  1. AfreekduSoet, the names don't necessarily correspond to a specific route. We very seldom ride exactly the same routes as other times. Think of the ride names more like description of what you can expect the terrain to be like. The idea of Mild2Wild is to get about 30km odd in on mild districts roads/jeeptrack mixed with some nice wild single track I estimate the ride to be about 2h25m19s ... give or take. So depending on how promptly we start, we should be done around 21:25:20
  2. Wag, wag, wag... wat het ons gemis? You didn't have an ungraceful dismount at the last ride... so where did what happen?
  3. My Shimano M540s also have a tendency to squeak. I've tried grease on the contact areas where the cleat meets the pedal, which got rid of the squeaks, but made for interesting cleating in/out and it didn't solve the problem for very long. I tried a tiny bit of mineral oil this weekend which worked pretty well. I don't know how long the squeak will stay away though...
  4. Most likely the resonant frequency of your bike. You could check the play on your wheel bearings and perhaps have the wheels trued. My old Trek used to go "wobbly" at about 75km/h... Made for interesting descents
  5. Well done to all the sub 3 club members. I was hoping to be there myself, but I started at the back of E bunch and couldn't get to the front before the group split going up through Constantia. I put the hammer down on the M3 to try and bridge the massive gap, but once we hit Boyes I realized it's an effort in futility. Well done lads.
  6. It's Thursday!!! Can I hear a Whoop-WHOOP!
  7. I did a 3:01 from KL at the Dischem Ride for Sight. I kicked myself for not pushing even harder than I did over the final km or so. BUT I realized that there is something to LA's famous words; "every second counts" The seconds at the start and the middle and the end all count the same. Same as golf... A 300m drive counts the same as a 2' putt. All you really can do is to make sure you give it your best. Just a side ponder: The races over last 3 weeks, up here in GP, had the main bunch stay together almost to the end of each race and saw only a handful of riders doing the pace making. Say there are 180 riders in a start group. If each one of those riders took a turn at the front for only 1 minute...
  8. I really enjoyed the race and would be hard pressed to find anything to fault. If I had to gripe about something, it would have to be about the guys starting ahead of their start groups. There were quite a few DL's and even an EL or 2 in the CL group. But in the end, no harm, no foul. I would like to thank the marshal on the motorbike, that chaperoned the CLs, for his excellent work. I feel it did make a difference in safety to have his presence at the front of the group. And also, high five to the guy in the blue kit that broke away with me with about 15km's to go. It was good fun
  9. I'm in E too!
  10. Ruff week Leon?
  11. Apparently very easy. I heard someone went up there twice!
  12. I ride a set of 2006 Ksyriums as training wheels and 2009 Ksyriums as a racing set. (200g difference between the 2 sets, 400g if you take tubes and tyres into consideration.) My GF rides a set of Easton EA90's. I like the Mavics for their racy look and sound. The placebo effect of believing those bladed spokes slice through the air better than normal spokes also weighs in the Mavic’s favour. The Eastons are SMOOTH and they have a classic quality and feel about them. It’s like comparing a German saloon and a Japanese sports car with similar performance specs. In the end I believe it boils down to personal taste.
  13. You pay the VAT and handling fees to the delivery man. multiply your total amount by 0.16 and you'll have an idea of how much cash to have ready... If I remember correctly, DHL phoned me on day 2 and told me that I'll need to have my R300 ready when they deliver...
  14. T-Girl, I take it that those rime are the Mavic 117 that came standard on the 2010 Anthem X3. They aren't the heaviest rims around. They're pretty nice actually. You really don't need to get better rims unless you're planning on getting heavy into racing. The reason why they feel heavy is because of the liners AND slime... normally a person chooses between the 2 because both add weight to your setup. I converted the ones off my Anthem X3 by getting 2 Joe's conversion strips and some sealant. Have a look at the videos on the Joe's website It's super easy. As for tyres... if you ride on predominantly dry surfaces you won't go wrong with a Maxxis Monorail in front and Crossmark at the back. Kenda Nevegals are popular if you're looking for a bit more grip, but beware, they are heavy. A tubeless setup just rolls so much better than a tubed setup. You'll think you have a new bike after doing the conversion. As a side note. Get yourself a proper pressure gauge and inflate to 25 - 35psi depending on your riding style.
