  2. Thanks TW. I read the thread and the linked news stories and they both have very little detail. At least I know who the cyclists were. Didn't know them but condolences to friends and family. RIP fellow cyclists.
  3. I heard this shocking news on the radio this morning. I don't have any of the details and hoping the Alberton group can fill in the blanks. What happened and who was killed in the crash? Wishing y'all a good 2012.

    Bike to work

Err, seeing that I do this all the time can I use the car instead on 07 September? Oh crud, the date is in the past . Cool idea though. It will force cyclists to ride single file. Something they seem unable to do these days. (It's not possible to do the "group gang bang thing" when the traffic is stop and go and a bike goes faster than the traffic flow.)
  5. Two words. Dumbass moron.
  6. Christie, this would work in a world where one person is considerate of another person for any reason and not just safety. Unfortunately, the world I once knew where one stopped to help someone who had broken down, or just to help someone in need appears to have disappeared over time. These days, everyone is out to get whatever they can out of anyone else and generally speaking don't care a rat's bum about anyone but themselves. It's going to be a monumental task to ask someone who has regard for the law of the road to have any form of respect for someone else. That's just my perception anyway. So, we have to look out for ourselves in this new improved SA. As a cyclist, I try to be aware of cyclists and motor cyclists when I drive. It costs me nothing and it appears that most people have forgotten that courtesy and friendliness don't have price tags. Until the general road use attitude changes,I'm afraid that no matter how right we are, that won't change the scientific facts that in a collision, we will always come second in a two horse race. Everyone whines about the taxis and generally, they are a law unto themselves, but as a commuter, I have found them to be far more tolerant and polite to me as a cyclist than anyone else on the road. (I actually see a poll here.)
  7. I can't help but think that despite all the accidents involving cars and cyclists that we still pay lip service to our own safety a lot of the time. Wendell, I ride that route often and I must say that the bunches seldom stop at the traffic lights on Swartkoppies, ride sometimes more than two abreast on the Allewayspoort road and generally lack any meaningful commitment to road rules and own personal safety. This by no means gives anyone the right to run us over as has been threatened on other threads, and by no stretch of the imagination makes us all wrong. It saddens me that we lose so many cyclists to road accidents and we are not always the ones at fault. But we have to remember that in any collision with a motorised vehicle, that we the cyclists are the most vulnerable to injury and death. RIP departed comrade of the cycling fraternity, courage to the family in their time of grief and full and speedy recovery to the injured fellow cyclist.
  8. Eish Chaunce. Bad news indeed. It really sucks. Hope you still had a fair birthday in spite of the affirmative shopping. Good luck getting the police to do anything at all. Last year, I had my trailer with all my camping gear shopped in much the same way and the cops took my statement, gave me a case number and nothing else.
  9. Ok, on a more serious note here. I gave up a lot of nookie to go cycling with the buddies, spent hours in the garage afterwards pampering my ride and then other hours having recovery naps. Needless to say, the IDT got largely ignored and one day asked why I rode the bike so much. My honest and cynical answer at the time was :"Bike never has a headache or says 'I'm not in the mood'." I am now divorced. I can ride whenever I want, for as long as I want and with whom I want. Looking back, I would do it all differently if given the chance to do it all again. But then again, we always see things more clearly in hindsight.
  10. Easy choice for a roadie.
  11. Frequently. I will only toss a tube when it is utterly irrepairable.
  12. Mav, just a word of warning on riding in the Alberton Area. There have been incidents of bike jacking especially closer to Thokoza and on the Rand Water road. Please make sure you ride with someone when riding these areas.
  13. What they said. I LIKE.
  14. Buncha dumbasses. Seriously, I cannot understand the mentality of some security peeps. The shopping centre in Melville that didn't want to let me take my bike with me eventually ended up with me taking security guards name photograph, autograph shoe size, paw print etc when he said he would look after the bike for me. Our local P n P is bike friendly. They are quite happy for me to park the bike in the shop (just inside the door) and when I do, the owner keeps a beady eye on it for me. I like that.
  15. I am appalled at the security in the building I work in. They were very hostile towards my bike this morning when I cycled to work. So they are not bike friendly. Also noticed that certain shopping centers are hostile towrds bikes. Centro city in Rosettenville, the shopping center opposite RAU and Clearwater mall. They are fine with bikes as long as you leave them outside but then who is going to leave their pride and joy outside and alone at risk of being redistrbuted? Who of you have had similar experineces? Where are the bike hostile and bike freindly places?
  16. What size is the video in Mb. I have filtered internet.
  17. More info please peeps, I clearly need some happy pills. Do prozac work? I know I like whacky twacky, but like I haven't had any for a long time and it hammers my chest so much I can't ride my bike for a month. A legal viable alternative would be good. While on the subject, I do find a good long hard ride sorts out a lot of issues for me. I vaguely recall that morhine was good for me just over a year ago when I had a little lie down.

