  1. So i am in the market for some new MTB wheels.

the riding i am doing currently is some XC riding (the occasional race like 947 MTB), general marathon riding and stage races like Sani/W2W etc.

    i live in JHB.

85-90% of my mtb rides are comparable to Cradlemoon yellow route and surrounding outrides.

the question here is 25mm or 30mm internal width when paired to 2.35 or maybe 2.25 tires.

my gut says the 25mm would be just fine and my head says 30mm is more progressive for the industry.

    thoughts?

I've been riding 2.35 tires on 30mm ID rims the past 9 months and it made a noticeable difference.  Really enjoying the lower pressures.

  2. What is the best affordable option between micro spline and Xd drive and what hubs would be recomended.

SLX 12 speed is the sweet spot.  First prize is if you current hub manufacturer has a micro spline freehub body for your existing hub.  Many hub manufacturers have been added since beginning of 2020, just not sure of availability in ZA (https://bikerumor.com/2020/04/20/a-comprehensive-list-of-micro-spline-compatible-hub-mfgs-for-12-spd-shimano-cassettes/)

Like many has said, depending on budget a good start would be Sunrace 11- 51 cassette with SLX 12 speed to start off and upgrade wheel/hub to micro spline at later stage.

If budget allows new hub/wheel also consider a Lyne Components micro spline wheelset or hub (https://www.on-lynecomponents.com/collections/wheels).  "Affordable" if budget allows ... and lekker local bunch of guys with excellent support.  Then you can slap on SLX 12 speed cassette straight away.

Good luck figuring it out. It's half the fun and makes the ride so much more enjoyable when the plan comes together.

  3. CWC In store service is non-existent. i walked in 3 days ago, walked around aimlessly for 10mins then left without even a single sales man acknowledging my presence.

+1 on this experience. I can't remember when last anyone of the in-store CWC salespeople approached to offer assistance... they just float around aimlessly.

  4. Just checking to make sure, when you say SLX 12x shifter it has to be the 12 speed SLX M7100 I-spec shifter, right?  Because the SLX M7100 12 speed shifter is the new I-spec EV standard and should just screw onto the SLX M7100 brakes lever without any adapters?

  5. I'm considering XT 12 Speed for my next hardtail build.

Are there any XT 12 Speed users that can give me some rider feedback please?

Ive read positive reviews on the XT 12 speed regarding the smooth shifting under load. (Sounds great)

Ive read negative feedback about the XT 12 Speed clutch issues. Seems to get stuck and then needs a a clutch service with specific Shimano grease. (Sounds like a pain in the butt)

Hi Ivan.  I'd say go for it.  I moved over from XT M8000 11 speed to the new XT M8100 12 speed a couple of months ago and I'm genuinely impressed.  It's really as good as all the reviews say.  IMO the shifting is noticeably softer and slightly more crisp than the XT M8000.  They also got the gear steps on the cassette exactly right.  I never feel like I need some more/less or in between gears.  The shifting under load is phenomenal and like most of the reviews say, it's almost better the more pressure you apply!  It blows the mind that the ramps on the cassette pick up the chain without any issue.  The whole drivetrain is quick and easy to install in less than two hours.  It's also an incredibly quiet drivetrain.  The clutch issue isn't new XT 12 speed specific and has been around with the previous generation XT as well.  Seems it's hit and miss with the clutch issue and not everyone experiences it.  Best would be to do a once or twice a year grease of the clutch.  Takes no more than 5 min to do.

  6. +1 for Courier Guy

Used them three times in the past month to send parcels to Jhb and Durban. Quick and efficient. Super easy to book your parcel on www.xoc.co.za and get quote so you know what you' re in for. All shipments delivered within 2 business days.

  7. checked it last night and today, getting this message.

Just getting pissed off because my bike is boxed up, could be out riding now.

Make sure that in the Time and Account number fields you input it exactly like it appears on the proof of payment.  In time include the seconds (12:23:45) and on the account number input the exact abbreviated number that appears on the proof of payment, including the ".." (e.g. ..234567).  I got stuck on the account number part and when I input it exactly as it appeared on the proof of pmnt I got a confirmation that it was valid.  Good luck.  Hope you get sorted.

  8. Thanks, also going to wait a few days. Just wanted to see if there is any way or verifying the transaction.

If you go to the FNB Online Banking page there is a "Verify payment" function below the log in section. It's pretty useful. Used it last week to confirm a payment for a Bikehub sale. Once you input the relevant confirmation details on the proof of payment you got sent it tells you whether it's a valid EFT payment.
