  1. Yes. It has happened on occasion with me to. As a matter of fact, yesterday as well. It was preceded with a consistent “re-connection” of my sensors. I also would like the cause and solution. I write it off to Garmin never being perfect on their software side, but I have had Polar and Garmin just gives you so much more functionality and the other brands don’t bother with Discovery.
  2. Saw a nice product advertorial on BikeHub Go to Website of Brand to Buy Online Cannot buy Online Saw they still rock old school - "Buy from Retailer" - route to market Go to first retailer - Can't find online Go to second retailer - Does not have online store Lost interest
  3. Hi All I came across this posting on Facebook Market Place. After meeting the seller, I just never got a good feeling, and walked away. I cannot say for sure but I have a high index of suspicion. Issues: Owned for a week but no box or slip Said was bought at auction but no auction slip Said was never used but had 2 runs on 13 and 15 of Feb on Table Mountain. AND the runs was in miles (+- 6 miles for each run) So if anyone knows of someone that lost his garmin please see this add Is this item still available? - https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/480135760025137/ Hopefully it is only my paranoid self and I walked away from a great ligitimate deal.
  4. Great Development. Regarding the credit card fee paid by the buyer-how does this gel with PASA (payment association of South Africa) strict “no surcharging”? In line with this, my understanding is that all banks’ agreement with service providers highlights this prohibition. I see that Bike Hub provides a service and is not the seller, but was just wondering all the same.
  5. Check out Frog Bikes. They have a SA distributer. Awesome bikes for kids. My Boy road it from 3 years old. Yes a bit expensive, but very light weight and cool features like NO backpedal and handle bar stoppers. I cannot stress how important bike size is. There are 8 kids of similar age in our street, none could ride before 5-6 becuase their 16” were just to big and heavy
  6. Went to the shops DMed. None have
  7. Hi, Where can I get the Special DT Swiss Grease. JUST THE GREASE. Not the Star Rachet, not the Upgrade Kit, just the Potjie of Grease. It's constantly out of stock. Danie
  8. For mortals like MOST us, really only 1 difference, the price. But for mortals like SOME of us, the difference lies in the fact that I spend more than you, and that can be important. ????
  9. Having read through all this one can conclude that stock holding, overhead and exchange rate all play a part. BUT it really comes down to the opportunity presented by the lock down driving a short term spike in demand. And good on the guys for cashing in. Capitalism 101. And whilst one can make an argument for government to intervene to protect necessities like PPE pricing to shoot through the roof, a Kikr and Bike computer is hardly a necessity. So let market forces be. BECAUSE that 101 has a flip side. In this case its called summer and passing of a fad. How many people are really going to look at that R20-25k piece of equipment, eating another R300 a month in Zwift fees whilst they ride their bikes outdoor and think that was money well spent. Realising again that we can even ride our bikes outdoors in winter, and that his salary was just cut by 10% or so due to the ongoing effects of Covid, the Hub and Gumtree will be flooded. I bought my Hammer H1 (H2 was already out) for R5k on the Hub. And as soos as that happens, new prices will adjust again.
  10. Sorry yes, saw the link and a quick browse saw it was at bikemarket. So I just assumed it was used. My bad
  11. Bontrager wheel warranty Plus, they're backed by the Carbon Care Wheel Loyalty Programme, which offers free replacement or repair to the original owner for wheels Trek Bicycle warranty Trek Bicycle Corporation provides each original retail purchaser of a Trek bicycle an amazing warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. So no, only original owner enjoy the warranty. Most bikes are like that (I think Titan is different). Think about it, a lifetime warranty. Who can ever do that. But in the high value bicycle market, you are very likely to sell you bike after 3-5 years. So with that little T&C, it’s for all practicle reasons a 3-5 year warrant
  12. Does the Trek warranty transfer upon sale? I doubt it. So warranty irrelevant. But I stand corrected.
  13. Fully built bikes have 15% import duty. Then you add 15% VAT Bike components only have the VAT. Canyon bikes comes partially assembled. So I can see that some at the Customs office might process it all as bike parts instead of complete bike. It will also depend on the invoice (many lines vs 1 or 2). But shipping is flat. Whether its their €800 bike or €5000 bike. And that makes the cheaper ones less attractive.
  14. Basic Overhead math is my guess Take 1 overhead component for a very basic comparison. 1 Boss of Garmin SA, divided by x number of units sold 1 Boss of Wahoo SA, divided by y number of units sold In SA: x is far greater than y and so the the absorption per unit is much less. Then, Garmin does not have 30kg units being shipped from China. And I am sure some of that shipping gets cross allocated in the overhead allocation math. Brands is SA with greater volume just have better scale. They will even get better foward rates on FX contracts. Now if these guys can learn from the ProShop. The golf clubs I am looking at is goong at 11 ZAR to 1 USD. Now that is fighting for the little guy
  15. “Let’s do a Promo Article as part of our marketing strategy”, says one JaSure exec. “Well, there is a bit of a global bike boom due to the Pandemic, so let do a “How to get into Cycling” one”, says another. ”Great Idea, but to get the ultimate traction, let’s do a bad one, that can lead to 50+ comments and days on top of the active comments list”. “And makes sure somewhere we drop something about Specialized in the comments, that will keep things going a bit longer.” And so we all fall for it. Fun times to be had though. PS. Why is cycling gloves in particular so expensive. Pound 4 Pound in my book, the most expensive general bike item
  16. Really Ride London: Local £79 foreign £109 Comrades Marathon: Local R600 African R1500 foreign R3800 Most of the Prestige City Marathons Those are the ones quickly to mind as they are in my interest sphere, but it’s more common than you think. The Ironman Charge an international benchmarked price, regardless of where. So it’s different.
