  1. Anybody know what time the ride will begin?
  2. Last 4 weeks TSS: 724 577 580 466
  3. Can't agree with that, according to TMNP own website: Funding The TMNP has various sources of funds the primary agencies being South African National Parks (SANParks) and the City of Cape Town. When the TMNP was established in 1998 it was funded internationally by the Washington-based Global Environmental Facility (GEF). This was a six-year tranche of funding dedicated to start-up costs and alien clearing. Another source of early funding was the French Fonds Francais Pour L'Environnement (FFEM). Now both tranches of international funding have been successfully spent and the Park has moved onto funding projects through a three-year Expanded Public Works grant from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. Working for Water, an Expanded Public Works Programme administered by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) funds the TMNP's alien clearing initiatives. If I am paying for an mtb specific permit, I beleive I am entitled (yes, that word) to an mtb specific service. That is certainly not offered by mtb specific trails, so perhaps it should take the form of mtb specific security? As for cost, also from TMNP website re revenue generated: Economic Facts and Figures A recent study (2004) by UCT’s Graduate School of Business (GSB) shows that over the last six financial years, TMNP has made a contribution of R377 million to SA’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of which around R132 million as gone into the Western Cape province. It wouldn't take much of that R132 million to make the mountain a lot safer for everybody. But, the fact that TMNP refers to a study from 2004 as "recent" is a pretty good indicator that they may be a little out of touch, and very low on will, to do anything constructive.

Marquez was reminded of what every Spaniard knows: If you keep messing with the bull, eventually you get the horn.
  5. Once had to saw one up using a small hacksaw blade held by hand. Took about 2 days. I don't recommend it.
  6. Errr....Any of them from what i've read...
  7. My understanding is that alu is heat treated after welding to de stress the material. I think it's practically impossible to repair? Any metallurgists/welders/engineers/frame builders have the facts?
  8. Tend to agree - I find my Solaris to be quite harsh for a steel bike over small stuff, but when it 'activates' after a bigger hit, it soaks it up beautifully. Front end is a bit too vague for my taste, there's a definite hesitation on turn in and it moves around when the steering loads up. I did this years Trans Karoo on my new Niner Air9 Carbon. Apart from being nearly 3kg lighter (not all in the frame, as specs were not identical), it was faster, more comfortable and more predictable. It steers faster, yet is more stable and confidence inspiring on more tech singletrack too. Caveat - There is a huge price gap...
  9. Haaa, he seems to be following me about these days.

  12. Jeff Novitsky crashes the party and blows Lance's candles out.
  13. Had proper flu 2 weeks before Trans Karoo, felt awful during the race and had my worst day ever on a bike. Started feeling better about a week after, 2 weeks ago rode in the fog on TM and have been battling an URTI ever since. I got so frustrated being off the bike that I rode on Saturday, and just hammered it. Now I'm coughing up lumps of rubber and feel like death warmed up. Should have learned by now.
  14. If you are a mountainbiker (especially German or Swiss) you always go Full Gas...
  15. Damping & rebound control? I remember early elastomer suspensions (front & rear), the only time the damping and rebound changed was when it was cold out.
  16. There was the Ibis BowTi and the simpler SilkTi from the early 90's. Moots still make the YBB.
  17. Kutiman - Black Dog - Not better, just way cool.
  18. Oops. Why is pic not showing.

  20. It's bad for your health. After the fires here, if I catch you lighting up at the side of the road, you're getting a slap.
  21. Thunder rolling into Hout Bay and it's started to rain proper. Lets hope it buckets down and puts a halt to this.
  22. I live and work in Hout Bay. Fire is creeping down the mountain towards houses... Less smoke around than yesterday though. I think the wind (what little there is now) has shifted back towards noordhoek. We all have red eyes and sore throats from the smoke I went for a short ride this morning, not pleasant, difficult to breathe properly. It's 42degC today, I think a bit of greenhouse effect. Rain forecast for tomorrow, which will be great for the Fire Services - who are doing epic work by the way. I remember some years back when we had those really big fires, I rode Cape Point route the day after the rains came and helped to extinguish the fires. It was like riding through some desolate lunar landscape, and we all got completely covered in wet black ash.
  23. When they advertise beer based on how cold it is, you know it's pretty s**t beer.
  24. Locally. Bridge Cycles in Cape Town had a few pairs.
