  1. 1 Day Flu Cure... It does exactly what it says on the box. No prescription or doctor needed and you can buy it at Pick 'n Pay for something like R30 Looks like this: Be warned though... It tastes like a mixture between clean alcohol and those fire ball sweets we used to get when we were kids. Works like a bomb though
  2. You've told non-cyclists to apply rule #5
  3. You go hiking (mountain biking without the bike) and spot the best line on every piece of track.
  4. When I was stuck up in Lephalale I went to D'Nyala a few times but never left the "tourist route". Probably the most boring 30km of dirt road I've ridden. Pretty bleak I didn't do more exploring now.
  5. I feel like one of the only things that everyone agrees on on the hub is that inbreds are awesome to ride. I've never read a bad thing about them. If you use a QR hub, do you need tugs on both sides? If you have a bolt on hub, how do you take your wheel off if you have a mechanical out on a trail somewhere? Do you have to carry a spanner around with you?
  6. Where did you get the paragon sliders? How much?
  7. I know this topic has been talked to death on a load of other freds, but I can't seem to find a consensus about what the most hassle free way is to tension a SS chain. It seems like every method has a problem. - Horizontal dropouts need chain tugs which make it a bugger to remove a wheel, and can also mean that you need to adjust the brake caliper position. You also can't use QR if you don't have tugs - EBB are sometimes noisy or wear out, and might mean you need to adjust your saddle height every time you tension your chain - Spring loaded tensioners add minor amounts of friction, and also detract from the clean aesthetics of a SS. They also aren't fool proof and can cause issues if not properly aligned. - Eccentrics hubs are heavy and usually your wheel needs to be rebuilt to fit the thing (not many people seem to have them for some unknown reason) - Magic gears and half link chains will only work until your chain stretches a bit - Sliding vertical dropouts seem to be the holy grail, but aren't very common or easy to find. It also detracts slightly from the clean look of a SS if you have mounting holes for a brake caliper that are unused because your caliper is mounted to the slider. Am I missing something, or is there no hassle free way to tension a SS chain? To add context to the question, I would like to build up a SS MTB that is as hassle and maintenance free as possible, and can go everywhere and be used for everything. I've been considering getting an On-One Inbred frame with horizontal drop outs on the sweet sweet special on the UK site, but I want to know that it's going to be the most hassle free frame choice possible before I take the plunge and start the project. Can all you Single Speed Gurus that hopefully have some experience in this throw some advice my way.
  8. Can someone point out where you're supposed to pay to ride? A few of us where there on Sunday for my first time and we couldn't see any signs about fees or windows where guys were taking money, so we guessed it was free and went for a ride. Were we supposed to go pay in the restaurant? I feel a bit miff now for not looking harder. About getting lost... I figure you might get completely lost a few times, but after a few times of getting lost you'll probably know your way around enough to not get hopelessly lost again, and every time you ride you'll get to know the place a bit better. And with a phone or GPS and a bit of common sense you're never really completely lost, so I don't see the big problem. It's too great a place to just discard cos you might get lost a few times. Apply rule #5 and enjoy.
  9. I rate a second hand bike is your best bet. New bikes are cool and shiny, but if you're a noob, you're probably gonna bail a bit in the beginning, so the new shiny thing isn't gonna last long. Cycling is also stupidly addictive, and upgrading your bike can be stupidly addictive too, so if you get a cheap new bike with entry level components, there's a good chance that in 6 months you're either going to want a new bike, or you're going to want to replace all your entry level components with better ones, and that can be start to get super expensive. I'd say the stuff you should look out for in a second hand bike are: Derailleurs should be SLX or XT. Fork should hopefully be an air shock and a lockout would be nice. (Hopefully Rock Shox) Bigger wheels are better if you're a noob and pick rubbish lines over rocks and stuff. Good brakes can be important, but very few entry level bikes come with good brakes (Shimanos entry level brakes are probably better than most Avids in that price range) Everything after that is open to debate cos it comes down to personal preference. A good cycling pant can be essential too, and they can be pretty expensive so don't forget to factor that into your budget.
  10. You're all wrong! Number 6 is the most important. How will everyone else know how cool and hardcore you are if you don't post everything you do on Facebook. Everything else is irrelevant if you're not posting it on Facebook.
  11. My mind is so innocent. Was thinking of coke in a can, and the maths just wasn't adding up.
  12. I feel like the Friday Fight Club thing is a myth these days. I've only been posting for a short time, but I've been reading these forums for quite a while, and I feel like the hub has gone soft lately. Whole Fridays pass without anyone hitting a key in anger. If the FFC warriors from a few years ago saw what goes on now, they'd be ashamed to call themselves hubbers. All you "ultimate hubbers" should be ashamed of yourselves for letting something as sacred as FFC go to waste
  13. Scott scale elite 29er Bought 2nd hand on the hub for R8500 Weight: 11.5kg R739/kg Is it good or bad to have a low R/kg? A makro "MTB" will have a super low R/kg, but it's rubbish. But paying R20k per kg can't be a good thing????
  14. I reckon this is one of the better apps out there for people that run with their phones : http://www.essency.co.uk/ It'll allow you to hear that home boy swear about the beatches or listen to Ge Korsten gooi Liefling like there's no tomorrow and hear the mountain lions chasing after you all at the same time. I've never used it cos I don't ride on the road much, but I think the idea is excellent.
  15. I still think jerk-off was a better name than pronk. While saying "I pronked that log" is funny, saying "I jerk-offed that log" is way better.
  16. Ya my lil trip didn't go exactly as planned. On the map, its 120km with about 60 on a dirt road and 60 on tar, so I figured 7 or 8 hours should be plenty of time. I only managed to leave at 10AM, but I told myself it would be okay. Turned out the 30km of dirt road on the way to the border post was mostly covered by super thick loose sand that made it almost impossible to ride, so it took me a bit longer than I planned to get there. To avoid the sucky dirt road on the way back I took a longer route home that was all on tar, but added about 20km to the trip. The dirt road had done it's damage though and i was properly buggered when I left the border, so the 80km home was a nightmare. Ended up doing the last 30km in the dark with no lights at all, no warm kit and no reflectors. Was super dodge. Every time a car came I just missioned off into the bushes next to the road to avoid being hit. That was without doubt the scariest thing I've ever done on a bike. But.... I cycled to Botswana, and that's all that counts
  17. If anyone can clear 1m on a MTB please post a tutorial for us "not real mountain bikers". If step 1 is "Remove your seat", or "Reconfigure anatomy", I don't think it counts.... Also... piktchas or it never happened.
  18. Great minds.....
  19. Slightly off topic, but I still think a doped Olympics would be awesome. In my doped Olympics, the awards would only be handed out a week after the event though, and you'd be disqualified if you had to be admitted to hospital or if you died. It would be crazy to see what humans could do with "modern medicine" and no rules or testing. Imagine the insane stuff that we'd see. People chucking javelins into orbit, and distance runners doing marathons at Bolt's 100m pace. I would pay good money to watch that.
  20. It's not as pretty as where you guys have been, but my bike took me to Botswana.... It's gotta count for something if you leave the country on your bike
  21. He's gonna be upset though when I beat him on my MTB.....
  22. Darn salesman lied to me.
  23. I prefer the Giro's though. I have no experience on this, but I've heard that white shoes soon become light brown shoes no matter how much you clean them
  24. After the reading absolute chaos that unfolded here : https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/126011-mtb-cleats-pedals-advice/ ... I've gotta ask... Why the clipless shoes? Why not 5.10s and flat pedals? Don't you wanna be a proper MTB rider? I ride with clipless pedals
