  1. I notice according to the rules, any help from friends is disallowed, esp, getting food. As with drafting in EL, I notice lots of participants were getting lots of handout from the public, presumably family and friends. I need a fresh warm boerewors on each cycle lap, how can I pull this one off without offending the referee..my friends will erect a tent with braai no doubt.
  2. Tried IDT, only used it twice..total boring, not to mention having to have a spare wheel. Spinning can be be better, again the gears are somewhat not reflective of reality..Always amaze myself how I can 10min standing on a spinning bike, and can hardly do 1min on a real bike, Personally I have a 1.5km gentle uphill in my area that i use, 6 times up and down gives a better work out that 90min on a spinning bike. Takes me 50min to do 6 laps..My philosophy is that uphills need training, flats and downhills will take care of themselves...I could be wrong in the eyes of purists

I am stunned...........utterly and adequate so......A lesson to wannabe cyclist with modest enough talent....Cheat so long as you do not win, then you won't be investigated..and you can have a descent career, if you can provide evidence against the perennial winner of cycle races..this will place in good stead, and probably even away from prosecution for your testimony is "priceless" I get the picture... Even dead former greats are no so immune, chances are they need to be dug up...INSANE this..never failed a single drug (s) test..NEVER

No doubt, the investigating officer will have something to work with.Just to be certain, I would give the guy a call, as an interested customer, find out how old is the bike, how much he is paying for insurance, if not insured, ask him if he has an original invoice as you wish to have it insured...from this discussion you can tell if he bought the bike from a thief, of if he is a thief himself.

  6. Gumtree is the answer, I am not too sure if you save some time, certainly the energy expenditure is less with a wetsuit. I hope you are not considering an outlay of R40k on a proper TT bike to make up 4 minutes on your standad bike
  7. 100% agreed, to this day I refuse to buy a heart rate monitor, I average 28km/h during training and then up it by 4km/h during races, clearly my adrenalin must be on turbo during races. In short I listen to the body on race days, but match the pace setter on training days

On the contrary, I admit I am a poor looking hubber and henceforth am scared to cross paths with Hubbers, if I happen to have nice looking bike, whether mine, on loan, borowwed Vavi protested life style audits, I don't he's made much progress, if (rich) hubbers want to succeed where he's failed, I might consider voting for them, then again my income status might make my vote undesireable to those hubbers. Also, Yes I do have an eye for cheap things, 10 months, I noticed a CEO of one of the tv companies in the country riding an RC2000, aluminium frame nog al. What do we do there then.....Hubbers? I could stomach all this the fact he was in in a D group,and I went passed him on the 9th KM, riding all the way from the H group, now that got me frothing at the mouth.

Well if a farm supplies contaminated stock of cattle to a butcher, then a reasonable person ought to expect that few if not many of cows would test positive for the illegal drug ingested by one Senyor Contador..right? ( assuming that the right farm was inspected, containing a population of cattle from which a sampple stock was supplied to the said butcher, who then supplied Senyor Contador's chief chef with meat ) Apparently the bulls and cows in question are innocent of illegal drug taking, which makes Senyor Contador...(well not so innocent in the eyes of an impartial hubber like me) The mystery continues.....

Jammer hubbers, I missed all the Afrikaans version of your contribution, be that as it may, my take though is that, we can't forever live in the past, and sooner it's going to be unfashionable to blame everything on "apartheid", thus the nation needs to forge ahead, and so do the arts, culture sport, artifects, national symbols, flags etc, etc. We have made progress in some and less so perhaps on rewriting the history books. In other words what of the past do we embrace and carry forward, as we can't carry all the baggage with (HF Verwoed, Barend strydom etc, they belong in the past) What I am sensing and seeing is here is a lot of emotions, an little substance, the question is What contribution has Oom Paul done to the nation, if he is such an icon, then he deserves to be carried forward in to the future, so long as there is concensus among the citizens. Thus he ought to stand erect and watchful over the square If on the other hand, taking him forward does fokol in terms nation building, and there are more deserving icons and nation builders, past and present, then, jammer Oom can't stand erect forever, something gotta give. ANCYL are emotinal juggernauts, hellbent on getting airtime and promoting self interest at the expense of everyone, particulay anyone who dares to differ with them. I am yet to get an explantion why Oom Paul is suddenly undeserving to be looking over the square, other than Hani needs to be. No doubt we found it necessafy to have Beyers Naude acknowleged, as past historians (The Nats) were very selective and perhaps if sufficient reason is found...may be Oom need to go.

  12. Fellow Hubbers I notice most of us ride for fun and only ocasionally do races. I plan to do IM next year and hubbers recommend I get myself 50mm deep section wheels, I have no doubt other IM enthusiast are even considering investing in a full TT bike with all the bells and whistles. Rather than putting up the capital to purchase all these goodies for once event, would hubbers onsider renting if someone took all the trouble to facilitating this service i.e stock piling racing wheels, full bikes for travelling bikers (local or abroad) TT bars during IM season etc. If so instead of buying a R10,000 deep section wheel set how much would anyone pay to rent them for one race weekend instead of making a full purchase. Just a though, if we're comfortable with the idea of car rental, why not cycle rental?
  13. ..Not to mention running helps you rider faster uphill..by peeling off the weight and redcung your body fat % far quicker that cycling can. I notice sizeable weight loss running that I do with cycling...not comparing the two disciplines, I recommend running as a supplement to your cycling, as for loss of speed on the bike due to running, I'd argue perhaps at Elite level this might be a concern but as for an average hubber..RUN. It's cheaper, simpler, safer and SLOWER

