  1. Please, that does not apply to travellers. Under SARS regs:http://www.sars.gov.za/ClientSegments/Customs-Excise/Travellers/Pages/Arrival-in-SA.aspx In the case of bringing in a bicycle as sporting goods, you declare you are the owner and its for your personal use and if the value is under R25000, and you paid VAT or other tax on the other side without reclaiming it SARS will no penalise you. So yeah thanks for the offer but having imported many things for business and personal needs I have a fairly good idea of what attracts tariffs and what doesn't. I filled out a similar form to theITAC form you presented when I repatriated in 2004. This was for declaration of my container with my household contents. Yes duty was applicable to this according to the value on the mainfest and the bicycles did not attract duty. Furniture, appliances, eletronic items did.
  2. Yes that what I said because that's how the rules are applied in practise. Lets keep this to bicycles here bcause these are classified as sporting goods and since they have a different tariff code no ITAC import permit is required unless you are importing to resell i.e. you are a vendor.
  3. The actual process is you claim Aussie Vat and then pay SA VAT on landing. But if you have not claimed that VAT back, and the bike is part of your luggage, and you're not importing a container load of them, SARS gives you exemption on the first bike as its sportin goods. Also, the VAT is only applicable if the bike is new. If its been ridden, then its no longer considered new and VAT is applicable to its resale value on theHub.co.za and we all that that is less than the R4000-00 limit above which VAT is charged by SARS on goods you bring with your luggage.
  4. VAT is not applicable if he paid VAT in Aus.
  5. sufficient RAM for TTS4?
  6. how does it handle the real life video?
  7. I didn't realise they had reopened
  8. website to follow the action?
  9. I am running TTS4 on I-magic. It seems to be working very well. Althought Tacx claims to have fixed a bug where the software crashes if the PC enters sleep mode, I find the software pauses for a long time if the pc does enter slep mode. I just turn sleep mode off and the problem does not occur. What I like about tacx is that the hardware and software are all upgradable. ONe down sise to TTS4 is that any video below T1956.30 is not compatible and won't load. They have a downlaod program so fix that but it has not worked for me. Also, the I-magic power meter seems to be pretty accurate which is nice
  10. Not really, the CPA does protect an individual in this regard. If someone moves to SA from England and brings their Pinarello with them. Is it in ASG's or Pinarello's interest to tell him/her to fob off if there is an issue with the bike while in SA? No and the CPA says that the consumer has rights and that means that the official distributor must hear out the case. In this case the owner calls up ASG and explains the issue. ASG can supply a new frame as per Pinarello warranty policy but they are entilted to compensation if the replacement frame has to be imported due to it not being in stock, so they can charge you shipping for the frame. The ultimate burdon of responsibility lies with teh manufacturers. The issue of fakes in this case has to be taken up by Pinarello and in each country where this problem is experieinced. Way too expensive to go the legal route
  11. Its a very difficult case to win, thats why very few companies actually try to take it on. Look at Rolex or TAG Heuer, very copied watches that you can buy in Thailand for cheap cheap on the street. But there is enough subtle difference between the genuine article and the copy that the vendor can easily claim buyers ignorance lead to the problem. also the price is much much lower so anyone who buys the fake is actually party to the crime but who does the brand owner go after? the manufacturer of said fake, the distributor, the retailer or the purchaser? Now I hear hubbers cry kill them all kill them all, which would be typical. But any brand owners knows that even bad publicity is better than no publicity and the fakes actually add to the desirability of the product because once sonmeone has a fake, they get used to be associated with the brand and will typically, later aspire to owning the real thing. Challenges for the brand owner are that they need to maintain their brand equity and value adn this is done usually through increasing exclusivity; fewer approved distributors and retailers, elaborate warranty registration and generally better service. going the legal route it difficutl because there are so many fakes out there including, presidents, interpreters, cars, clothing, sunglasses,, appliances the lines between grey fake and real are completely blurred. To prove something is a genuine fake is really very hard. Best you cna prove is that is just not an approved por official factory release since often manufacture of goods is not conducted by one factory but at least two or three and often those factories will sell of rejects, especially if that factory is in China
  12. I have had similar issues with certain goods I brough tback from Europe when I returned to SA some years ago. A case in point being a Compex Energy EMS which I bought at Perry Sports in Den Haag. I recently needed to have the units battery replaced and the on board memory battery. I called up the SA distributor and they refused to take it despite it being a genuine unit. I emailed Compex and they sated that the distributor is their representative and that I should talk to a decision maker. I did call back and spoke to the branch manager who apologised and we made arrangements for my unit to be serviced. The problem arose because she said there are people who buy these units abroad, thinking its cheaper, but end up with units that are marked not suitable for our market and htey are unable to work on them due to language settings, or programming differences. They consider these units grey imports. So back you to your PInarello, as a distributor ASG should be linked into the Pinarello factory serial nuber database and they can check whether it is a grey or a genuine fake. If the serial number is not on their listed on imported frames but is on the factories, then its grey. If its on neither databases then its fake an dyou were sold a lemon.
  13. generally I avoid Maxxis tyres. That usually solves the problem. The other culprit is Specialized. Not sure why these don't like ammonia. I use Hutchinson, Continental and Michelin. None have had a problem with Ammonia based sealants. Vredestein and Kenda was also trouble free
  14. there are really good BS artists working in bike shops. they could sell their own grandmother. I have seen people walk into a shop armed with information but that slaeman just turns them around and before they know it they lapping it up and walk out with a bike they didn't think they needed. A good salesman can hide those fake features easily through any of the following. - its a slightly tweaked model for our market.. - they made a running change and this is the ver latest model - all of last years models had that, we can discount the price a little <shuffles off to play with calculator>
  15. match the rake to the fork you have. Full carbon is better than carbon legs alu steerer since carbon bonds to carbon better than it bonds to aluminium. its will be a stronger fork. Good brands are: Easton Look Enve the Easton will be the easiest to source and be available in more options for rake. <Correction> i see on their website the EC90SL in 1&1/8 or tapered is the only carbon option and in 43mm rake. some options: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/za/en/forks/road-forks
  16. I was thinking more along the lines of 0.22 and hollow point
  17. No one likes the guy who turns in the drug dealer..... just saying..
  18. Crickets seem to be a Western Cape problem this summer. Kudos to the Epic organisers as well. First time in a long time I bothered to follow the event. Save for a few hiccups it lived up to the standard and the racing was pretty good this year too.
  19. Find a shoemaker. Most of the them have the tools and skills to recover. I've used the Barksole in Plumstead to recover an Arione. Its still going strong
  20. L indicates its a Black shoe. W would mean Black and White S would mena Black and Silver. E could be that is it from the European Distribution and sized accordingly. As far as I know, all the M088 range is a wide toe box shoe
  21. WTF 11 pages already! Hectic people, no wonder our legal systems does not work very well. Everybody overthinking. stick to the facts> Man buys bike he thinks is the real thing Man discovers bike is not, but is rather a fake article. Man is peeved at being taken for a ride Man warns others. Next step is for man to take it further with the autorities yet all the high powered advocates on the Hubs need to seek clarity on the case Jirre April fools is 24 hours too long
  22. Yeah Maybe oneday when he writes an autobiography called "Life as the super domestique" we'l get the uncensored version of partnering with Sauser.... what an interesting read that will be. toys throw cots out
