    29er Dh Bikes????

I find it amusing how quickly EVERY manufacturer has a 29'er prototype, from a month or two back before Greg's team mentioned it.
  2. I alternate - Mon/Wed is crossfit, Tue/Thu is spinning. I think I'd be able to follow spinning with crossfit on the same day, but not the other way around - I wouldn't be able to do the spinning/cycling workout at a useful intensity (depending on the crossfit workout of course). For example, tonight is Weights Wednesday, so usually less intense but heavier weights. Unless its heavy deadlifts, I might survive a cycling workout after that. On another night, when we have some insane AMRAP workout, I'm happy just to make it to my car without crawling, a cycling workout after that would be a complete waste of time.
  3. I go twice a week, Mon and Wed. Started last year March, post-Argus, and progress is slow, but least it is there. No idea of my times for the few named workouts I've done, too busy dying to remember to check the clock... Only one I'm sure about is deadlift: 140kg Clean: about 80kg? Snatch: 55kg-ish? Ego was left at the door from just about the first class, after we sat watching some guy at the early class do a 110kg snatch and making it look easy - I couldn't deadlift that then. The coolest feeling so far though has been watching my wife manage her first few kipswings, and this Monday her very first double-under
  4. I finally got fed up with the Continentals I had on, after having to stop a few times on a 33km ride to pump the rear. Sidewalls of sieves! Back to Maxxis, that gave me no issues for years on my old 26er. Ikon 29x2.2, front and rear (hopefully I don't regret that decision, as I see lots of people recommend a 2.4 Ardent up front...), and I'm already hopeful - after inflating them last night, the rear was still inflated and that is WITHOUT sealant. Just need to figure out where the slow leak is on the front, add some sealant to both, and my tubeless setup should be how tubeless should be - trouble free.
  5. Polar does sync to Vitality, so yes on that. For cycling, I'm not sure if it can connect to external sensors such as speed/cadence, but it does have a cycling mode so if that is sufficient for you then yes on that too. I use my TomTom watch while cycling - for road riding its simply there for Vitality (Bryton on my handlebars), for MTB I ride only with the watch on my wrist.
  6. Ah, fair enough! I don't have experience of either (or any recent road Shimano group, tbh), so no idea how they compare in terms of that.
  7. I can't find the specs for the cluster of either... If both offer a max 25 at the back, for example, I'd say its pointless to spend R1400 extra just for one extra cog on the Expert. You could always go for the cheaper one now, and buy a used 105 or Ultegra groupset later here on the hub Personally, I'd choose between the Sport (Claris) and the Comp (Tiagra). Bigger jump in price, yes, but also better brakes, wheels, tyres, and 10spd drivetrain. Plus I like the colour on the Comp more... But again, as a few have said, any of these would be good enough to ride the 94.7 or Argus. I did my first Argus on a secondhand Alpina with 6 or 7 speed shifters on the downtube, and enjoyed the ride.
  8. The only real difference between the two seems to be that the Sport has Shimano Claris (2x8) versus the Expert with Shimano Sora (2x9). I don't know if the Sora works/feels significantly better than the Claris, but I'd think either would do the job just fine.
  9. There was a Tomtom Runner 2 being advertised this morning for a decent price. New, Takealot has the Runner 2 Cardio for an ok price as well. Doesn't have the most features ever, but pretty easy to use and syncs to Vitality. Edit: also a Garmin 35 advertised this morning.
  10. Even if you haven't reached 30k (I haven't), there is some limit on points from steps, for Vitality points anyway. For example, mine from yesterday:
  11. The steps should still count for Active Rewards points, just not the normal Vitality points, I think?
  12. To shake your arm enough to count for 10k steps will at a minimum give you one fairly toned arm Plus, with the points goal increasing all the time, shaking the watch won't be enough pretty soon. More seriously though, I think it is more a limitation due to not every device giving a minimum amount of information. If every linked device reported a minimum of HR and steps (and GPS as a bonus), it would be easier to catch out cheats. Last night's crossfit was tough, quite a few muscles complaining today, but my average HR wasn't high enough to get any points for the workout. But at least I got enough steps to get some points.
  13. No doubt. Or for a run - pitiful speed, HR through the roof. I guess the speed will only be useful should something go wrong with your HR monitor on the day and measures low/nothing.
