  1. Door or some sort that got scorched before impact
  2. Lot of scorched surfaces there - fuel tanks must have been violated by something, which caught fire and made the aircraft unflyable. I read that the Tor 9K331 has a minimum range of 1.something km and minimum height of 10m but how does it work? kinetic impact / explosive warhead on impact or does it explode before impact and cause distruction by shrapnel?
  3. Who knows .. media is going 'ballistic' over this,as they do. The timing suggests something could have been mistakenly fired, Lest we forget Iran Air Flight 655 shot down by the US Navy. Ukraine has been invited to review the black box data, I can understand the refusal of anything to do with the US but really Canada should have access though, so many perished.
  4. Those SAM missiles take out aircraft flying at altitude, maybe a sidewinder type but anyway there are many reason why a fire could have broken out just after takeoff, its all speculation, BS IMHO, Why repeat information that can not be verified? that you can not link to or reference to reputable source?
  5. From Av Herald: http://avherald.com/h?article=4d1aea51&opt=0 During the night from Jan 8th to Jan 9th 2020 somebody on Twitter released a photo of a Tor 9K331 warhead presumably found at the crash site (and temporarily even the reader comments below flooded over referencing that photo). The location as well as the authenticity of the photo were not verifyable. The Aviation Herald therefore sent an inquiry to Iran's AIB with the photo, the supposed location at the crash site and relevant links in support and contradicting the authenticity of that photo and asked, whether the accident investigation had found such a part (expressing the hope that these issues wouldn't add too much to the stresses of the AIB). Iran's AIB Chairman responded stating: "We save evidence and wreckage of the aircraft and never found this part. All wreckage parts were transferred to the special hanger in order to investigate with cooperation of NTSB, Ukraine NBAI and other interest parties which has been invited officially." The chairman continued: "Due to special political condition of my country, we instituted a special group more than technical accident investigation groups to assess the condition of Laser attack or dangerous good- electromagnetic (radioactive threat) and unlawful action. The initial conclusion of this group confirmed that there was not found any evidence of mentioned actions on the accident site. Also we will trace all other evidences of the accident by gathering all information of the accident." The chairman indicated the AIB plans to release a preliminary first report in English during Jan 9th 2020.
  6. Source? Anyway isn't the explosive bit in the tip there?
  7. You probably got more choices there than Jozi... There are just a few places here that sell treated timber here, and its all lowest grade SA pine stock that goes into the cooker.
  8. I did some timber work (patio deck and awning) in Canada yonks ago, and used treated timber that was stock from the DIY store down the road were very decent pine of some sort, consistent width and density, nicely planed, straight, flat, true, Really SA Pine must be bottom of the barrel in terms of timber.. but few seem to care here in ZA.
  9. Sure Meranti is nice but was not really an option because its has got silly expensive 10x Main rafters were 25x152mm 4.6m, that cost around R1200 That in Meranti . .I shudder to think, at least 10x - 20x But even decking ,,,, would not waste my money on Meranti Anything exposed to water is going to go south in a few years unless you give it very regular (and tedious) TLC, except possibly Balau , which is even more silly expensive. There is that fake composite 'wood' though I 'wood' use if I was ever going to build a deck again.
  10. Before the year is out, I would like to have a proper lament about the lack of decent treated structural timber here. I've been busy on a patio awning rebuild project for someone and went the treated timer route, and only one choice here: SA Pine. Got some planks from Noags market, I did try make a selection for decent timber, but... Come to erecting the rafters, just about every plank has its issues: warping, knots everywhere, buckling, variation in width and thickness, variation in density, just generally unpleasant to work with and a challenge to say the least... uuurgh.
  11. Aliens favor wheat crops tho .... I am sure the designers of that Cessna did not intend it to be a tail dragger
  12. What do you make of this emergency landing in Argentina today? Looks like it came in tail down, wobbled a bit, bled speed then the nose dropped. Well done is all I can say.
  13. Let me chip in here ... Here's an interesting article on that, although variants of the A350 are not on the chart https://theicct.org/blog/staff/size-matters-for-aircraft-fuel-efficiency
  14. There are those all in one big box thingies that have 2x 100 Ah batteries in, plus a 1 or 1.4 kW Inverter Charger on top, that go for R7-8K+. Although those inverters are 'modified' sine wave, that is okay for electronics, not okay for motors (too many harmonics) Otherwise get a 100Ah battery, a small inverter and a charger, these can be found at 4x4 stores, china malls etc, also Ellies. Battery will set you back around R2k Just one thing though, you do not want to deeply discharge your battery, it will do damage, read up on low voltage disconnect. You really want a lot more capacity than you will need, so you do not dip too deeply into the discharge cycle. Check the data sheets for lifespan vs depth of discharge,
  15. Heart goes out to any Employers during office hours load shedding - I feel your pain! been there, done that .... and lost a packet. Employment Contracts should be amended with the provision of remuneration as long as there is mains power. Even working for myself, I am finding it hard to stick to schedules, this bollox messes up everything.
  16. Most of the routers are 12V DC so you can go straight from the terminals, just get ur polarity right! it will say on the back what it is, normally center positive
  17. UPS's are not a good idea to run for an extended period, they have small batteries, and running them to the point where they turn off will mean short battery life.
  18. I hate the noise of generators during load shedding, or no mains . Fortunately where I live no one has one, except me, which I only use if I really have to. But please tell me, how the fook can a power station flood?
  19. Trying to to resolve that those will pass the UK based Litmus Test ...do you have experience of these, or any other prepaid debit cards?
  20. Where there is a will, there is a way! I really want to get a legit Eurosport sub now, so tired of random kuk streams. BBC & ITV works with Getflix
  21. The BC Helicopters guys who did a round the world trip on a R22, they came the opposite way though up from Japan, in more favorable weather, but did some great vlogs on the trip.
  22. Juan (as above) says they drill this routine all the time, everyone is be briefed at take off for such an event, and they even know what distance they need to stop with the given load. The aircraft is rated to land with full tanks, they would only dump at 10000 ft anyway, the circuit there is 5000 ft
  23. Found some more info: these wheelsets have a mechanism to relive high pressure to prevent them exploding. These probably blew after it had left the runway, the heating was mainly due to brakes working hard to bring this fully laden bad boy to a stop. Source: a 777 FO
  24. Wondering when they exploded...? on touch down, or after a while in the landing run due to heat caused by overloading... Rims don't look too schamgled. I guess after declaring a Mayday on one engine, dumping fuel wasn't an option
