  1. It is The SA Topo map is a digitised version (++) of exactly those Surveyor General (whatever the new entity is called) maps. The DEM actually carry elevation data on each 'pixel'. OK let's get back on track...
  2. "Elevation databases In the past, we consulted public elevation databases to determine the elevation at each point in the activity. The resolution of these databases varied based on location and we were not able to control for the many errors in these databases. We now have an elevation look-up service powered by data from the Strava community. Each activity that is uploaded from a device with a barometric altimeter is used to build the new Strava elevation basemap. " Somehow I trust the Garmin TOPO SA mapset more, as I have seen many errors with the Strava basemap. PS : What did your ascent show before the elevation correction - IIRC the 920 XT uses a barometer?
  3. Of course there are many other events with huge climbs, but the intention of my post was to compare two races of similar distances in the Pta/Jhb area, call it friendly rivalry if you like (BTW LUT's real ascent seems to be 2438m? )
  4. Tough One vs. Sunrise Monster: Tough One Total Ascent: 521m:Sunrise Monster Total Ascent: 753m(Measurements taken from TOPO / DEM maps based on Surveyor General maps, and not from elevation data in Strava etc)
  5. Cecil's last recorded ride: https://www.strava.com/activities/1279774637 I might be mistaken but I guess he took the same route again on Sunday, as I believe the attack took place somewhere in this area. This should be a no-go area for MTB's. (This is not the first attack in this area)
  6. Hi Cobus It went well thanks, I managed to run according to plan A bit stiff this am, I must say!
  7. https://rekordcenturion.co.za/132653/newsflash-body-man-found-irene-farm-village/ Friend of mine Details are sketchy at the moment, but it seems Cecil was killed for his cell and bike
  8. Cobus, thanks again for the hot tip re the parking!
  9. Is it here? (If it is, it is also recommended by the organisers as a convenient parking place - ref to info page in reg pack)
  10. How did the e-bike (and rider) do in the 94.7? (Read something about it in the little magazine we received at registration.)
  11. Don't disregard Charne Bosman & Elana Lyubtsova.
  12. Hi Dave - I am no speed merchant, it is 4:12, but I hope to get under 4h end January. (I ran a 1:42 half mar a couple of weeks ago)
  13. I suppose it differs from person to person - for ME it is working wonderfully. No wall hitting, no nothing. Can do up to 50 km (running) on only water, no carb loading etc. If you want more we can continue on email should you wish.
  14. I am on a LCHF plan. (Since Jul 2016)
  15. Saartjies : 1,25km 77m climb (Old route) Kommandonek : 930m 51m climb (New route) (Don't forget about the little kicker from the river to the R560, going on to Kommandonek.) The new route seems to have approx 75m more ascent than previously. (Due to the last 1.5 km or so uphill to the finish.) (~600 vs ~680m)
  16. So ODD is now run in a clockwise direction, with a new starting point @ Hartbeespoort Holiday Resort, N of the dam. This is a rough draft I did from the avail info on the website. The exact route through Schoemansville is not known to me and could actually drop down to the dam at an earlier point than indicated on my map. Who is joining me? Entries halfway already to cap apparently.
  17. BF : Two or three eggs, and a mug of coffee. During - nothing, only water occasionally.
  18. Remember if you do the Tough One + 94.7 you qualify for a third medal as well.
  19. From personal experience - don't take a groin injury lightly. If you have pain lifting your leg (e.g. when standing) you have probably overcooked it. (It cost me approx a year of running due to me 'neglecting' the injury, including a Comrades ) (I had to up the core + ex to manage the issue )

  21. Specific e-bike races will be good for R&D. As mentioned - only as a separate race or cat like in: http://bhsouthafrica.co.za/south-africas-1st-electric-bicycle-e-bike-race/
  22. Anybody who did the 94.7 & RAC 32km Tough One in the past? From the RAC entry form I see there is a 'Sweat Shop Challenge' where one can get a 'combined medal'? Thanks