  14. I have only had mine for about two months so I have no idea whether it will be used to penalise you later ito premium etc, but I have found I definitely drive a bit more carefully knowing I'll lose points/stars... I now know a certain stretch of road here is actually 60km/h, instead of the 80 I thought it was, for example <grumble>
  15. Well, on the Discovery site does show the following for some of my workouts: Speed 10.12 km/hr Higher points awarded for fitness for the day. So, it does look as if the speed could be useful in some cases. Probably not worth replacing your HR-only watch for though, as at the speed that would count for higher points your heart-rate will probably be high enough anyway.
  16. Appears it is actually true, couple of places have articles about it now. https://www.bikerumor.com/2017/05/09/campagnolo-debuts-hydraulic-disc-brakes-way-affordable-potenza-11-alloy-groupset/
  17. That should work out to about R1800 VAT included, but excluding any additional import tax (if applicable)? The Tomtom Runner 2 Cardio was on special a few days ago on Takealot for about R1990, though it doesn't have the music feature or notifications of this Xiaomi (the one with both music and cardio is more expensive). It looks quite nice. If it can indeed sync to Strava (reliably), it could be a very good buy. If you don't use Vitality. Not sure about that claimed battery life though, when using GPS... the Bryton cycling computers claim roughly the same battery life, but are significantly chunkier.
  18. As she's used your Garmin, I assume she's got a garmin connect account? In which case the easiest option is probably to just stick with Garmin, and not have yet another account. The Runner 3 Cardio and FR35 are similar enough in terms of features for it to not really matter. I am very happy with my Runner 2 Cardio+Music (easier to use than my wife's FR225 in my opinion, mostly due to the Tomtom having different sport options that enable or disable GPS, versus having to do it manually. Not applicable to newer Garmins of course). I do suspect the promised notifications feature won't be added soon (if ever). Doesn't bother me at all, but some people want it.
  19. If anyone might be interested, I see the Tomtom Runner 2 Cardio is available on Takealot for a smidge less than R2000 today. Previous gen, but for the price it is good - it has multisport mode, and links to Vitality well enough
  20. It doesn't go straight to the respective page's Dashboard anymore. Which is an odd design choice. Then you have to use the menu to go to where you wanted to go in the first place.
  21. I added about 800m last week when I saw I needed an extra minute or so, I thought it would be enough yesterday. I was struggling with my breathing, so the last thing I expected was to be faster. Same route today was three minutes slower, so back to being a slowpoke but points in the virtual bag I'm not sure my Tomtom has a lap feature, will check it out
  22. Ai! Went for a run this afternoon (instead of the road ride I had planned, to avoid the It's Time traffic), got a PB 5km, heart-rate 164bpm avg.... but the total time was a few seconds less than thirty minutes so no points. That'll teach me
  23. Well, for one my wife dislikes a HRM chest strap enough that the lure of free smoothies couldn't get her to wear it. For her the Garmin 225 (old and on special in Feb) I got her works perfectly. And also, for certain activities (like crossfit), I'd rather risk my secondhand Tomtom cardio than my smartphone. I don't NEED to track it..... but I like to Edit: but I do agree, for most sports and people a phone and bluetooth HRM strap is more than enough, especially with today's glued-to-the-phone generation.
  24. You could also look at the new Lezyne Super GPS? (no silver bezel, has "ENHANCED" on the front). Doesn't have the same battery life as the 530/330, but appears to have pretty much all the same features, plus some cool features in their app (including Strava segments if you are so inclined). Price seems roughly the same as the 530. I've currently got an old Bryton Rider 20, but their recent leap to a work-in-progress new website with a quarter of the features of the old one, and the rather work-in-progress new app, has me considering other options. The tracking feature will also give my wife some extra peace of mind.
  25. I just spoke to a colleague whose husband runs the Two Oceans every year. They've already cancelled their leave. They are not willing to risk their safety and the large expense on hopefully not having a repeat of the protests. I understand that there was little choice but cancel the event. You can only reroute so many times, you can only delay so much. It was a nice breakaway, and we visited family that we don't see that frequently. My only real concern is if I (and everyone who has to drive far and stay over for the event) can trust that the chances of more such protests affecting the event next year are slim.
