  1. If the cut is large, using a tube only may start to bulge - I remember this well from my high school days and general lack of money. You can however reinforce the cut with either a custom boot (see above), or an old piece of tube, cut to size and glued on the inside. If your rims are for Presta valves only, then your tube needs to be Presta, the schraeder type wont fit in unless you want to drill the holes larger. All in all, buy another tubeless tyre - it really is the best solution and the only one you will have any real confidence in.
  2. From Fratelli's to Emmarentia there were so many people on the spruit last weekend that the danger is getting runover by speedfreaks, or hopping over the bodies of noobs who fell down for no apparent reason. From the William Nic down to 12th Avenue Rivonia its definitely quieter, and maybe a lone girl should do a road detour at the PnP and hop back onto the trail at the DHL building. That way you avoid the multiple homeless camp sites. From DHL northwards there are also quite a few trail runners, walkers and dog walkers still, who also give you company. From 12th ave Rivonia to Witkoppen its normally very quiet, and I always prepare mentally for what trolls I might find under the highway bridge. So pick your area to suit your personal security comfort zone. But to tell the truth, in 3 years of solo spruit riding I only once thought someone was looking rather shifty, let alone had any security incidents.
  3. Someone who is vouching for a gardener in Midrand/ Centurion on the AudioVisual forum I frequent. May be worth following up, let me know if you need me to act as a PM'er on that forum to get details. http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,13681.0.html
  4. I only use tubeless mtb tyres running with Stans sealant, so can't comment on road bikes. Today, 25 km from home, I pulled out a huge bougainvilleae (sp?) thorn about 4mm in diameter from my back wheel. I lost a lot of air, but after about 500m and two sets of pumping it had sealed up fine- although I was worried.... That is the biggest thorn I've yet had. So far after going tubeless & sealant I have never had to fix a puncture. I gather that longer cuts from glass are normally an issue though.
  5. I take my hat off to those souls first, and then for you for taking such a good and moving photo.
  6. Sometimes, unsubtle means are required to get things moving !
  7. KZN - Hibberdene from last week, mostly at sunrise. I really need a long fast lens for the dolphins (saw whales twice but they were even further out from the shore. A telescope would be needed for those).
  8. I have a set of these pedals which I quite enjoy. You do however need SPD shoes with a decent rubber component (and a small amount of flex) to the sole to have any form of solid connection to the flat side for tricky terrain (I have the MT-42). If you have a high end shoe which is ultra stiff with only a nylon? component to the sole, this combination will probably be deadly as your feet will slip and slide everywhere on the flat component.
  9. Looks like a nice carry camera, DPreview also have good things to say about it in their previews - interesting take on the sensor. However, I have vowed never to give Fuji another cent after buying one of their cheap weatherproof compacts - its sensor, lens and autofocus combination are shockingly poor, it takes pictures at 2005 cellphone level quality. And the noise at an ISO higher than 400 is terrible. And seeing as though I bought it in 2009 thats unacceptable. Rant off - keep up the supply of good pics guys - even if I have not had anything to contribute lately I still follow the thread.
  10. I have also bought stuff of them from the hub, no problems and still going strong.
  11. Thanks kamikaze, that looked very fresh. I did try and ride it. However my brain was writing cheques my skills could not cash. I needed a bit more speed, so my chainring caught, and that was the end of that. I lost my bar end somewhere around there as a result of that fall, too embarassed to start a LOST thread.... I did notice no-one tried to ride it when I was there apart from myself.. I did find someone's Black Diamond collpsing walking pole (single) in the bush nearby whilst looking for the bar end. Seeing as the world of mtb and adventure hiking probably don't meet on theHubsa, I just extended it and placed upright against a manhole, so if the owner comes by it will be visible. My little bit to assist.
  12. +1 from me. Just don't get side-tracked on their website, they have even more goodies than CRC
  13. Presumably the lbs. Builders Whorehouse will have, but they never have stock of the little tubes, only the 500ml jars - which will take me approx. 12 500 years to use up at my consumption rates.
  14. My Avids were always terribly noisy. In trying to find out why I came across the infamous Turkey-gobbling thread on mtbr.com. That was how the OP described the noise, and the term stuck for 20 odd pages. I never succeeded in quieting them down, so went for Clarks Skeletals, they make just the same noise, stop me in just the same time, but cost 1/3 of the price.
  15. Pretty sure my last crankset instruction (Truvativ) specified some grease.
  16. So you're the &%#$@ who takes the office cutlery. And you incite others to steal as well. Have you no shame...... On a more serious note, I have heard of companies that drill a small hole through the bowl portion of office kitchen tea spoons so that they still work, but don't get nicked.
  17. Me: I like the motion blur of the drumsticks. That pic gets my vote...
  18. By loosen, he means very loose. I shattered my star nut thats holds everything together 2 weeks ago because what I thought was finger loose on those 2 bolts was still too tight. Shattering the internal star nut changes this from a 2 minute operation to 2 hours, excluding the time taken to get a new nut.
  19. Yep, old tubes are the business, they hold both magiclight and DIY special in place nicely.
  20. Going back to the OP question, I replaced my OEM Juicy 3's with the Clarks skeletal. The price difference at the time between these and more recognised brands was more distinct than current. They are at least as good as the J3's, easier to adjust and matching parts, rotors etc are a lot cheaper than the equivalent Avid stuff.
  21. Its "A" spruit Jim, but not as we know it. The Sandspruit before it meets up with the Braamfontein spruit. I gather that the council and/or Surveyor-General messed up many, many years back and subdivided the old farms into plots of land that went right up to the middle of the river - so the individual plot owners own the river banks. In this section the owners, mainly complexes, have really taken ownership to heart by landscaping gardens, putting in jungle gyms for the kids, braai facilities, the works. Downside is you can never have public access for say a new cycling or hiking trail along here as it is private property. Hearsay is the council did try and rectify the mistake, but no-one was keen on giving land back after their purchase.
  22. Some pics of a haven of tranquillity within the hustle & bustle of Joburg city limits. Box of smarties to whoever can guess where this is. I did notice that the sunshine is becoming harsh again, spring is coming.
  23. Maybe the first step is to post this message under Tech Q&A, or Engineering sub-forum in Chit-Chat, as it may not get much attention under Training & Nutrition. Not many calories in a floating bridge, tho' I have expended many retrieving myself from out of the water when things went wrong.
  24. My Park Tool PCS 9 arrived 2 weeks ago, and I am lovin' it. Over-engineered like crazy, I reckon you could hang an elephant off it (OK, so I exaggerate for effect). I felt no need to go one model up, but maybe it's worth it ?
  25. Good question that Topwine 2008 projections for the US fed, the latest easily findable by me,in USD 1,146 billion - individual income taxes 275 billion - corporate income taxes 906 billion - social security taxes 81 billion - excise taxes 25 billion - estate and gift taxes 25 billion - customs duties 47 billion - miscellaneous receipts TOTAL - 2,506 billion What may skew these numbers is that these are federal taxes, the individual states also charge various taxes etc. to companies and persons in addition to these. However, bottom line is that income taxes in both normal and social security forms comprises 82% of their tax receipts. Does seem a bit high. I gather that for SA, the split is about 33% in income tax, 33% is business tax, the rest is VAT, Fuel levies etc. combined. Don't quote me though..
