  1. Enjoy your Sylvia. She's a great machine. Let the modding begin! Have a look at a PID to help you regulate the temperature in future.
  2. I used to suffer heavily from cramping. I tried all sorts of supplements, but none of them worked for me. What eventually worked was longer and harder training rides. All the research I did pointed at fatigue being a big factor for cramping, although there is plenty of "we don't really know why it happens" out there.
  3. Seems to deploy even for a simple fall, like falling over because you couldn't clip out. MTB sees possibly multiple little falls in a single outing. I do see how for road or commuting it could work nicely.
  4. Something like a Macap M4 stepless and doserless. Mazzer make some top quality grinders too. The rocky is pretty solid, but I find it clumps too much.
  5. I have the Sylvia, and I love it. Just my opinion, but you probably want a better Grinder.... They say spend about double on the Grinder that you spend on the machine... Obviously, that's just to prove the point.... The budget always dictates. I bought a rancilio rocky, but I wish a had bought something slightly better.
  6. For those on carbs for race day, this was recommended to me by someone who's opinion I really trust. Apparently the pepto pro is a product that dramatically increases the body's ability to replenish glycogen stores in the muscles. Good for during high intensity races! I'm no expert, but what I'm told is that we can normally only absorb carbohydrate concentrations of 5g per 100, but pepto pro increases that to just over 20.... Or something. http://www.atlife.co.za/content/products_peptosport_powerberry_tub.html I'm not linked to this product in any way, but I thought I'd get some hubpinions!
  7. Actually, and stupidly, I never thought about trying to keep it warm... I'm not sure I'd like it cold. Sounds like honey and espresso is the answer.
  8. I was thinking about that initially, but I've been using bulletproof coffee as part of my pre long ride breakfast for a while and really like it... I thought the MCT's would also help on the bike for multi stage races? I'm undecided on the carbs for stage racing at the moment.
  9. Has anyone tried to take Bulletproof coffee out on a ride? I'm keen to see if it separated out again after a while (which wouldn't be great). I have a high caffeine dependance that I need to feed on the bike. When I was a carb head, I used to smash the Gels with Caffeine in them... Now I'm thinking bulletproof coffee with added honey for the bike... MCT, Carbs, Caffeine. Yum.
  10. I only eat on the bike if I feel hungry.... Which happens on the longer rides.
  11. I was definitely warmer this morning. Might lose the Base layer tomorrow...
  12. I don't think it's a case of advantages... I believe it's more about preference. I prefer my 1x10 setup because I couldn't learn to be in the right gear on 2x10 and kept being caught out by sudden steep climbs. I also used to get a lot of chain suck. In 1x10, It's really easy for me to find the right gear really fast, and zero chain suck. I also find it really nice and quiet. Some prefer the ability to quickly dump or gain gears using the Front Derailleur... I just couldn't get the hang of it.
  13. Get them to Send his story to noakes.... He could use more case studies I'm sure...
  14. Yip. +1 here for faulty strap....
  15. Nice ride this morning. Thanks gents!
  16. I'm still very new to this, but Hang in there! It took me about 4 weeks of very strict eating. Last week Saturday I thought I was going to die. Yesterday I went for a 90km ride, and I've never felt better on the bike. It's so hard to describe the feeling of almost unlimited endurance. I was pretty fit already, but this was different. Take some emergency bananas and plenty of water. I found when I got into trouble, a banana would help after about 10 mins.
  17. I might join you too on Tuesday, and then head to work for my commute.
  18. Yip. Commuting. And that's why I think I should eat more.... It's a huge amount of physical activity. Perhaps an excuse for a carb or two.
  19. Great post this. I'm the same. I don't want to lose weight, but I'm looking for health and better energy management through this kind of eating. My problem is that I keep losing... I'm also hungry quite often, so I've realised I probably need to eat more. My meals are certainly higher percentage of fat compared to anything else, but I suppose I need to eat larger portions or higher percentage fat....
  20. Man, bread is like heroine! I ordered a cheese omelette for lunch, asked for now break. They deliver it with 2 slices of delicious buttermilk rye! It took everything I had not to eat them.
  21. Give SS a try on your MTB. Put it in one gear and ride all the way. No cheating. Then you'll know. And then enjoy your new built project.
  22. Stats from the launch event: 125 km 2100 m Day 2 94 km 1730 m Day 3 65 km 1950 m Day 4 70 km 1420 m
  23. Ok, including the fatshake? Or do you mean post fat shake I shouldn't need to eat any more on the ride? I'm trying to limit any further weight loss.... I've lost 20kg (now 90kg at 1.98m tall) already.
  24. Hi there, I thought I'd share my experience, and possibly mistake from Saturday morning. We planned for a 100km ride over breedts.... I was really excited. I'm about 2 weeks in to very strict low carb, and high fat. On Saturday morning, I had a fat shake from breakfast, and nothing else. I packed some emergency food (Droewors, salami sticks, bananas, macadamias, dried cranberries, even a bottle of 32GI). Oh boy. At 45km I had a wave of nausea and dizziness and the feeling of impending bad stomach. I had to stop and get off the bike. I hadn't felt different before then, and had been mainly drinking water, with a few sticks of Salami until then. I ate the banana which made me feel better, and then we continued cycling. Afterwards, I started to take sips of 32GI because I was feeling very flat. I'm pretty sure this was a little bit of bonk surfing.. Anyway, turns out I forgot to add salt to the fat shake. Could this have had a negative impact? I seemed to get a big second wind after about 70km, and finished strongly. Maybe too much fat for me in the morning so early on? Either way, I have persevered and am riding daily on water only. Not really feeling any reduction in power for now, and in fact beating many of my previous bests for training rides. I think I'll still keep taking carbs on the bike for big rides and races, but I suppose how much I actually eat is to be seen.
