  1. JAIL SENTENCE AS MERRICK WITHDRAWS APPEAL We just heard that Geoffrey Merrick who was found guilty of culpable homicide after the death of Dr. Koos Roux has withdrawn his appeal case and will serve his three-year sentence in prison. Merrick crashed into Dr. Koos Roux who at the time was cycling with his son on Bottelary Road, well within the road shoulder. Merrick then fled the scene. The police arrested Merrick ten days later when debris found on the scene matched that of his car. According to the authorities, Merrick withdrew his appeal which means he now needs to serve out his three-year sentence. Merrick was found guilty of culpable homicide as well as three Road Act infringements. Sections 61 (1) (a),(b) and © of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996, which states the following: Section 61 (1) (a), “that the driver, must immediately stop the vehicle and report the accident; Section 61 (1) (b) – ascertain the nature and extent of any injury sustained by any person; and Section 61 (1) (c ) – if a person is injured, render such assistance to the injured person as he or she may be capable of rendering”. This is the first time that a prison sentence has been handed down in a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a cyclist in South Africa. According to magistrate Abdul Kader Jamalie, Merrick deprived the deceased of his right to live and the Roux family of a husband and a father. The magistrate added that Merrick was grossly negligent as he left the victim and his shocked son next to the road to fend for themselves. Mr. Roux might have survived the crash if Mr. Merrick had remained at the scene to assist.
  2. A brown stick, perhaps?
  3. So silly, all this showmanship. In "my day" the guys was focused while walking down to the ring, maybe did a jig or two once they entered the ring, threw a few sparring punches, and then got down to business once the bell rang. They let their fists do the talking. They were fighters first and foremost, now they must be entertainers too.
  4. Just excuses. He got tagged hard with almost the very first haymaker overhand right that Fury threw. After that you could see him get flatfooted and lost his "control of the ring" Fury then just walked him down, throwing punches almost at will, with little to none coming back from Wilder. Only a haymaker of his own would have swung that fight back into his favor. Not even that one point deduction would have helped him if it went to the score cards.
  5. Fury vs Joshua. Will be interesting, but I cannot see Fury beat Joshua, unless he lands a haymaker or punch similar to the one that put Wilder out of commission. Fury is strong, and he can land the odd punch. He is very awkward and not a technical boxer at all. Most of his punches is "arm only" with little to no weight behind them, and he is flatfooted when he throws his punches. His left "jab" is not a jab at all, he pushes his arm out with an open glove, when he connects it is with the palm of his open hand, no power there at all, he basically just push his palm into his opponents face. Joshua is a very skilled and technically correct boxer, and he can throw a decent punch (question is, can he take one?) I think he is too good for Fury, and should, on any good day, be able to outbox Fury. But that's only my take on it. Lots of people will differ.
  6. Not a good idea, he's too small for a natural heavyweight. Will have to bulk up a lot, and then he stands the chance to loose some of his speed and mobility.
  7. Other small goggatjie's
  8. Best of luck, trust it will work out for you, as planned.

So Yamaha might be in with a chance? (that is if they can make up the +- 15km/h top speed deficit.)
  10. All part of the softening up process. Before long the cash cows will pay any rate, just to get electricity. (or so they hope)
  11. Strongs, BigDL.
  12. Brilliant. Just like the new "cycle lane/pedestrian path" they are busy installing in my neighborhood. They just tarred around the existing warning triangles in the turn of the road, did not even bother to straighten the few that is so way off center, it's not even funny.
  13. Sorry for your loss. I have two pekingese doggy children myself, and they are the most amazing animals. Mine is also going on 9 years now, but both still fit and healthy.
  14. Why not try and contact the office of our esteemed Premier Alan Winde. He is an avid cyclist, should have "our" best interest at heart? (or am I too gullible}
  15. That is the Tour de PPA route. It does not come back on Slent, but carries on to R302, and finish is at D'Urbanvale, not on Odendaals as with 99'er. Rest of the route is a mirror.
  16. OOOOOPPPPPPSSSSsssssssss................ Correct, I stand corrected. As you were.
  17. Nah, not buying that. The entry fees jump considerably the year CWC became one of the principle sponsors, and has not dropped since then. But, like you say, to each his own. OK, back to discussing the race itself, and not the entry fees or what does (or does not) go with it.
  18. If that is correct, it is basically the same as the Tour De PPA route (which costs about R150 less to enter )
  19. Probably "bagged"
  20. PPA website, under Events; Seeding
  21. This, and the poor condition of the Van Schoorsdrif road is the two main reason why I'm not entering for this race. Will get my chance to climb Vissershok with the Tour de PPA race,.
  22. It did wonders for my seeding, dropped me from the top of one group, right down to the bottom of the next, almost in the group below that (almost two groups improvement)
  23. GL is 06h27
