  1. I see a lot of people that talk about training and train certain things without thinking of what they are doing. Any training you do should be relevent. You train to race, not race to train. So every thing you do must be relevant. If you ride hills in a race, does it hurt or not? If it does, then in training it should also. Now you get roling climbs, steep/slow, steep/fast, etc. Same with sprints, you get excelerations, dead starts, attacks with a bit of pacing aftewards and then flat out sprints to the finnish. You should train every aspect of your race and train at that part at race intensity. Endurance is what you do inbetween all the hard efforts in a race, so that is the intensity.
  2. Or should I say rave?
  3. And all those that worry about warrety issues. A pair of Time pedals I baught mid last year. Well the one pedal broke during this holiday. I emailed them, and they asked me to send them the pedals. A week later I recieved brand spanking new ones. No questions asked. They are truely worthy of a rant.
  4. Sell the 9 speed cassette and buy a cheap 8spd. Or sell the 9 and make the wheel a ss for the trainer. Your lbs should be able to help.
  5. Does anybody know a place that helps with job hunting in gauteng area?
  6. Okei. Like stated before. Both ure the same power, meaning watts. You are still displacing the same weight over the same distance in the same time. But, grinding and spinning uses different energy resources. The pros winning tdf do normally spin on longer (15km+) climbs. But on the shorter climbs they do tend to push a heavier gear, using more momentum to get over. They can also wind a shorter climb easier while grinding. If thex had to respond to an attack while spinning on a short climb(common in sa), then they would lose too much time dropping gears. Thats why they are able to grind and work that to a spin when needed.
  7. Well, Ill use the oppertunity. Does anyone know of a company that are looking for graduate mechanical engineers. PM me please, I am very desperately looking. And yes, I am willing to relocate.
  8. So, it shows you the correct speed and distance only on a flat road. On uphills an downhills you actually go faster than the gps is saying?
  9. So, while riding today and going uphill with the girlfriend, she wasnt happy with the slow speed we were going. This got me thinking, does a gps calculate speed only on a horrisontal scale or does it recon in the hight gained? If using a 45deg triangle to eyplain, horisontal distance would only be 1, while vertical is also 1, but you are actually traveling the vector, thats the squareroot of 2. When looking at a gps map, its totally flat, so does it then just measure the horisontal speed?
  10. Waited 3 weeks, emailed crc yesterday and got my parcel today. Have to tell crc that it arrived finally, good thing is that the post office only charged me R25 for a R1200 parcel. A bit of a score.
  11. Hi all. My girlfriend has an edge 500. About 2 months ago the spd/cad sensor stoped working. Ive now changed the battery, but the reset light still doesnt come on and the garmin doesnt detect it. Ive now changed the battery again, but still no luck. Any ideas what could be wrong?
  12. And downhills dont cancel out uphills on a circular route aswell. If you have a 1km climb with a 1km downhill, and you whant a ave speed of 30km/h. Now say you ave 20km/h uphill the uphill takes 3min, now you have 1 min left to cover the 1km downhill, thats a 60km/h ave downhill. If your climbing speed decreases to 15km/h, that takes 4min to cover the 1km climb and you have no chance to cover the 1km downhill for a 30km/h overall ave.
  13. One problem with gym stationary bikes are that you are not training exactly the same mussels. You do not sit in the same position, your bike does not move with you from side to side and there are no side forces like wind to lean against. Another reason why you can hold a certain amount of watts on that and not outside. But you can still build basic cycling fitness. Further, doing a circular route does not cancel out wind factor. With the wind from the front you loose more time compared to a tail wind. This is due to the wind resistance increasing exponesially. Also, you can only compare your watt output with someone that has the same combined weight as you and your bike, that is if you go slower than 25km/h, anything faster and your personel aerodynamics will start to have an effect.
  14. I think if a seller posts something, first come, first serve. Seller should respond as soon as possible for new posts. Bumped posts could take a longer time to reply. If the buyer does not reply within 24hours, then he forfeits the sale and its up for grabs again. Once you set a price (seller and buyer) stick to it. I reckon the buyer should always pay postage, seeing as the seller already needs the money. Not shure how the rest of you feel, but I recon also that money should be transferred always before product is posted. And Im no angel, Ive also inquired and then dropped the sale without notice. But I recon a general 24hour rule is manageble and fair. My 2c.
  15. The freebody runs on a big bush closest to the centre of the wheel. You can take it of yourself and regrease the whole freebody or take it in to be done. What you do is tale of the axel cup on the left hand side. Then take a 10 or 12 allenkey on the left and a 5 on the right. Loosen the right hand screw, pull it out and pull off the freebody, off the hub, while rotating. Take care not to let the freewheel catch fall off. Take a cloth to clean every thing and regrease. When reassembling, push the cathes down, and rotate freebody to go over. Take care to ensure that a small washer in the freebody is still in place, because it seperates the 2 bearings. Then just re insert the screw, tighten and replace the left hand cup. SIMPLE

    McD's

One thing to remember is that we dont eat the same mcds as they do in the states. SAs food regulations are way more strict.
  17. Im also all for longer elite races aswell. If they are worried about the amount of entries, then why not give more incentive for the smaller elite and u/23 teams and individuals. Make entries cheaper, prize money more spread out (like paying to around 20th place) and get more exposure on tv for all the races. The main thing is exposure. Teams cant get sponsers if the sponsers have nothing to show for. The 3min covarage races get, only showing 1min of the racing is worth nothing. Not to mention the 5sec the ladies race get only at the sprint. Our races in sa are breeding only 1 type of rider, from the u14 up already. Sprinters. Thats all. Guys that just sit, do no racing or tactics.
  18. If all else fails, read the instructions.
  19. While sending all those that can afford it to go to europe, the young guys that have no money, still stay and race our local stront races. So 10 guys get developed and the rest of SA cyclists still suck. Why not try improving our national standard here, where everybody can benifit. We had uci races, it dissapeared. Why not help the small teams, to develop good riders by cutting team costs at races and increasing distances? I meen, for 1 low budget team to get to a race is already over R1000 just on entries and if they need accomodation, thats another R2000 at least. My point is help everyone at home and lift our local standard, then more cyclists will rise to european standards, because the gap is smaller.
  20. Im just thinking, why doesnt all of our national champs go? Evans can time trial at an ave over 50 at national chams, he jurt won clover tour? He is clearly on form. Our u23 national champions also didnt pitch? But I guess it also comes down to that there is very little national pride left and the few that would love to represent are deemend not good enough.
  21. No one have any experience?
  22. So, looking at getting some of these, but what is the main difference between the zero and the light action models?
  23. There is n mtb and road race on saterday. You can mingle there and hear about rides for sunday. The race is at president brand primary skool.
  24. Thanks for all these replies. Looks like look really has n few fans. Looking at trying a set of speeplays for testing. If that stil doesnt satisfy, then I might try the keo max if I can find a pair to test.
  25. I thought they had great pics in the mag. I think they are aiming at the more sa pro and europe pro schene. Hope so actually. And good quality the paper and printing itself. Give them a chance. Just like in cycling, everybody starts somewhere and nobody gets clip in pedals in the beginning. They just have to learn the ropes. Give it a chance.