    Road Hogs

The thing that comes to mind mostly here is this: These dumbass cyclists are being completely inconsiderate and taking up the entire left hand ane for no good reason. But then the chops get home, shower, change and then become inconsiderate motorists. For surely an idjit reamins an idjit no matter what vehicle it is in control of. The other thing is that there is a general lack of respect for the rule of law these days. By most people. And we try and justify poor behaviour by saying "well everyone else does something wrong so what's the big deal if I ride 3, 4 or 5 abreast with my cycling buddies" Or"Why should I stop at stop streets / traffic lights because taxi drivers do sh!tloads of stuff wrong." It's all about attitude and self respect. Maybe we all need to have a bit of an attitude adjustment. Motorists and cyclists alike. None of us own the road and we both have a right to use it unless otherwise specified by road sign or by law. As such, we all have a responsibility to be considerate road users. On both sides of the fence. So let's all grow up, stop being such dumbasses and be a little more considerate of each other. That means stop bitching (motorist) and ride your frikking bikes (cyclists) in single file, or at least not occupying the whole damn road. FFS, is this so difficult to understand. Oh and please motorist, let's not get into threats of running us over. It does tend to get us a little worked up and virtualy guarantees the wrong sort of knee jerk reaction. Daloco, if you look at the second picture, you will see that close to the point of overtaking, there is a barrier line approaching. IIRC, it is illegal to begin an overtaking manouvre when the arrows show that a barrier line is imminent. So your point has no value. Just my opinion. The whole 5 Zim dollars worth.

You ever try and do anything and laugh at the same time?? I can't even walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. Laughung and riding a bike will be a serious challenge not to mention twoing that fat tyred lumbering hunk of metal uphill, with you on it. Do Humber make a tandem? We should enter a tandem Humber dude. AS long as I can be the stoker so I can hide behind you.

So technically, there are three. A very horny bike I might say. Freakaziod dude, you are seriaaaaasly faulty. Oxman turned delivery boy post man. Sub 4 on that should be doable, just. If you can drag it's weight up the Parktown ridge. TWICE. I think I need to eneter this race and ride next to you. On second thoughts, I think not. I will fall off my bike laughing at you.

    Cycling to work

I was at some stage commuting 30km one way in the Am and then a similar distance home again. Did not hsave a shower at work so used to ride in easy and then hammer down on the way home. Used loads of deo, but I always wear lycra when commuting. Change of clothes at the office and used to leave a pair of shoes there. Also save heaps on petrol and parking but probably the biggest saving of all is the rest of the car, notably exhaust systems. On a short drive you get water buold up in the exhaust system and then it rusts away, needing replacement far more often than if you travel long distances. Oh, and I found taxi drivers very polite on the whole. Far more so than women drivers.
  23. I agree. The more attractive you make it to others, the higher the probability that someone will make the choice of relieving you of it. This is Africa.
  24. The kind that will spend hours driving around doing it because he cannot wait a few minutes driving (and being held up) behind dumbass cyclists who ride two and three abreast and hold up the traffic on a Saturday and Sunday morning. The kind of cyclist shwo think they own the road. And then get into trouble with dumbass motorists who think they own the road. Yes, this has been going on for ages. Why we can't resolve this is anyones guess. Perhaps there are too many with the incorrect attitude.
  25. 'Bout ten years back, I had "tennis" elbow that just didn't want to quit (and I wasn't even playing tennis then (or doing any woodwork for that matter)). Went to the doc and got a cortisone jab in the elbow and two weeks later it was gone. Never been back since. The thing is sports injuries occur for a reason and bascially your body is telling you to slow down. Sometimes you do need to listen to it.
