  1. These looks cool but I still don't understand why it wouldn't be better to just get codes (that's if you want that much braking power in the first place)
  2. If its the bearings then check them as soon as possible. A seized bearing can cause damage to your frame. I replaced the rusty bearings (of which one was seized) on my mongoose with new ones and it cost me about R100. Solved the cracking problem instantly. Depending on your bike you might also be able to find replacement bearings easily.
  3. Now you guys need to ask yourself why this situation happens? 3 possibilities I can think of right now: 1) Some psycho is going around at night putting out nails for the fun of it 2) Someone seriously pissed at cyclists bad behavior 3) Someone lost a couple of black nails Feel free to add to this list
  4. Thats not a bad price considering they are super durable and last very long. Also they keep water out on wet days. However I use mine for mountain biking exclusively, as soon as i am done riding and get home i take them off and store them away for minimal wear
  5. Remove the chain then stand next to the bike and press down hard on one pedal in the forward down direction. Now repeat with the other pedal. If it creaks then it is the BB bearings. If not put the chain back and repeat pushing the pedals. If it creaks then it most likely the dropouts but can also be something with the rear hub. Check whether there is play in the hub, wheel is tightened also remove the dropouts, grease underneath, put back then use loctite for the bolts and torque them to the correct value.
  6. Im sure he meant your girlfriend looks better riding a bike than you
  7. Yeah thats the spirit Seeing the joy people experience when they get stuff right makes it really worth helping out.
  8. Not crap advice at all. Here is my advice: Group rides only helps if there are experienced riders in the group, in fact when starting out try and ride with riders that are much better than you. Most skills clinics are pretty crap anyway. And the best way to learn to ride properly is by using flat pedals, dropping the saddle, putting on arm and kneepads and then going as fast as you feel comfortable with while believing in yourself. Let the faster riders ride in front, try to observe what they are doing and then ask lots of questions. Crashing is not so much a question of "if" but rather "when" so best to get the beginner stages over with as soon as possible. Also, dont go for a too expensive bike in the beginning. You need something that can be replaced later once you are sure what you want to do. About R4K max should give you a decent second hand hardtail which you should be able to sell for close to the same value.
  9. OMW just saw this on gumtree: http://capetown-westerncape.gumtree.co.za/c-Stuff-for-Sale-sports-bicycles-fitness-GT-Force-1-0-large-frame-W0QQAdIdZ343703239 If its in good nick then you should totally check it out
  10. This is really great advice, wide bars and a short stem will improve the bike's handeling a lot and is the way to go! Also id like to add that if you can, get lock on grips they dont slide around and are very easy to install and remove.
  11. Well done for having the camera ready and taking the photos
  12. I wouldnt go with a bike that is too heavy since its going to make it really hard to use for general XC riding and decrease your enjoyment of uphills ALOT. Also it is important that the bike has a decent pedalling platform that does not bob. I am currently riding a GT Force which I bought around 1 1/2 years back at the Obike sale and all I can say is the bike is great for both XC (used it for wine2whales) and light downhill (did the easier courses skipping the big features). Very stable going through rough terrain and handles small to medium drops and jumps with no problem whatsoever. 140mm/150mm front and 150mm rear suspension and about 1 to 1 1/2 kgs heavier than a trailbike. Obviously its not a dh bike but neither is a beefier 160mm travel frame. For me personally I would not want to pedal anything uphill and for XC distances that weighs more than 15 kg and would only recommend a heavy bike if you are going to continue using your boulder for XC. In that case get a Freeride or dh specific bike.
  13. Hey I remember something about this. I actually attended a meeting at the bike shop there where plans were discussed to lease the land and develop some trails. Put my name and email down on a list that was circulated and then didnt hear anything about it again. So would be great if these plans are still in the pipeline.
  14. Sounds like there may be something wrong with the lockout system. My Recon locks very solid when the lockout is engaged. Changing the rebound etc to compensate for this wont help and will affect your ride negatively. I would say get the seller to fix the problem or find another bike.
  15. How about you round up a couple of thousand XC riders and ask PoS if its possible to work on the XC trails on the next build day? Or maybe start a fund or something where people can donate money for your cause. Don't rely on other people to get things done the whole time.
  16. Dont think they allow you to order Mavic products to a place that's outside the EU. Probably some agreement they have with Mavic. Anyway thats how it was the last time I checked. However if it is a custom built wheelset then that may be a different story. Best to contact them via email they take around 2 days to respond.
  17. It may be that he didn't have the key initially, but still it sounds like he treated the matter rather poorly. Lets hope the new person that takes over from him has a better relationship with cyclists. Any idea who the person is that will be taking over? Edit: BTW hope you get well soon man! The accident you described can happen to anyone.
  18. If Sanparks really appreciate the effort, maybe they must just put out a statement that thanks the people that have been looking after the trails. Not that anyone doing trail maintenance expects anything in return but its a simple thing to do and would count a lot towards parks/riders relations. Sanparks holds a pretty negative image with a lot of riders and this contributes to a lot of the problems imho, maybe public relations is where work is needed first. At the moment, to many riders it looks like Sanparks doesn't really care about mountainbiking at all and it is seems like it is only the efforts of non-parks volunteers that really counts. If people respected the organisation more, then they would want to work with them and actually respect the park more as well. Which means buying a wildcard not only to gain access, but also to support conservation and also growing mountain biking as a sport.
  19. HI guys if this happens do not pay the amount on the second box, ask the post office to send it back to customs for re-evaluation. Get the local tracking number then give customs a call and explain what happened, someone will then look into this and ask you to email/fax your copy of the slip you received from the post office where you did pay for the first package. Once they are happy that you did pay the first time your goods won't be taxed again but you will probably still pay the handling fee of around R30 again. Its going to be easier this way than having to try and get a refund after paying. I had to do something similar on a package that I received this year and must say I was quite impressed by how they handled the situation.

    New Tires

Im currently running a MInion 2.35 front and a Kenda Nevegal 2.35 back. The 2.35 was previously my front tyre and is halfway worn but is now really great for the back. This will get replaced with a high roller 2.35 once the Kenda is worn down a bit more. I would say go dual ply wirebead they work excellent as tubeless tyres too (regarding the Maxxis Minion). Now you still need to decide about compound. This can also be pretty important, a softer compound provides better traction but wears down quicker than a harder compound. For this reason many people go for a soft compound for the front tyre and a harder compound for the rear tyre.
  21. Excited about the Snake-Eyes and rinkhals rebuilds, lets make it better than it ever was before
  22. That bike looks absolutely sick! Wish I had one.
  23. Hi Melch, Mavic rims are pretty cool but I dont think you can import any Mavic products from CRC to South Africa, not sure of the reason but probably something to do with them having a special arangement with Mavic to only distribute in the EU. Some other online stores have this same rule. If you order a complete custom built wheelset then the above may not apply though, and sometimes this makes more sense than buying rims locally and also paying for the wheelbuild, so you might want to check this option out aswell.
  24. Have to say Im really impressed by how easy it is to fit a Maxxis Minion 2.35 Dual ply Wire bead as tubeless. Did exactly that on Saturday and the tyre actually held air without even having sealant inside, even though it was pumped up to 4.3 bar. Clicks into place and no air leaks / bubbles at the bead whatsoever so I was very impressed.
  25. Hey if the pedals feel loose try and open them up, if it is cup and cone setup then tighten them up to remove the play and fill up with grease.
