  1. Thanks!! From the website: "The descent down the Monster is a bit of the old route until going down a brand new section into Kloofwaters Camp. This descent is technical with a lot of loose over hard surfaces and negative cambers to negotiate." Looks like there might be some slight differences, but I don't think too much
  2. Looks like there's only 1 little climb we have to worry about..... ????
  3. I somewhat impulsively entered the 65km marathon.... I'm a bit nervous, but I did the 80km "real" monster in 2014 and survived.... but it took me 6 and a half hours. Anyone have a gpx file for the 65km route? Really helps to pace the race if you know whats coming and what climbs are left.
  4. Had a really lekker ride. Difficult one to pace though. Didn't wanna overcook the first 35km, but also wanted to pass a load of guys before things went uphill. And then didn't want to overcook the climbs but had decent legs.
  5. Weather says around 8deg at 7am, and 17deg at 11am... So now the age old question.... What to wear? Arm warmers? Base Layer? Thin Jacket? Don't have a gilet, so newspaper on the chest for the start?
  6. Did we just create a white and gold vs blue and black dress scenario?
  7. Thanks for the gpx files ????. I'm not too worried about getting lost, more just to know whats coming in terms of distances remaining and climbs. Did the 2019 route also start at the agricultural research counsel?
  8. Not sure I can load this on my garmin ????.... Must be a wahoo thing....
  9. Sweet. I'm starting in E according to the whatsapp message I got. Gonna be on a red epic if you wanna say hi ????
  10. Anyone else doing the Trailseeker this weekend at Buffelsdrift? I'm entered for the marathon (70km)... Anyone possibly have a gpx file of the route? Can't seem to find anything useful on the website?
  11. Note to self... Never go to midstream
  12. I'm not the most active forum poster, but I've been around for a while and used the classifieds quite a lot to get into the sport. When I joined, the classifieds had more of a "help a buddy out" vibe. Like if you needed something, it was a place you could find it from your friends on the hub. And if you had something you didn't need, you could sell it to your friends for a good price. I once "bought" mineral oil from a guy for a few beers, and I've sold loads of stuff at low prices just to like pass things on to someone that needs them. And ya, the comments sometimes got a bit rof, but we all have a friend or two that's a bit inappropriate and rof sometimes, but you kind of just accept that they can be a tool and move on. The new classifieds is like a cycling specific version of olx or gumtree. The "friend" vibe is gone, and it's more like a place where guys are trying to make as much as they can from the other okes here. I've kind of accepted that thats what it is now, so I don't expect much. If I see something that looks good, I send a message and say I wanna buy the thing. If I never hear from the guy again, no loss. If I do, then we can make an arrangement. If I want good customer service or desperately need something, I rather just go to a bike shop.
  13. I'll be doing it as a warm up for the CTCT too. Can't seem to find a GPX file of the route though
  14. What's the widest tyres you can run on these frames? I have the Farr Dot tyres at the moment, but I find I have to pump them flippen hard to not hit the rims on rocks, but then the ride is super bumpy and the grip isn't great. So I wanna switch to mtb tyres with more volume, but not sure how wide I can go. Will a 2.2 fit?
  15. Started in Kamberg and did a loop to Moor Park Nature Reserve and back, mostly on gravel. It was my first gravel ride after being a roadie for the last few years, but I think I'm hooked.
  16. Did my first ride on the new gravel bike. Definitely planning on making every ride Farr in the future
  17. This might be true, but it's tough to just compare numbers. The speed of the bunch and varying conditions can make a huge difference to your power and speed numbers. If I recall correctly, last years 947 was pretty windy, so times would probably be slower for the same power output. You can't escape the 300m more climbing though My 2c, the 947 is a much tougher route than the Tshwane Classic. The climbs in the first half just feel longer and more draining, and then hitting the rolling hills after Kyalami with tired legs is pretty brutal.
  18. I've been checking out the route for Sunday. Am I missing something, or is there no info on water points or road closure anywhere on the website?
  19. Seeded in BL. Looking forward to a lekker race.
  20. Thanks for the advice. My first plan was to use an extra XT rear mech and 1x crank that I have lying around, and then getting some 105 shifters. But after much reading, I found that the pull actuation is different between shimano MTB and road shifters, so thats a no-go. My next thought was then to use a long cage 105 rear mech, maybe with a wolftooth adapter, to be able to use a 11-40 cassette. I decided against that though because I figured a RD with a clutch is probably required for a 1x setup. So the only real options I see at the moment for a Shimano setup is an Ultegra RX-GS rear mech. The claimed max cassette size is 11-34 though, so I'm guessing a wolftooth adapter will be required to run 11-40. Or switch to Sram. From what I've read, it seems sram road shifters work with mtb derraileurs as long as they both use their "exact automation" system.
  21. Something beautiful got delivered today... Not quite a couch, but it's the best I could do at work . I have a question though. I'd like to run drop bars with a 1 x 11 setup. From what I've read, 105 shifters won't work with a SLX or XT rear mech. Has anyone come up with a working shimano system to get this right? (trying to avoid buying an entire 1x11 sram groupset)

  23. For me, the real heros of the day were the 5 or 6 guys that let me jump the queue for the toilets before the start to avoid having to use the field. Missing my start time was the least of my worries while I was waiting
  24. Anyone know what the road condition will be like in terms of potholes, man hole covers etc? And what the road closure situation looks like?
  25. This was under Venue arrangements on my seeding email: "Late registration as well as registration for the kids races and 5km fun walk/run will take place inside the dining hall, which is adjacent to the starting chutes." I assume that means you can register on the day.
