  1. Only Einstein and Ghandi were influential...the rest were just famous. Ok, perhaps Al Gore as well....
  2. I hear you GoG We sometimes resist change because our logic says different. I cannot see myself driving a Renault because the fenders are plastic, but yet the numbers call it one of the safest cars on the road. The biggest issue I see with this helmet is proper cooling for my noggin
  3. Cardboard bike helmet could revolutionize head safety As highlighted by the cardboard bicycle, cardboard can be a surprisingly versatile manufacturing material in the right hands. Further proof of this comes via the Kranium: a bicycle helmet constructed from cardboard and designed by Royal College of Art student Anirudha Surabhi, which promises to be 15 percent lighter than standard helmets, while absorbing up to three times the impact energy during a collision.
  4. Go play golf with the doctor...it helps relieve the frustration In all honesty, you probably will not have the "wind" to train in any case. It is amazing how everything gets affected by your heart, apart from the obvious "duh, if it stops you die" My dad had a light heart attack two months ago, and he breathes very hard after a flight of stairs. It also caused an unstable angina, any time his heart rate goes up it causes massive chest pains. He is of bread to stop bad indigestion from causing the stomach to expand with gas and restrict space in his chest cavity. Listen to the doc, or go for a second opinion. the result should be the same...but then you can listen to two docs I wish you a speedy and full recovery.
  5. This is the one we ride most. If you ride to Patensie it is about 50 km one way wit brekkie at Patensie and the wife picks you up. You can also find a gravel road that turns off close to the the circle on the R102 heading to the N2. This road is about 6 km of arouns 3-4% downhill and joins the gravel road at Kabeljauws. I have heard of a track the motorbikers use that turns off the Kabeljauws gravel road at the waterfall and ends up at Mondplaas, but I have not tried it. Speak to Josua at Jbay Cycles for other group rides. The Jbay Bike park is nice, three loops varying from 3,5 km to 8 km with some good climbing. The entry covers the whole day, and they have the basic coffee/burger/snacky kind of chow available. Longmore is also a good climbing place, but is about 35-ish minutes away from Jbay. You can drive to St Francis and chat to the dude that runs the bike shop at the Spar center....they also have a track there that they ride, or you can hop on the district roads and cycle to Oyster bay and back. For the roadbike I ride to Humansdorp from Jbay, as the road has a shoulder for us to use....sometimes when I am strong I head through Humansdorp to the circle at the St Francis links, which is about 60 km on the road with 450-ish meters of ascent. Before you get excited though...I am a very social and larger than life 40% fit cyclist, so a 10 year old on a BMX will outride me. I have some monster mates though I ride about 27km of district roads every second day, and do about 250m climbing, so no hardcore.
  6. Possibly because not all of us have mastered the art of unceremonious dismounts like you
  7. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151279562307432 Classical musical instruments made out of rubbish....well worth watching
  8. I could join you for the Jbay park, but I am very very very very far from pro....I do gather some real momentum downhill though. I have a mate who is a monster, came third at a recent Longmore event, so if you give us a date I might get him to join so you snakes can go play in the bush whilst I putter around and drink coffee/beer I am also keen on having a look at the 17th, sounds like fun
  9. There is a big V12 badge on the back....
  10. You don't ask, you drive
  11. If you ask any car enthusiast "What is the sexiest car ever made?" The answer will always be "E-Type Jag" This thing in that condition is extremely rare and valuable. I went to the Eastern Cape Classic Car show two weekends ago, probably about 100 classic cars and only two e-types. The more you stare, the better they look. But that said, Jaguar has always managed to make their cars look sexy
  12. Cheap coffee give me wind too
  13. That would be too prophetic the way I ride
  14. As in "husband stealing whore", not "madam of the house" Nyatsi is the derogatory term married Zulu women use to describe whores. Call any Zulu girl a nyatsi and you will be bladed.
  15. Tho am I, but I thtill wouldn't mind having thex oneth more
  16. With gatorskins I average 1 puncture every two weeks. Put Vredesteins on and had one puncture in their lifetime, then put on serfas and have had only one puncture in the last two years. I carry levers, multitool, tube, patches, 2x bombs with adapter and hand pump. All in a saddle bag.
  17. Doing Johan's course will teach you not only how to rebuild wheels, but also the cause and effect of certain actions during the build. This will help you prevent issues up ahead. And you have a cheap rimes to practice on
  18. Bike was 3 months old from new....so, no old timer spokes I might concede bad tensioning, but the wheels were true Was busy polishing one of the guitars I built whilst the sun was rising over the sea. Heard the ping as the spoke snapped. I knew it was that because I had moved the bike out of my way a hour earlier and it was fine. I trust Josh at my LBS, he has reliably gotten most of the local participants through the Trans Baviaans for a few years now.
  19. My MTB was breaking spokes standing in the morning sun, about 3 cm from the nipple (not even riding it). Dude at LBS said the black spokes are more prone to snapping. (he was replacing a spoke every two or three days) He rebuilt the wheels and replaced all the spokes and I have not snapped a spoke yet. Get your wheels rebuilt, and if they are cheap wheels then get newer better wheels as a rebuild is not a cheap option. I was lucky, it cost me R 600 for both wheels.
