  1. Which sport do you want to look at ? Every sport has the same structure and rules' date=' tennis, hockey, rugby, cricket, swimming, Pigdeon racing, show jumping, Endurance horse riding, snooker, darts, Karate, wrestling and Boxing. Why should cycling be a special case?[/quote'] "Absolute Rubbish" guy in pink.! It seems to me you are doing a bit of thumb sucking here, Just from the few sports you mention you dont need to belong to any formal CLUB structure to play, tennis, golf, swimming, squash, and definately NOT for Pigeon racing, if its considered a sport. On sports like Karate, Boxing and wrestling you need to join a do jo or club, for the simple reason of "formal training" by a qualified instructor - how do you learn the sport of karate, boxing etc (unless you come from Boksburg - sorry Scotty!) without training - last time I looked you dont need formal training to ride a bike. The fact is the club system is a "dinosaur" its never worked well in any sport, because it serves no purpose other than a cash collecting mechanism, I can train just as well on my own (and do) if I am good enough I will enter and win races on my own and get noticed - so WHY do we need clubs? lets try and be more mature in our thinking - most sports are run via a club/province and national body. for "individual sports" like tennis , golf , running and cycling you don't need to belong to a club but in most case you will pay more as a recreational participant and will be last in line when being considered (try and get a game of golf on a saturday avie) (btw what are green fees nowadays for a non club member) i can't see what is wrong in belonging to a club , getting involved and contributing (in any way wotsoever) to electing the right people to run YOUR club province and nat body.
  2. I heard on 567 that chappies will be closed for the next month. but will we be able to cycle over it? ifso what is the road surface like?

  4. that's a dangerous road to ride alone
  5. 6and 3 quarter pages of ZIP and not a word of sense from the BIG MOUTH'S in the JHB so it looks like we are left with the those that were voted in to run our sport.

  10. Even though it is B worlds i think we are going to witness some serious cycling. re the road race , there are 76 countries riding so there should only be one big bunch, and with a rolling road closure , i can't see it being a problem
  11. it depends on your start venue - avoid the Main Road (CT thru to Fish Hoek). if you start in CT ride over Kloof Nek into Camps Bay via The Glen, follow the coastal road into Hout Bay , over Chappies and then down into Fish Hoek and then floow the Argus route back to CT.
  12. http://www.citycyclingclub.org/cctraining/thumbnails/cctraining08_jpg.jpgthis foto was taken on club training ride about halfway down (up) the climb. the gravel road is in the distance at the top end of the foto. the climb is quite steep at first and if the south easter pumps the climb will be hard and hot. the climb flattens out to the top and speed will be high. this particular spot will be great for viewing
  13. Mamdali go to www.route62.co.za this site give all accomodation on this route between Cape and Port Elizabeth. my suggestion would be to drive to Montagu - train in and around that area - then onto Oudtshoorn - train in and around that area - then onto Plett/Knysna - train in and around the area and then a final push to PE.
  14. We will be leaving from the BP Service Station , Letchworth Drive Edgemead @ 5.00am. lights rear & back. we are on a rest week so its a light spin session down to P Eiland and then (hopefully with the wind from behind) down to Table View and back to Edgemead. time in saddle is about 1 + hour hour. most of us have to be back by 6.30am
  15. We ride from Edgemead most Tuesdays & Thursday mornings. pm me if u are interested
  16. Cruxpearl, i think one must watch out for the handcrafted bikes from italy, bianchi is probally mass produced somewhere in the world
  17. Those that were chosen obviously have a little bit of talent for cycling - would it not be in our interest to add a few other names and form a squad of potential WC, Cm'wealth and Olympic cyclists. aren't the Olympics next year? The Development Commissioners should be working at this right now.
  18. a bike built in Italy will have an Italian thread - all other make would have an english thread. (thats the way i understand it)
  19. amoryns, are we talking about the same shop (northern burbs = bellville) (cyclists = bald 40 somethings in 4x4's with mtn bikes on the back)
  20. thanks Ronelle, i am up in your area from 4th - 10th. i will contact albetus.
  21. Zaskar, thks for the info, i'm more into the road and would like to ride the Robinson Pass but wouldn't like to get caught without a shoulder and heavy traffic volumes. the mtn bike is backup for "old jeep tracks" if available and for my son.
