Offroad King Cleaner works great. Cajees is now selling this, It is like Cleen Green but not corosive. Also gets bike very clean especialy casette and chain. Been using it for a while now.
Had the same with my bike 500m into the mud and had to turn back because of the mud, also had specialize the Captain on as well. Had exactly the same at the Illovo Eston this year, on rout for the first 20km had to carry the bike and keep cleaning it.
Most probably it will work quicker, we only found out when we got to the Hilton 50 miler, as we cleaned the drive train and the mist (as it was hooked up to the compressor) went all over, even though the bikes was washed afterwards.
Your brakes won't take immediately because it will slip as you said it is oil based, and then it becomes noisy. If you brake hard you will just slow daw and not brake as quick as you want to. Takes a bit of riding on your brakes to get rid of the oil lair.

At least I did 3 Laps, started getting ready for the night ride and to make some food, then the storm came. Had the same when they opened the track again, 500m in the mud and had to turn back, will try and load pic later. After bike is cleaned one can stil hear the sand grinding, will have to strip and grease again. Now I can put on my new drive train set.
