With the new rates tariffs now being in effect, it has just added more financial pressures to the monthly household budgets. As a household of 7 (the 4 of us and our domestic and her husband and son), we are already looking at an extra R1500/mnth. The squeeze is just getting worse and worse.

I also neglect the stretching. Just getting out of bed in the morning is a stretch for me 🤣 PS. I am on the plus side of 50.

Being Friday and if you really want to open a can of worms, how many adds are there on the hub that say brand new, but it is a 2018/19/20 model? Brand New is 2022. Yes it might be old stock, never sold, never used - but it is not brand new. It like walking into a car dealership and asking to buy a brand new car and the salesmen says we have this beauty of a 2019 model never sold before?

My 2c worth. Try and pay off the car sooner as that is a depreciating asset. If finances allow, the best would be to put a little into both.

I guess Covid was always going to have the last laugh. Just reminding us that it is still present, albeit more like the common flu. Guessing that 3/4 of the drop outs are Covid related.

Couldn't agree more. I think a lot of people don't realise that we are coming off one of (if not) the lowest interest rate cycles in years. The sad reality is that a lot of people took this as an opportunity to amass credit (yes some didn't have a choice due to Covid) without realising/understanding that the rate will eventually go up to a normalised level.

As mentioned, I really feel for the youngsters of today. Back in the mid 90's, I bought my first property (a 60m/sqr1 bed garden apartment) in Morningside, Sandton for R155 000. (less than a high end bike now days). Advice given by my folks was to look for the worst house in the best area as you can always improve on the property and not the area. Those same apartments are now selling for over R1million. Not many youngsters in their mid 20's can afford a bond in excess of R1 million which makes it extremely difficult to break into the property market.

So thankful that I am still able to work from home. My fuel saving is huge and that saving is at least covering other expenses

With everything on the rise, it is becoming more and more difficult for households to save for rainy days. I put away part of monthly income into savings but am now having to reduce that amount to just cover living expenses. With the July increase in municipal rates, it is just going to get worse. Its that old saying were the rich get rich and the working class feel the pinch.
