoring the tools to full working condition (all in very good condition but edges are a bit dull mainly)? ...sadly I don't have the time, patience or skill to restore them myself
  5. After reading through the thread, this really has to be the knob of the year... Wtf does his race have to do with anything??? You are the only person who is concerned about the race of the people involved. For everyone else, you very possibly are correct but something happened to spark off a physical altercation and I don't think we know what that is yet... There is a chance (probably quite remote) that he actually threw the first punch and they needed to subdue him in which case the response could be justified by an untrained official who doesn't really know how to deal with a situation like that. Let them gather the facts and then crucify the ranger if your guesses are correct (I'm well aware the video gives some damning facts but it does not include all of them).
  6. Why don't you put together a cycling "CV" with a motivation of what you are trying to achieve and send that out to a few hundred companies to try and find someone who might support you on a more sustainable basis and who would also assist you in getting the right publicity? You cycle amazing distances/challenges but from what you have posted you don't get very much support relative to the effort. There are people who would do one of your rides and raise a fortune through exploiting the right connections/channels - if you just get a few bigger companies supporting you there is no reason you couldn't do the same.
  7. When it comes to insurance, everyone is clambering for their money so there is always a conflict (insurers don't ask for discounts and are often even willing to pay a premium as they work through assessors who are also conflicted). It's a very messy industry... In this case you probably don't have any legal claim but get them to confirm in writing that if the frame is not restored to it's original condition after the repair then they must replace it. If it is restored to original condition by an "expert" then there isn't much to argue. Alternatively take the cash cost of the repair and pay in to buy a new frame.
  8. Are you sponsored or did you buy the bike voluntarily? It's great you're doing so well but that is an essential point to clarify for your review.
  9. Thanks for the response... Just to clarify - I'm not knocking anything, you guys put on an awesome series of events and I will definitely be back again next year. If my response is not taken as intended as some constructive criticism/feedback from a regular rider then I guess I have to apologise. People seem to be very insulted and defensive about it. I have made it clear I am not qualified on any of this stuff but it just "feels" like there might be a better alternative out there at a reasonable price (I'm perfectly happy to be wrong about this!). You guys should be taking some money home for carrying the effort/risk of organising it so that is a separate problem.
  10. I thought entries were R400 (discounted if you prepaid for all 3 events as I did)? I don't care about my times at all but just surprised that the tech isn't a little bit better - as this is the first year it has really taken off I wouldn't have expected money to be spent in 2019 but it's more a thought going forwards into 2020 and beyond. Once again - limited sponsors this year makes sense but they should be able to get a series sponsor for 2020+ who is willing to part with some money to improve the events based on the success this year (and riders are clearly spending some real money on bikes and equipment now!). Don't get me wrong, I fully understand the issues that exist and I loved the events this year, but I don't know the cost of timing equipment or what options are available. I also strongly believe in continuous improvement once you have some success and this is an area that could be improved.
  11. Thanks - that's a lot more than I would have expected it to cost and I definitely agree that isn't practical. I wonder where the systems used by the XC events come from and if they couldn't be rented for these events if they work for this type of special stage timing. I don't really agree the existing system works well (by 2019 tech standards) but it does work which is priority number 1.
  12. Would be interested to know the costs involved... This event should have generated R100k+ in entry fees (before sponsors/exhibitors etc) so there is a fair amount of cash involved. The organisers need to make some money but I'm sure some money could be set aside to finance better equipment over a couple of years? The timing works within reason but it is a little outdated tech and when there are only a few seconds between the top positions the timing matters.
  13. I could be wrong but I think you're referring to a section that was completely bypassed in the enduro (last year at least) - there was a flat run that didn't go near the "jump line". The jump is on the far right of the picture at about 2m19 in the video
  14. It's actually so nice watching a good POV run without all the OTT whooping and high fives...
  15. Guessing it's Chris Nixon so definitely a good pov to learn from...
  16. For those of you that need some inspiration to stay on your bike and to keep moving at the enduro, this little guy was lying right across the trail as we came around a corner yesterday... Took a couple of minutes before he allowed us past.
  17. Time for a recce I think - need to decide if I'm actually riding it this year. I had more than 1 intimate moment with the rocks on Plumber last year which put me out of riding for a few weeks so definitely a little wary of going back there again.
  18. Have a look at the TRP Quadiem for good value with good stopping power - not the lightest or most subtle looking but they work.
  19. I agree... unless you're aiming for 1.15 in which case it is absolutely useless. But I haven't watched the video (don't know if I can handle it) so no idea what the full story is.
  20. I think you might have acted a little quickly in your initial response and now you're making up stories to justify it You're now bordering on accusing him of fraud because his pictures of his bike don't match his use of the word "mint"...
  21. Sorry to defend him on this one but why do you not think that is his device in the pic? He says it is new and shows a pic of a unit still sealed in the plastic - makes sense to me...
  22. Hubbers must be taking the p155 now after this thread - https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/370063-fuji-sst-20-barely-used/ "Barely used", "basically new" - Done around 2000km, back wheel bent beyond repair, don't know the size...
  23. Leave the poor Land Rover drivers alone... The Disco 3 & 4 were great cars for about 12 months - after that you hold them together with duct tape, cable ties and your overdraft. To be honest I'm more concerned about his "interest" in Jacob Zuma than the views on Toyota.
  24. Ouch - poor Dyllan hasn't logged in again since you posted this!
  25. Interesting to see that based on those stats (assuming it represents all riders/bikes there) at least 15 people with forks don't have brakes (or have 2 forks) Feel like I spent far too much time trying to work that out but the one at a minimum of 0.82% and the other at 0.93% (presumably a single bike from the sample) bothered me.