Valid points you raise, I got 2nd hand bike set up by Solomons in Woodmead, it felt uncomfortable I decided to take it to Cycle Lad Fourways, needless to say, the set was significantly different from Solomons..so if two reputable bike shops can't agree on set up, what chance do you have getting it right 1st time, esp, with bike manufacturers using hym books for bike measurements. "Insist on having the bike fitted....expense of the seller", I am not sure I'd be prepared to fund the buyer's lack of knowledge next time I sell my bike, One must inspect and try out the bike beforehand, perhaps ask to take it out for a spin on the track, then again Hubbers are bargain hunters...spread across the 9 provinces....how practical are some of the points raised above...I dunno.

Have not watched SC however on a cycling programme on DSTV with Andrew Mclean as a guest, there is general consensus that syndicates appear to be operating across borders.I do occasionally drive across townships, and am yet to a come a cross descent bike on the street, it's all the entry level stuff from Makro you get to see. With tracking technology out there, is there no way micro chips could be use to track these things, if letters could be tracked why can't expensive bikes, as this could uncover the kingpins fast. Otherwise I am no fan of guns..again riding in numbers has to be the best preventative measure at current, that's why I am still sticking with the roadies...nearly got my behind shaved by a taxi once...riding solo thou...since then I am serial groupie

Daily nutrition intake is what I consider standard, i.e. two slices of toast with full cream coffee for breakfast..lunch and supper very much similar in that I have starch (rice) two veges ( different colours) and white meat ( 300g). for snacking I personally abuse red apples. Little adjustment can be quite helpful, for instance we had a Chaywa machine at work that dispenses various drinks for free. It didn't take long for the ladies to start moaning about their figures that googled calorie difference between coffee and cappucino, I challenge you to do the same, since then I have never had cappucino more than three times in a month. Coffee is fantastic, defers the hunger pangs at minimal calorie intake ( instead of choc bar) I have taken out king steer burgers, KFC etc, and be careful of fruit drinks such as Liqui fruit, appletiser etc. check the calorie intake on those goodies, they're just as bad as the likes of coke, fanta etc. I love my coke, then again in modeation it's fine. A night before my saturday ride, I don't mind vanilla ice creams, ciders etc, because I know the uphills will burn off quite a bit of those calories, it's probaly the only day, i.e. friday night that I do not mind being a pig, all other days I am a good boy. It's really just being pragmatic, I do a 45 min spinning twice a week at most, what I notice is people brining 750ml energade and powerade bottles, all this for a mere 45min of spinning...if you ask me, that's an overkill in my opinion.
  19. Eating less is all good and well, and naturally eating less helps ( calorie deficit as hubbers assert). Problem with emphasizing diet is that calorie info is not always at your finger tips. Canteen food does not come with calorie certificates, neither does King steer burger or 13.5% glass of semi sweet red wine drank with peanuts and and a bite on a kudu biltong. This is what works for me. Much as I am reasonably careful with what I eat, I use training as a currency to purchase credits. Credits that come to my rescue for that extra wine glass I drink or the chocolate bar I munch. This for me creates mental balance needed to consistently keep a balance life style, without creating a log book of what I ate or creating panic and/or guilty feeling of being lagging behind with calorie tracking. Cardio vs strengh training Cycling, spinning or running are great for cardio, also they switch on your metabolism to burn off that chocolate bar you had 72 hrs ago. However what cardio is not great at is switching on your metabolism for longer periods, and that's where strengh training is great at. By creating demand for repair and recovery work on the body, this essentially switches on the metabolism for longer periods which in turn needs calories to do the repair work and this in turn creates a potential calorie deficit without you drastically altering your normal eating habits (assuming you're reasonable with the both quantity and quality of foods you ingest) Running vs cycling It's no conincidence that triathletes look a lot in shape than your average gym enthusiast. I am currently averaging 160kms per week of cycling and my body fat is around 16-17% and am carrying on average 2 kg more than I normally do. Here is the difference, it's winter and I am not running. Come triathlon season around October, and I will gradually introduce an additional running regime of around 30-40 kms per week (made up of hills and flat), I will loose about a further 4-5% in body fat and weight 2-3 kg less consistently for about 8 months, and this is achieved without altering my eating habits by much. The key though is concsistency, embark on a regime you're likely to stick to, quick fixes create anxiety and confusion to your body, and the body dislikes starvation....so rather work around the the quality of training whilst keeping the body well fed, it creates a better balance both physiologically and psycologically needed for you keep well balnced life style

  21. Agreed, get lucky with the wife, it's cheaper, better, faster way to get you to bed. No side effects associated with pills etc.
  22. I am a pragmatic, recreational average triathlete, that could do with some advice from fellow hubbers. I do much of my cycling training on a normal road bike but feel am loosing outto TT boys during triathlon events. I plan to do full and half Ironman next year. Owning two bikes is out of the question hence my dilemma. Is is better to continue with current road bike with make shift tribars or could it possible to purchase a tri-frame that can be used as a road bike for training (after replacing tribars with normal handlebars) or is there a combo bike out there that one could look into. A improvement of 5 min or more (on 90km race) would be considered significant.
