  1. I think that all bikes have too many gears, but what do I know - I started riding when they only had 5 I think that it's relevant to distinguish between the hi/low ratios and the number of steps in between. A (road) 10 speed cluster starts at say 12 and steps to 25. I have an old 6 speed cluster that also starts at 12 to 25. Front ring - ja well, I need my little chain ring on my racer. If I was to choose - it would be the big ring that goes
  2. Offer R250, but you pau the postage. No cracks or scrathes or stripped threads! Send bank details
  3. Sorry - meant to put it in the Retro Bike thread!
  4. Need an old Dura-Ace FD for my Rossin. It's a braze on fitting. Got to be an old one from the 80's - 90's!
  5. Got one that you can have.
  6. Great thread! My projects have slowed a bit of late. Was away for a bit. Had a look at my stock of frames vs bits and it looks like I need to build rather than scrounge bits for a while. Long of components, short of built bikes. Latest "work in progress" - an old steel Look & a Bridgestone - still not finished. Built a fixie with and old waterpipe pug frame - jeez what a nice smooth + SILENT ride. All you can hear is the road noise! Trying to ride the fixie backwards - has anybody ever perfected this?? Re-building a Mongoose for my daughter. Interesting little bike - also "retro". Anyone got a decent retro headset lying about - even a Tange will do. Also - who has any old Suntour stuff?
  7. Very sorry to hear this. Was riding my motorcycle today and thinking how vulnerable we (cyclists/motorcyclists) are to this kind of prang.
  8. Water pipe PUG fixie built from bits.......
  9. Conti - great seller. Sends the stuff promptly any you always get exactly what he says you will!
  10. Ah - Ok. The stuff I use is so old its pretty "ramp" free to start I found an old "Dotek" crank set for my fixie. used the inner chainring (42) because its smaller and mainly because it's much easier to line up! But I guess I could easily just use the 52 in the same position. Only snag is the bolt lemgth - you have to use spacers (same width as the big chain ring) if you only use one. Seems to work ok. Got a 15 on the back.
  11. This model has a "lunatic" circuit built in. When it is silly cold it switches the thing off in the hope that the rider is not going to be silly enough to ride in blizzards
  12. What is a "proper" chainring boet - are you talking about size?
  13. Is price the main criteria? The more cash the better? Why not draw up a list of criteria - like 7800, carbon frame and create the bike yourself. I think that you will be surprised how well you can do at building the thing yourself rather than buying someone else's idea of what he can sell for R50k?
  14. Spoke?
  15. Hey - what's with you guys This is racism - I always wave at MB okes as I cruise past Seriously - you got to be nice to them because half the RB chaps are not going to even slow down if you hit a tree/car/taxi/mamma etc
  16. Thanks Johan. Will Loktite, then fit Italian BB then throw the frame away I thought about doing the brazing myself then remembered that the whole bloody thing is held together with braze....
  17. Ha Ha. Lucky for us on the East Rand that CA is too far away... but if it was in Boksburg I would be nervous to take my frame there. If I was not 100% happy and moaned I would get nuked by little Lil! I take my frames to JG powder coating - basic colours - well done, albeit a bit flat. Can always do a bit of clearcoat afterwards? Cost is R280/frame.
  18. Johan - its steel. Old racer. It't the frames threads. Half of them are gone! Its on the chain side - lh thread. Scared to tighten because the threads that are left dont look too good either
  19. I have cleaned them up but they are pretty munched. The bb cup screws in but I am scared to tighten - it's close to pulling out the few "good" threads left. I heard that you can tap the bb oversize?
  20. The philistine who worked on this bb previously, cross threaded the rhs threads and mangled them pretty badly. I have cleaned them up as best I can, but I am not sure the cup is going to stay put (tighten up?). I am reaching for the loktite.... Has anyone got any better ideas?
  21. Jag - agreed - it can be a pain in the ass. TNT1 is on the nail. It's a game - dont take it too seriously. As you generate interest and comment - so your ad rises to the top. We are not all asses - if I see something I want I pi$$ with the seller a bit first then I buy it. If I really want it then I PM a firm offer. I actually enjoy the smoke - it gives me a gap to secure the buy
  22. Jeez - this makes me mad!! 5.30am and the lights are triggered by induction - like a huge car! Lets get both sides of the story. I go through red lights every morning. I make sure that it's safe to go and I go. I guess some okes have got zip better to do at 5.30 than rat on a couple of cyclists. Pleeeeeeze!
  23. I would go with mild steel - its easier to machine and braze? I am sur you could use EN36B or Stainless but is the nut going to know?
  24. little bump - hurts to toss it
