  1. Always nice to have pista (track) specific pedals on track bike. They differ from strada (road) pedals as they don't have an outer cage and increase the lean angle of pista bikes on the track banking. Some pics......
  2. Thank you, haven't had the greatest luck winning the past few auctions. Rather hoping for a find locally
  3. One of my babies. I changed the Bora One's as I couldn't get used to the carbon deep section road noise (see post # 710).
  4. Very nice Eppie. I too bought an old cast iron truing stand but need to renovate it as a few bits were modified over the years. I also picked up a bike stand which is so heavy that no matter the force used on the bike, the stand doesn't move. The chap I got them from said his grandfather had brought them into the country in the early 1900's!
  5. That is one super restoration and very rare worldwide. Well done Rocket ship! I look forward to seeing the bike in the steel
  6. I love the early 600 and DA Shimano groupsets. I have some factory drilled 600 levers which are pure works of art and a DA ax aero crank with the bearings located within the crank arms. I also own a DA 10mm gauge track crank which I am battling to find local rear sprockets. Lovely stuff. This was a great Shimano era which almost unseated Campy at the time.
  7. Check the measurements of the pivot bolts of the FD as they may be similar to other 600 series FD's. It may be possible to swap out the clamp for a braze-on head piece. Good find, those brake callipers deserve more pictures being posted to show us all what great pieces of art Shimano produced so briefly. So says a total Campagnolo fan!
  8. Finished off this Look KG66 with full Dura Ace 7400 series groupset.
  9. Post some pics of the fastening bolts
  10. Also post pictures of the lugs, BB and dropouts.
  11. Agreed. Mercer Bikes can build you an amazing frame, it's up to you how deep you able to dig into your pocket.
  12. Please post some pics if you want a response
  13. Quick reminder of the retro - classic ride on Saturday morning in Alberton! https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/156476-retro-road-ride-saturday-january-23-alberton/page-3?do=findComment&comment=2798116
  14. Heads up! Solomon's Woodmead have a few 32 hole Mavic MA3's available.
  15. Just don't mention that you sometimes take a ride without a helmet. Boy did I get a bollocking. Too many death threats and lots of verbal abuse from the fashion conscience bikers! SA is a weird place and not very tolerant of any one that doesn't follow the herd.
  16. There are clever people out there who can assist but the no 56 would be the size of the frame, BL for maker, Bill Lange, the no 146 could be number of frames made and 531 is the steel steel type. D6 is probably the date manufactured D for 4 (1984?) and 6 (June). Hope it helps
  17. Lovely bike Barry. Bill Lange often made custom bikes so your's may even have been made for the original owner. I recall he was situated in the Cape? I gave QuintonB a deLange frame a few months back made with high grade 853 or 943 tubing. Send him a PM. The frame also had a great original colour combo but was destroyed by what I gathered was someone burning off the paint coating. What were they smoking! I reckone your bike to be mid 80's. Check BB lug to see if any telltale signs.
  18. Hey Guys & Girls Another retro ride planned in Joey's on the 23rd this month. It is in the South this time. - follow the link for details and sign up. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/156476-retro-road-ride-saturday-january-23-alberton/
  19. Thank you HeyYou What did we do with the left levers? Going to place order immediately for the Cinelli head badge! Regards the seized cable in the shifter lever. I had a similar problem and couldn't use the cable as it was seriously rusty. Took my Dremel with micro drill bit and drilled into lead cap. Used larger drill bit thereafter until close to lever housing. I then used engraving tip and ground out the balance of the tip. Careful as a few cable wires may be present. Once that was done I drilled a small hole through a bit of flat wood and inserted the cable through the hole and placed the wood into my vice. The lever attached by the cable on the one side and the rest of cable fed through the hole on the other. Took the loose cable and attached to larger cable attached to towbar. Got the missus to pull off. Cable pulled out of hole and lever undamaged.
  20. Hi Tracknut Going through my bits I too found a RH Simplex Retrofriction shifter lever! Did you get any leads to a spare lever of two?
  21. And guys, I am still looking for one of these please http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CINELLI-Head-Bike-headtube-Badge-Replica-Vintage-alloy-/252218633671?hash=item3ab966edc7:g:ZbYAAOSwcF9UX6-h Someone out there must have one for sale. Willing to pay big bucks!
  22. Raleigh was built in SA under licence for many years and controlled the market. They had factories in Springs and Vereeniging. Probably closed down under sanction days and influx of cheap Taiwan imports. Until a few months ago there was still a local supplier in Doornfontein who had NOS parts and after market bike spares. Agree with Heyyou, I would not spend a lot of money restoring the Raleigh as you will not get a lot of money when trying to resell the bike. Good solid gas pipe frame though. They had a habit of deforming after a crash. I have an old locally made Charlton from the same factory with a slightly bent fork.
  23. Or Deda. They make some cool tape for Bianchi.
  24. Hi Rozanne I look forward to seeing pics of the Carlton idc. Old wheels had steel spokes as opposed to newer stainless steel spokes. They are probably 36 wheels and therefore a lot of spokes to clean! Have a closer look at the nipples and spoke threads. Do they look rusty? I have snapped old spokes on wheels I cleaned and it was either close to the nipples or in the middle. I am not a strong rider. If the nipples look ok and you decide to clean the wheels you will need to use sandpaper to remove the rust and smooth out the pitting. It is a very hard and tiring job and if you don't continue to clean the spokes the rust comes back pretty quickly. I have a 70-80's set of wheels for a lovely Eddy Merckx track bike I am restoring and have decided to rebuild the wheels. The rims are Fiamme red label on Record hubs. The reasons for deciding to rebuild the wheels because: I save myself many hours of hard labour cleaning the rims, steel spokes and hubs (difficult getting my fingers through the spokes to clean the hubs evenly);by stripping the wheels i can clean the hubs properly and get them looking good;new stainless steel spokes look good and will last another 30-40 years;I can check rim for cracks and clean them properlywill not have an issue with snapping spokesThe downside is it costs ˜R1,000 for the rebuild adding to the cost of restoration. As to the frame. Without having seen the frame my advise is don't repaint unless the frame was previously repainted. The scrapes, dings and chips are all character for a track bike imho. I have a 59 Vitesse pursuit track frame which paint work is poor with lots of rust showing through. It also has has a ding on the top tube from the handlebar slamming into the top tube after a fall. I am fortunate to be the custodian of the frame and promised not to destroy the frame as it still has UCI stickers commemorating the 1962 Pursuit World Champion! One of the previous owner's immediately recognised the frame after enquiring if the top tube was dented. The frame made its way from Belgium to SA via many past owners past and present and I am honoured to have the frame. It is one of my prized possessions. The Eddy Merckx I sent to CT to have the rear seat stays straightened and the frame builder removed a dent in the seat tube without needing to respray the frame. I needed to have the seat stays sorted as they were damaged. It is however a costly exercise. Please post pictures of your frame and groupset/wheels so we can provide further recommendations. Here is a picture of the EM with my Cinelli's wheels.