  17. Like the brand or not. Like the price or not. This thread has 160 comments before me. 57 on the EVO. Cannondale Scalpel 43 Trek Supercaliber 15 (at the time of this post) Those carry equally crazy prices. My take. This brand has alot more brand presence than any other in SA. And they get traction like no other. Traction provided from Fanboys and Trolls alike. They all click. I think the marketing guys in the S’Bosch offices go “mission accomplished!”
  18. I paid R50k for a R7.2kg (no pedals and cages) Ultegra Di2 Disc brake bike - New! It’s called last year’s bike that need to go and make space for this year’s bike. Interesting that 15s up Alp du Huez. Could a rim brake have been quicker, maybe? But would love the timing of the round trip - Up and Down. And throw in a sprinkle of rain and time again.
  19. May I dare to suggest another approach as Banning alcohol outright brings so many other unintended consequences. (Like for instance increased gang violence, especially in suburbs currently not affected) I would rather like to see less jail time and more public humiliation. Hear me out. All the posts above tells of a sort of social acceptance and childish coolness of drinking. How better then to see a convicted drunk driver on his knees in his orange jumpsuit in a public bathroom cleaning toilets every weekend. Managing bed pans at an old age home. It can be a Public/Private partnership with businesses serious about addressing this scourge. Sharing the admin burden. I find jail time problematic. We force the law abiding society, and the direct victims, to foot these idiots’ board and logging through our taxes. Here they are out of sight and out of mind, not serving any reminder of the consequences. We unfortunately also punish the kids of these idiots without a parent or at least the financial support. So I say, let them continue to work. Forfeight their full estate to the government and pay 100% tax on their earnings. Let them receive a stipend from this to maintain a pre-defined standard of living, unrelated to the one they had before the crime. Residual can go to the affected family or alcoholic treatment programs. On Friday’s you spend a night in local police cell as that comes with it’s own punishment. And weekends and some weeknights you work a job where the public can see you and invariably insult you. No holidays or travel. Daily Facebook and social media posts by the perpetrator stating that he/she was responsible for the death/injury to x. Essentially you must remain tax positive and serve as a public example. If not - then of to jail. Bottom line - we have a societal problem. We need to change attitudes. And rotting away in jail (if it happens) does not facilitate this. PS. Some people must be removed from society, so this is not a blanket argument for all crimes.
  20. Knowing the wife and family, my condolences, and may you find peace in this tough times. I would like to start seeing “plublic hangings”. There is always an uproar, especially in the community affected (whether it’s cyclists being killed or kids being murdered/raped) at the time of the crime, but we hardly ever hear of the consequences, even if there is. We need to see car crushing Thursdays broadcasted on SABC. We need to see purple overalls cleaning Toilets and bathroom floors at sporting events (purple meaning that guy did something wrong when he was driving drunk) The man in the street must be reminded of these ill choices every day. Yes prison is one thing, but I feel the public at large is not aware enough practically of the consequences of these terrible deeds. Public hangings of old was not just for entertainment, it served as the ultimate reminder of the consequences. PS, banning alcohol might bring some respite for cyclists, but imagine the gang wars - which is a struggle to police - or the imprisoned fathers and mothers - which is easy to police - got nabbed that one time he wanted to drink 1 beer responsibly.
  21. Hi all you knowledagble downhill hubbers. I have 2 questions for getting a 7 year into downhill mountain biking. My son is definitely showing interest. Jumping, tail whipping and getting air is, according to him, the only mountain biking, and going uphill is nothing short of a necessary evil made tolerable by me pushing him. So my questions: 1st - How do I get him a little more exposure into downhill. In and around Stellenbosch. Something that include a bit of teaching will be good as I know next to nothing bar Greg Minnaar. 2nd - If the bug truely bites and a new bicycle is needed (he is due a size upgrade anyway) where do one even start. Most websites refers to brands and models not available in South Africa and at eye watering prizes. Thanks All
  22. I don’t agree. This service is for a specific client, like myself. Assessing my own risk, theft from home is extremely low, almost nill. Thus, having 3 bikes, it just do not make sense for me to insure all of them for theft while not riding 3 times over. And, whilst I can possibly exclude theft from home from my policy, I can only ride 1 bike at a time. So in principle, this approach is what I have been looking for. Only problem, their rates are not linear enough for me. A R400 full month quote equates to something like R190 for 1 day. Yes, you cap out at the R400, but that is after like 5 or 6 days. this therefore does not really help the 3 bicycle dilemma. You will be better of insuring them traditionally and negotiate multi asset discounts, especially if you ride each 3 or 4 times a month. so now I contradict myself I know. So in summary, great idea in principle for those with low “theft from home” risk. Poor pricing negates the advantages though
  23. The 2 main reasons alcohol is banned 1 - it will add a 4th national cue (after food, medical, grants) 2 - our huge sharing of a single bottle culture. Quarts are shared, allot. Since starting working in the industry I have learnt that one’s own drinking habits and preferences (middle age white male) is insignificant compared to the habits and preferences of the SA alcohol market.
  24. So do they obey the law or not in Holland? Got confused here. Yes it is kids, but surely they had parents. No one can convince me that there is any country anywhere where everyone is fully compliant with local orders
  25. Ordered Friday. Received today. This and my previous package was done by DHL. I think value comes into play for CRC to choose between skynet and DHL
