  1. As I understand it, you have to match up the rear deraileur with the shifters. So SRAM shifters with SRAM rear deraileur. On the front you can mix and match. So SRAM and SRAM or SRAM and Shimano or Shimano and SRAM. If you're not shifting lekker up front, it could be cause by cable wear or even cable routing.
  2. Hi Burts, What is the brand of the hub you're trying to service? I think R3SL might have gotten mixed up with a free hub body and a hub. There has been some discussion about grease before. Some peeps like the lumo green shimano grease, some like "water proof" grease and some swear by just plain grease. I've used all 3 and the only comment I can make regarding performance is that "water proof" grease can still get pretty dirty after a wet ride. I do recall something about not wanting to get 2 different types of greases mixed / cross contaminated. So make sure to clean all the parts as best you can. I currently use normal toffee colored all purpose bearing grease on all my shimano bearings. Also, you don't need to PACK the bearings like they're heading on a long oversees trip. Enough to just cover the bearing balls should be ample. I was amazed to see with how little grease Shimano ships their hubs. One last tip is to note how many balls are used on each race of your bearing. If there were nine when you started, make sure there are nine again when you finish. even if there is space for a 10th. Adding an extra ball will change the way the cone sits in the bearing. Hope you come right
  3. Welcome to the world of DIY lighting Stewie! Custom is very definitely very rewarding. Negotiating things like efficiency, heat dissipation, size and space (not to mention weight) will keep you busy for a while. There's a lot of info on DIY lights here: http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?f=124 What lenses and LEDs did you go for?
  4. My girlfriend got me a Topeak digital tyre pressure gauge for Christmas. Awesome girlfriend! The new gauge informed me that what the floor pump thinks is 2 bar is actually closer to 3.4!!! The result is that I've found a new world of grip.
  5. I doubt she'll be happy writing anything soon. She had some pretty nasty roasties on her elbow. Some other bumps and bruises too. She came down on the descent down "Mine shaft". Hit a deep rut that caught most of us off guard. She took a very nasty tumble, but I'm sure she'll dust herself off and hopefully get back on the horse soon. As for the ride report... I heard a little story about the boyfriend of the girl that took a tumble (that sound like the title of a book: the boyfriend of the girl that took a tumble ) @Aonyx if you can do a 16km lap around Groenkloof in under 1h10m you'll be considered a racing snake It's very social and a good jol.
  6. That can make for an interesting topic. What have you found inside your tubeless tyre? I've found pieces of those long white thorns that broke off inside the tyre.
  7. That's the perfect handicap system. The racing snakes should all ride tubes and the time they use to fix tubes, I can use to get a head start!
  8. Interesting... everyone seems convinced that using a bomb will cause the sealant to do this... That may be, but I suspect there are other factors that may cause the same effect. I took out a ping-pong ball sized "asteroid" from my front LUST Monorail the other day. I've never used a bomb on my MTB. I suspect that it might happen when the wheel stays stationary for extended periods of time. I checked the rear wire bead Crossmark and only found that it was low on Stans; no "asteroids" though. My MTB hangs up in the rafters of the garage with the front wheel tied to the rear wheel of the GF's bike, so my theory goes that I often spin the rear wheel of my bike before I get into my car, but I can't spin the front because its tied to the other bike. Because I ride a road bike and MTB it often happens that one bike gets used more than the other, resulting in 2 week stretches where the MTB just hangs and waits.
  9. What? WHAT!? Okay, maybe not "float", but you definitely feel like all the tube swapping was worth it when you're racing.
  10. Height: 1.8m Weight: 81.3kg Front: 53 - 39 Rear: 11 - 25 Cranks: 172.5 But like MJ said. Any weight off your wheels makes a difference. To such a degree that I train with slime filled tubes and race with Conti super sonics. It feels like the bike floats up hills in races.
