  1. Get a carbon fiber saddle. The kind with no padding. Never had rash or shaff since I have had it. Even after 9 hours of riding (in one sitting) Just one downside. Super long rides leave you very tender and somewhat bruised. But it is so worth it! Also, never wear the same clothes twice without washing them. The amount of germs left in your sweaty shorts plays havoc with your body on your next ride and if your skin is a bit worn you are just asking for an infection. Some people recon that you should sun dry your clothes after washing as the sun kills most of the germs. Woofie2009-05-13 05:15:48
  2. I have heard that some people use 10 speed chains on 9 speed gears or the other way around. What is the actual difference between 10 and 9 speed? Is the 9 speed gears slightly wider? Are the teeth spacings the same? Reason why I am asking I still have 9 speed (105) on my road bike and I would like to upgrade it one day to something lighter - ultegra or dura ace. I am happy with the 9 gears ratio and all and I have a sram cassette at the back PG970 I think? What would the biggest weight saver be for me in a component upgrade? In my mind it may be the crankset because this isnt hollowtech. Could I take a 10 speed dura ace crankset and use it at the front with my current derailer and chain? Any ideas ?
  3. Nope, almost did. But I was thankful when I saw it starting to rain just after 6. SMS friend to say im baling and back to bed. Did ride this morning however. Left home in the rain, but it did dry up a bit. Was quite nice, was more people there than I expected. MKD bailed on us though - he was rather going to meet some Jim guy Oh, my friend that lent the chain tool to you was David, he ended up breaking his chain by west coast village going through the robot. We eventually caught the group again in melkbos. Was a hard push to make up the time!
  4. No, I think it belonged to Shane - he used to work at lifecycle. I was next to him on the gary fisher. You have a pretty awesome bike. How do you like using a double chainring? I think the outies are riding at 7.30 tomorrow from the shop if you are keen to join. I will try to be there. Ill go on my road bike.
  5. Hey, I was one of the guys that stopped to help with the broken chain. It is nice to meet other hubbers on rides!

    Marriage

Awesome. My wife must not see this...
  7. Where are you based?
  8. Ive done this before ......... twice I swore after the first time that I would never forget it again. For the first race, I just went home, on the second race I wondered why I never heard the beep beep to look down in horror at my empty leg. What a bummer. That is one quick way to demotivate you for your ride. Half way through the ride I decided to pull out of my slum and I made a huge solo effort to catch the next group in front of me. About 25 min later just as I caught them I got a flat and my previous group went past me. God was obviously teaching me something I normally also carry two spare tubes with me on rides and on the burger I only had one tube. I thought it would all be fine until I got a flat in my starting pen. After rushing the repair and half inflating my tire I started 3 groups late. I then rushed off to my car - having already started - finished pumping with my foot pump - and then I had to get back to the race. By this time the next group had already come and gone. I pushed myself stupid to try and catch up and I eventually managed to finish very well in my group despite my huge time penalty. I can now see the value in two tubes and two bombs.
  9. Last year at the argus expo I was brave enough to buy a polished carbon fiber saddle. Got it for only R500. It only weighs in at 136 grams, but I do start cursing it on long rides. One upside though is I get absolutely no chaff from it. Just bruises from super long rides. Oh well.
  10. ah, that makes some sense. Ive been wondering whats happening

    Koeberg

Going to be riding koeberg tomorrow morning at 7. It will be cool if anyone wants to join. I am considering cycling through to there (from TV) so if anyone else is keen let me know. Otherwise just meet us there at 7.
  12. That plastic disk thing really sucks. Imagine how cr&p it will look on a top end bike. I only thought MTB's from makro had those stupid things on them.
  13. Is wooden faster? I would have thought that cement would have been faster. mmmm...
  14. You can find that at any shop in a black box in the braai section. I wouldnt really be eating that though
  15. What is the SA record anyway? How fast do the guys normally average around the track?
  16. yep. I agree with you guys. It must be nitrogen in there for them to work like that. I could imagine it working ok for a mtb with low pressure, but on my road bike I need to always add a bar or 2 each time I go riding. There is no way that nitrogen is not going to escape under that pressure. The one thing I like about those stayfill bombs is the last one liner on their website. Go and read it
  17. I believe we are "not allowed" to ride up table mountain. But if anyone has or does, I wouldnt mind finding out more info about it

    Hermanus

ya, I have also heard about some sick tracks out at grabow. Bit far away to slip out for the quick ride though! You joke about the 10 degree water. Last year I was swimming there and I must say that the water was this ' cold

    Hermanus

Going to hermanus this weekend. Anyone know of any nice routes there? Still wondering if I must take my mtb or road bike. I am going away with wife and baby, but I am planning to slip away for rides when I can get a chance. I will be in the voelklip area.

    Koeberg

mmm.... I forgot that I am going to Hermanus this weekend. Might not be able to make the koeberg ride this monday. But there will still be people riding anyway, just pitch at 5.30 and you will see all my friends arriving. I will try to make it if I am back in time though.
  21. Maybe you should carry on drinking it and have a huge multimillion rand court case about all the pain you have been in etc. Oh ya, that only works in the states, it seems like big fish in this country can walk out of any trouble that they have got themselves in. On a more serious note though If you are trying to use energade when racing, there is far better stuff to drink instead. These normal "energy" drinks dont really cut it when you compare it proper energy drinks. Go and look for yourself at the side of a energade/powerade bottle, I havent bought one for ages, but as far as I can remember it is a basic flavored carb drink with some added sodium I think. Now go for a little walk down the nutritional foods isle. DONT look at any prices yet, but go and grab a bottle of cytomax (or active-ade if you shop at pick n pay) Take a look at what goes into making a proper sports drink. There is different types of carbs (your body uses different systems to absorb different sugars, so you can get much more in at a time.) It also contains the minerals and electrolytes that you loose in the race. Some of the drinks even contain stimulants which can give you the edge as well. The BIG question : Do these drinks actually work or is it just a load of who ha with with big words on the bottle. I can personally say that I have used active-ade for a while now (the one with stimulants) and I can feel a difference. My post ride recovery is a lot quicker as well, because my body hasnt hit rock bottom from the ride as it would if you had ridden it without suplements. Just watch out with using something that has stimulants in the afternoon though, you could end up counting sheep at night. It is different for everyone though, so you need to find what works for you. I just dont think it is going to be in that bottle of energade though.
  22. I think the sport science center could do that for you. I dont know at what kind of a cost though. I have also heard some people talking about bikemaxpower.com. Otherwise try and hang out with some elites and learn from them.
  23. You cant do things like that to us