  15. well, there was that hole that swallowed people whole... that was pretty interesting... What was the report writing decision on that btw?
  16. There's a certain young lady that is very chuffed with her performance last night I don't even want to know how much more chuffedness will be expressed if she had to find out that the avg speed was higher than the week before! I can barely get her to train as things are now. If she thinks that she's fit enough by default I'll never get her to train!
  17. Hehehe, true, BUT if we use last week as an example, I don't think it'll necessarily be a pleasant experience AIRMAVRICK have a look at something like the LED Lenser H7 Head Lamp for R375. Beware the temptation to go for something that says "6 super bright LEDs lasts for 10 days" and that costs R150. Those ones are meant for you to see what's in your plate when you're out camping. Not so much for riding lekker single track in the pitch dark. I've also seen the Hardcase Professional Headlight at Builders Warehouse and I remember thinking that those should be good for night rides. Watch out for a lumen(lm) rating on the packaging, I would say anything over 50lm will make for a survivable ride. I'll bring an extra light tonight, so if you're not sure about your lighting you're more than welcome to borrow my extra one. Come join us tonight and see how it goes. If you reckon you need more light, chat to Clinton the cow about hooking you up with some serious lumens
  18. My GF and I also hit Groenkloof on Sunday and after the ride I also noticed the brand new FOX on my Anthem and especially the Suntour on her bike was dirtier than normal... They looked a lot like the the fork in the picture. 3 dirty forks, same time period, same venue and at least 2 different riding styles... Might there be something more to it? Maybe that new big snake they released in the grass there has something to do with it
  19. How cool would it be if we had some of these locally? Stealth bikes
  20. A roadie toppie wearing a cap passed me on Saturday as I was exiting Groenkloof on my MTB. Because of his rather comical "shooter" howzit as he went past, I thought I'd let the fact that his head is unprotected go. So while I'm slowly reeling him in as we're going up Botha, the thoughts of him really not being a good example turned through my thoughts. But I let it go. Then we get to the first set of traffic lights... Guess what... He skips them. The greater car driving public thinks all cyclists are a menace because we don't adhere to the basic rules of the road and we have no sense of self preservation. I try and do my bit by trying to be a good example. Then okes like this come along and undo all the good some of us try to uphold.
  21. Hey Andre, seems your Old cassette will find it's way back to you I'm starting in E as well. Up from Q last year.
  22. Mild2Wild scheduled for tonight We're aiming for a nice 35km. But I suspect we'll probably end up doing...... 28.67km My bike is ready, so I just need to load it and go. I can be there at 18h00. Who else is keen?
  23. Hey Hey! It's Thursday  Are your batteries charged boys and girls!? BTW, any news on "the girl that took a tumble"?
  24. I use these ones from DealExtreme DealExtreme's prices are more than reasonable, but shipping times are a lucky packet draw. Anything between 2 weeks and 2 months can be expected. Here's a link that can be extremely helpful when deciding on which ones to go for LiIon Comparisons Just a tiny lil note: The above is relevant to Lithium Ion batteries in 18650 format. I haven't seen Lithium Polymer batteries in 18650 format yet... Yeah, a XPG R5 driven at +- 1A with an elliptical lens makes a nice soft spread of light. Perfect for when the group just cruises around sedately. The same LED with a 5 degree lens will have some serious throw. I just had a look and I'm using the LXP RealSpot 5.5 degree lenses. They have some usable spill as well. Do you have links to those drivers? I'd like to have a look at them. I've spent a lot of time on the hunt for the perfect driver. Also thought I'd just make my own. In the end hurdles like electrical noise (yes, they can throw you heart rate monitor way off), efficiency and thermal management made me decide that I'm just going to use something like this next time around. The reason I prefer XPGs to the new XMLs is that if you are going to draw 2.5A from your battery pack, multiple XPGs allows you to shape your light. Where as a single XML driven at 2.5A will be stupidly bright yes, but you'll be stuck with only throw, or only medium... Looking forward to seeing your efforts Stewie
  25. Eish, my seat won't ever smell the same if I had to come across this bad boy... Let's just hope he never confuses a little human kid for a mid morning snack.