  11. Back from the 2010 grave. It seems bargains have become the exception to the rule on the hub. Not that it's all bad... I suppose it means that the Hub provides such a big market that sellers are getting their prices. So that's one positive side for the sellers. Other than the obvious down side to buyers, the market/demand is so big, that buyers are clambering over each other to get that bargain. I've found myself beaten to a sale even though I know I was the first to inquire. I'm not complaining as such, I'm just saying it leaves a bad taste. It's a bit like someone taking the DVD you're about to hire out of your hand and rents it. I suppose I should refresh my inbox more regularly and pull the trigger on the sale immediately... The problem with this scenario is that it makes for a scammers paradise. It's an "Eat or be eaten world"
  12. Intro ride tonight. Gonna hit XTC park in a big way! Can't wait!
  13. I'm patiently waiting for a good deal on an Ultegra 11-25 (prefered) or 12-25 cassette.
  14. yes, but this is over a lap that I do 2 or 3 times a month. The 56m20s was my best lap out of about 15 months. the 52m30s was a week later on my very first lap on the new wheels. I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the improvement had nothing to do with the condition of the rider.
  15. IMO it's not always purely about weight, but rather where you're saving that weight. Saving weight on anything that rotate is going to benefit you more than say a seatpost. Running tubeless may or may not be "lighter", but tubeless rolls better and grips better than a tubed setup. My best time for my 16km Groenkloof lap was 56m20s running entry level shimano wheels with a tubed Monorail/Crossmark combo and tyreliners as pucture protection. Since then I've switched to Shimano XT wheelset, running that same Monorail/Crossmark combo and my current best time for the same lap is 51m50s. My first lap running the XT wheelset was 52m30s. The combination of switching from tubed to tubeless and the XT wheelset over my old entry level set saves me 4 mins per hour. I don't know if there's another upgrade that will save more time than that.
  16. I think the Edge 500 calculates calories based on HR by default. I doubt you can change it. My Edge 500 and old polar CS300 show very similar results for similar routes.
  17. MBP, were they LUST or the normal versions? I ran a wirebead Monorail that did that and the postmortem showed that the Stans started to delaminate the tyre where I had patched a big cut. So I'm thinking Stans + normal version Maxxis + biggish cut = failure/ tyre distortion.
  18. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Maxxis Monorail up front, Maxxis CrossMark on the back. Tyre choice is a very personal thing and to each his own. But the Monorail/CrossMark works for me, especially in drier conditions. I don't like the Crossmark in front because I find it skittish. However on the back it tracks nicely, but it's loose enough for you to get the back out if you want to. I had a wirebead Crossmark at the back running Tubeless (635g). With the bit of rain we had in the last couple of weeks I decided to throw a UST Kenda Nevegal (810g) on the back to get a bit more traction, however, that extra 175g and the extra rolling resistance from the Nevegal is killing me up the hills and flats. I'm liking it going fast on downhill though. As soon as the mud dries out I'm putting the Crossmark back though. Then there is the difference between the normal and LUST versions from Maxxis. Normal Wirebead (635g), normal foldable (545g) and LUST (705g). The normal foldable should be a LOT quicker than the LUST version, but the LUST version looks like a much better quality and much more robust tyre. Enjoy making your choice Have a look at this link, make for interesting reading. Tire test results
  19. Shjo, tonights ride was like that band from the 80's and 90's WET WET WET! Thanks guys, it was good fun!
  20. Hey guys, does anyone have any news regarding the possible LONG ride tomorrow night? I'm trying to decide between 70km in the dark, or 70km at Babbas on Thursday.

This amazed smile just won't go away!
  22. I don't think she'll be there. She has a baby shower to go to... Browny point SUPER BONUS!!! Our team kinda fell apart last minute, plus I got a cold last week which is only clearing up now AND online entries have come and gone... So it doesn't look like I'll be riding this year Have fun guys! I'm very jealous!
  23. mmm, interesting. I haven't calibrated or set any elevation points... But what I did do was to map the route on MapMyRide, export to file (set route time to 3 hours), import as a course in Training Center, export course to device... It was pretty cool to see "Time ahead: 2m05s" after the N14 on the device... but "Time behind: (can't remember)" after the city loop had me a little worried Very cool little gadgets them Edge 500s
  24. My edge 500 shows 1,249m Elevation Gain.
